Loom Knitting Tools

Loom Knitting is the art of knitting and using a tool instead of knitting needles to assist. There are a variety of looms on the market and selecting the right looms for the application is the decision you need to make for yourself.

There are companies that specialize in loom making only and the quality difference. For example, Looms by KB tend to be much better in quality in manufacturing and attention to the peg sizing. The ones pictured above are generics which are fine for though just dabbling in the hobby. But for serious loomers, you may want to consider the brand and quality. For me personally, the generic ones are fine.

Generally speaking, the rectangular looms aka flat looms can also do things like hats. Instead of working across the loom, you can circle the rectangular one.

Round Looms

Loom Knitting Round Looms

Room Looms can come individually or as a kit. In the kit shown here, the peg distances between them vary depending on the size. As a new loomer, you may think the loom diameters as being too big for the projects. I made that mistake when I started.

  • Smallest Loom is for things like Christmas Stockings for even sock slippers. You can also do preemie size baby hats.
  • Purple (next size up) is regular baby size hats.
  • There is no size of general child-size in this kit.
  • Orange (next size up) is adult size hats.
  • Pink (largest size) could be for bags.

You can use the looms for flat panel knitting by not circling the entire loom.

Rectangular / Flat Looms

Loom Knitting Rectangular : Flat Looms

Rectangular or Flat Looms are for doing three possible concepts. You can make scarves that are knitted on both sides of the scarf. You can use the loom as a circle for things like hats or things you want to knit a tube with. You can also do flat panels around the loom but not joining to form a circle and go back and forth.

I would think about your projects you want to do. Scarves, definitely the way to go. If you are more interested in hats, I would get the round looms. If you want both, I would get at least the right circumference of round loom and a flat loom.

These make for great creative gifts for child and adults alike.

Sock Looms

Loom Knitting Sock Loom

Sock looms allow someone uncomfortable with knitting needles to still make socks.

The pegs are closer together and the pegs are much more thinner. They can handle the smaller thickness sock yarns that are required to make socks.

Most sock looms, if not all that I have seen, are adjustable. You will notice this loom has letters moulded into the face of the loom. You can slide one side in and out. This means you can make different diameter socks by setting the loom in advance. The numbers on the loom help you get the right information and there are usually instructions with the loom.

Yarn Pick Tool

Yarn Pick Tool

The yarn pick tool that is provided with the kits is cheap. I mean, CHEAP! I have found that the tool provided tends to break pretty easily. The metal is inserted into the rubberized grip. Through experience, the metal pick becomes separated from the rubber and free spins inside the tool. It’s impossible to knit with once it breaks.

At Michaels, they took me over the Cricut section. They have this tool called the Weeder. It’s essentially a heavy-duty pick. It’s bigger for my larger hands and is thicker to grab onto. It’s about $13 CDN for this tool. Worth the money if you ask me.

How To: Knit with a serenity loom

This video demonstrates how to knit with a serenity loom. A serenity loom can produce a blanket up to 10 feet. To start, thread a double loop of thread through a straw. Then use the loop of thread to pull through a piece of yarn. The straw will help you place the yarn around the pegs of the loom easier. Tie a loop around the anchor of the inside of the loom. Then loop completely around each peg, being sure to place the loops in the middle of the pegs consistantly. Wrap as far as you want your project to go, along the inside pegs first. Then reverse your wraps so you have two complete loops on each peg. Take your hook and pull the bottom loop over the top loop and off each peg. The grooves in the pegs will help with this process. Bring your new line of loops down to the middle of the peg. Now you have started to knit with a serenity loom.

Best Knitting Looms Buying Guide

If you are not already an experienced knitter, buying knitting looms can be quite confusing. However, if you know the features you should look for in a knitting loom, you can get the right one for your projects.

These are the features you should look for when buying a single knitting loom or an entire set, to get the best product.

  1. Shape

With knitting looms, you get options to choose from a number of shapes: “S” shaped, circular shaped and rectangular-shaped knitting looms. Although circular or round-shaped knitting looms are the most popular choices, the other two shapes can also be helpful in knitting.

