If privacy is a concern for you, the HP Envy 13 includes a physical shutter that turns off the webcam when it's not in use. (That means you can save your masking tape for home projects instead.) It also has a fingerprint reader so you log in with the push of a button.

Rich Bang & Olufsen audio, WiFi 6 connectivity, and 13-hour battery life round off the specs. All told, the HP Envy 13 deserves its top spot on the list of best Walmart laptops - especially for remote work, online schooling, and multimedia streaming.

02. Microsoft Surface Laptop 3

The best Walmart laptop for designers on the move

Specifications

CPU: Intel Core i5 - i7

Graphics: Iris Plus Graphics 950

RAM: 8GB - 16GB

Screen: 13.5-inch PixelSense (2,256 x 1,504)

Storage: 128GB - 1TB

Reasons to buy

+Premium build+Ultra-portable+USB-C included

Reasons to avoid

-No Thunderbolt 3

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is perfect for creatives on the go. As we noted in our review, it may not be as much of a workhorse as the Surface Book 2 but it still packs an impressive punch for its diminutive size and among the best Walmart laptops on offer right now.

This lightweight laptop has a premium look and feel, boasting a beautiful 13.5-inch,  PixelSense display that makes it a brilliant system for creative purposes. Unlike its predecessors, the Surface Laptop 3 has a USB-C port; however, it lacks Thunderbolt 3 support.

The Surface Laptop 3 is among the best ultraportable laptops out there right now. It's a great choice for creatives who are seeking a less expensive alternative to the MacBook Air and/or prefer the Windows ecosystem.

03. Lenovo IdeaPad 3

The best Walmart budget laptop with Windows

Specifications

CPU: Intel Core i3

Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD

RAM: 4GB

Screen: 15.6-inch HD (1,366 x 768)

Storage: 128GB

Reasons to buy

+Easy setup+Great value+Google Classroom compatible

Reasons to avoid

-Battery life is middling

The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is an excellent value buy if you need a computer for basic needs but aren't keen on a Chromebook. In particular, it'll suit younger students who are doing virtual or hybrid school. (It's Google Classroom compatible.)

For a very reasonable price, you'll get a 10th generation Intel i3 dual-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch HD display. Again, the aim of the IdeaPad 3 is to provide the right amount of power for assignments and web browsing - just what you need in a budget laptop. Battery life maxes out at 7.5 hours so it'll just get you through the day.

Note that this laptop comes with Windows 10 S. As a security-focused OS, it only allows Microsoft-approved apps to be installed. That may be a hindrance for some, but the OS can be disabled if need be.

04. MacBook Pro (M1, 2020)

The best MacBook on sale at Walmart

Specifications

CPU: Apple M1 (8-core CPU)

Graphics: Apple M1 (8-core GPU)

RAM: 8GB – 16GB

Screen: 13.3-inch Retina (2,560 x 1,600) IPS

Storage: 256GB – 2TB

Reasons to buy

+Quiet operation+Gorgeous screen+Excellent battery life

Reasons to avoid

-Lacking ports

The latest-generation MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) is the first of Apple's pro-level laptops to come with the company's proprietary M1 chipset. As we found in our review, this translates to an impressive performance for even the most arduous of tasks, like editing 8K video.

At surface level, the MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) doesn't look all that different than its previous iterations, but that's not a bad thing. The 13-inch Retina display remains unchanged, with its True Tone ambient light sensor and P3 wide color gamut support - features creatives will especially appreciate.

With a familiar appearance and souped-up specs under the hood, the MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) is the best Walmart MacBook you can get right now - and one of the best Walmart laptops available in general.

05. ASUS ROG G512 Strix

The best gaming laptop on sale at Walmart

Specifications

CPU: Intel Core i7

Graphics: : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070

RAM: 16GB

Screen: 15.6-inch, FHD (1,920 x 1,080)

Storage: 512GB

Reasons to buy

+Excellent graphics+Strong performance+Responsive keyboard

Reasons to avoid

-Weak battery

The ASUS ROG G512 Strix laptop is proof that you don't have to totally break the bank to pick up a