The Authentic Afghan Knitting Loom is, for example, a “S-shaped” knitting loom and the LAYOER Long Knitting Loom Set is a rectangular-shaped knitting loom.

On the other hand, the ALIMELT Round Knitting Loom Set is a set of 6 knitting looms, where 5 of the looms are circular and one is rectangular.

However, it is possible to knit the same kinds of clothes and accessories with these round, rectangular or S-shaped looms. Most of the knitting looms that you’ll find available on the market happen to be round as they are most popular, but the other shapes can also be easy to use.

  1. Number of Looms

Apart from a few brands, most knitting looms come in a set, ideally a set of several knitting looms in different sizes. From a small 3.5” diameter knitting loom to a 15.5” diameter one, the more looms you get in a set, the better. Ideally, a set of knitting looms comes with 3 to 5 separate knitting looms.

The Darice Carryi Round Knitting Looms is a set of 4 circular knitting looms, and the Novelinks Round Knitting Looms Sets is also a set of 5 round-shaped knitting looms.

  1. Added Accessories

With most sets, you’ll not just be getting the knitting looms, but additional accessories and tools that can help you knit. For example, with the ALIMELT Round Knitting Loom Set, you get a total of 12 accessories and tools apart from the knitting looms themselves.

This includes 4 pieces of plastic hooks, 1 5-mm oxide hook made of aluminum, 1 plastic yarn wrapping tool, 1 piece of Afghan crochet hook, 1 bag of stitch markers and even an extra bag of pink pegs. With most other sets, you can at least get a crochet hook and a yarn needle to help your knitting.

At the same time, with the Readaeer Round Knitting Looms Set, you get 4 separate pompoms makers with the knitting looms. These pompom makers can be used to make colorful pompoms very easily and very fast.

  1. Removable Pegs

Although this is not a feature that you can find in most knitting looms, the ones where you can remove the pegs are quite helpful.

If the pegs can be removed and then reattached, it means that you can use the same knitting looms for wider gauges. If you are using bulky or thick yarn, it is important that you get a knitting loom with removable pegs.

  1. Other Features

Other important features include:

  • The material the knitting looms are made of
  • The size of the different knitting looms in a set
  • The softness or the flexibility of the looms
  • Ease of handling and use
  • Helpful instruction guide,
  • Carrying case,
  • Number of pegs in each loom

Apart from a few special ones, most knitting looms come with similar features. The right one for you depends on the one you are most comfortable with, as well as the set that is within your budget.

Types of knitting looms

Whenever we hear the word “loom”, we are generally reminded of a large contraption used for knitting or weaving fabrics.

However, knitting looms are smaller and more personal tools, manufactured for holding in your hand for using. Most of them are lightweight and extremely easy to use; after a while, the user almost forgets holding the tool in their hand.

There are actually quite a few different types of knitting looms that both professionals and beginners use for knitting, although we’ve discussed the more common ones in this article. The different types of knitting looms are:

1. Rake Looms

Rake looms are completely different from the knitting looms discussed here. These looms are also known as long looms, as they are quite lengthy in size. These are not looms that you can hold in your hand to use because they are quite heavy, being made from wood. These rake looms are more suitable for knitting large blankets and full-sized shawls.

A rake loom is a long, singular row of pegs. Two or more rake knitting looms can be set beside each other and connected together to create a bigger tool. Sometimes, rake looms with two rows are available in the market for knitting shawls and blankets, or oversized sweaters.

2. Circular/Round Looms

Most of the looms discussed in this article belong to this group. Circular rooms are lightweight and easy to use, mostly made from plastic or lightweight wood. These looms let you knit continuously, and with the larger ones, you can actually knit large shawls and blankets by yourself.

Although it is possible to knit properly using looms of different shapes – rectangle, heart, oval or square – the circular ones are more preferable for knitting socks and hats.

3. Afghan Looms

Afhan looms are unique as they are mostly “S” shaped; these knitting looms are also known as “S-looms” or “Serenity looms”. Whether they are a S-shaped loom or an infinity-shaped loom with a S-shape in the middle, Afghan looms are perfect for knitting blankets, shawls and Afghans.

4. Sock Looms

As the name suggests, sock looms are used to make socks, both for adults or babies. These looms can be easily adjusted so that you can use the same loom for making socks for the entire family. They come with adjustable gauges that you can increase and decrease, for making socks of all shapes and sizes.

5. Weaving Looms

Weaving looms are completely different from regular knitting looms. These knitting looms don’t come with pegs, but with a series of warped threads. These threads work as a framework for weaving with your yarn.

Of all these types of knitting looms, the Afghan loom and the circular-shaped looms are the most popular ones. These are the ones people use the most in their projects, both professionals and beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are Knitting Looms faster?

A. Knitting looms are definitely faster than using just yarn needles or crochet hooks to knit. Also because this is an easier technique to learn, even a beginner can become an expert knitter within a very short time.

Q. What can you make with a knitting loom?

A. Anything you can make with knitting needles or crochet hooks can be made faster with a knitting loom. Since knitting looms come in different shapes and sizes, the right one can be used to make anything from baby socks to full-sized blankets.

The smaller knitting looms are used for making socks and hats, but the larger ones can be used for making shawls, blankets and scarves.

Q. Why is my loom knitting so tight?

A. If your gauges seem tighter than normal, it may be because of the placement of your pegs. If the pegs are too close to each other, the gauges will be tighter. It will feel like your knitting is tighter than you want.

Some knitting looms come with removable pegs; this means that you can remove some pegs for a less tighter gauge, or if you are using a bulky yarn.

Q. Is loom knitting easy?

A. Loom knitting can be considered to be easy since it makes it impossible to drop stitches. Even a beginner can use a knitting loom to knit a whole shawl or blanket without dropping a single stitch.

Besides, the stitches won’t even slide off the needle when you are trying to transfer the stitches from one needle to another.

Q. Can you make a blanket with a loom?

A. The larger knitting looms can be used for making larger accessories like blankets and full-sized shawls. The shape of the knitting loom doesn’t matter in this context; you can use a round, a rectangular or a “S-shaped” loom for making a blanket, but it needs to be a large one.

Conclusion

Knitting looms aren’t very common for the rest of the world, but for knitters, they are the best tools for making everything from baby booties to hats and scarves, as well as blankets and shawls.

Knitting looms are the ideal solution for people who prefer to travel with their knitting, or want to be a fast knitter; besides, knitting looms are almost fail-safe tools for both beginners and experts.

Pom pom blanket diagonal baby blanket

Introduction: Loom Knit Blanket

This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a nice blanket for a loved one

Step 1: Gathering Your Materials

What You'll Need: A rectangular loom Yarn color(or colors) of your choice Yarn needle Sewing needle Scissors

Step 2: Preparing Your Loom

Next you need to pick a side to start on your loom even though it really doesn't matter which. Now take your yarn. If your yarn is thick you could use 1 strand of yarn. If not, find the point where your yarn will come out of. There should be 2. One at one end of your yarn and another already pulled out.

Step 3: Slip Knot

The first thing we need to do is to make a slip not. There are many ways to do this. Method 1:wrap the yarn around your index finger twice leaving the loose strand pointing toward the ground and at the end of your finger. Now pull the leftmost strand over the one on the right. Next take the string that was originally on the right and pull it back over the string that is now on the right. Now hold the loose strand pull up on the only strand left on your finger. Now you have a slip knot! Method 2:make a loop in the yarn(don't tie it). Next insert the loose strand of yarn into the loop. Now catch it between your index finger and your thumb. Now pull on your working yarn(strand connected to the rest of your yarn).

Step 4: Starting Off

Place the slip knot on the first peg to the right on the side nearest to you. Next, take the working yarn and bring it behind peg 2 and back in front. You are basically making a loop around the pegs. Now do the same around the entire loom. When you come to the end of one side bring your yarn straight across to the other side. Continue to loop. When you get to the end, go straight across to the first side you began on and continue to loop. When you are finished, you should have a bottom and a top row of loops on each peg. Tie a slip not onto the peg sticking out of the loom.

Step 5: Knitting on the Loom

Now you will need your knitting hook. Use it to pull the bottom strand/loop on the peg over the first one. Once again start on the rightmost peg on the side closest to you or the side opposite of the last peg you wrapped. Continue to lift the bottom most strand over the topmost until you get to the end of your loom. You have now done one row.

Step 6: Making the Blanket

Continue to lift the bottom peg over the first one all around the loom. After every time around the loom and only one strand is left, you need to wrap around each peg so that there are 2 strands per peg all around the loom. Continue this method of wrapping the knitting.

Step 7: Your Blanket Pattern

To make this blanket your own, you must choose how to put it together. I chose to create a pattern. To make a square you need to do 30 rows of knitting(wrapping the pegs is not a row). Then I sewed 5 of them in a straight line. Then I did long rectangular rows. For these do only 140 rows instead of 150 to get them all even. Sew these long ways to the 5 squares to create a pattern. Alternate between rectangle and 5 squares. Or you could do all rectangular panels or you can use squares to piece it together for a quilt like look. You can make your blanket as long and wide as you like it's completely up to you!

Step 8: Enjoy!

This blanket pattern can be used in multiple ways. Whether you are traveling or giving a baby doll and a toddler a source of comfort, this blanket is very useful. One plus is that since we used a rectangle loom with 2 sides, this blanket is twice as thick as a normal one! Enjoy everyone and comment. This is my first instructable, so I hope you all enjoy it!

Easy Loom Knit Ten Stitch Blanket Pattern & Video Tutorial

Hey, loom knitters, I’ve got big news for you today!  Well, it’s bigger than big.  Huge!  Monumental!  There’s a new loom knit Ten Stitch Blanket pattern in town and it’s better than ever.

The ten stitch blanket changed the world of loom knitting because it can be done on any loom in any gauge with any yarn!  All you need is a loom with 10 pegs and yarn.  Frankie Brown took the knitting world by storm when she pblished her needle knit Ten Stitch Blanket 10 years ago.  Since that time the pattern was converted to the loom, but sadly, it is no longer available.

Ten Stitch Samples with different yarn and Purple Knifty Knitter Loom

I decided now is the time to bring it back!  I got permission from Frankie to convert the pattern from needle to loom.   You may not know it, but Frankie has over 400 patterns available for free on Ravelry.  Her patterns are free, but she welcomes donations to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, a cause near and dear to her heart.  You can show her your appreciation by getting more details on Frankie’s Ravelry page.

Rather than work from someone else’s conversion I decided to start over with original pattern.  My assistant, Joann Gay, and I worked to make the directions easier to understand and smoother to knit on a loom. This is NOT the same ten stitch pattern you’ve used before.  Seriously, you’re going to love it!

What’s new?

  • THE CORNERS – We rewrote the instructions for the corners to make them easier to follow.  Also,  you have the option of working corners two ways: wrapping the peg or German short rows.  See which one you like best!
  • THE JOIN – You know that thick ridge as you join your edges?  It’s now smoother and flatter.  You also don’t have an extra (11th) peg to deal with.  We think a loom knit ten stitch blanket should use 10 pegs!
  • THE CALCULATOR – We’ve got a Ten Stitch Calculator to help you figure out how big your blanket will end up.  It can also tell you how many rounds to knit to reach the size you want.
  • THE CHART – I’ve also designed a new downloadable chart for you plan your blanket.  But more about that later…
  • THE PDF DOWNLOAD – The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF so you can load it onto your phone or tablet and have it available anywhere you go.
  • THE VIDEOS – I’ve filmed a video showing the new techniques just for you.  I know videos can be hard for left-handed loomers to follow so I have a special video just for you lefties to watch!

Ten Stitch Design

The Ten Stitch Blanket can be so much more than a way to use up yarn.  You could use a contrast color for the corners, make each side a different color, make each round a different color and much more.  Let your creativity go wild!  Use the following diagram to plan your ten stitch blanket and track your progress:

Square Blanket: Each round you will knit 4 corners and 4 sides.  The small red lines indicate where you finish each round.

Rectangle Blanket: As with the Square, you will knit 4 corners and 4 sides on each round EXCEPT the last round.  You will finish the last round after the 3rd side. Do NOT knit the last corner and side!
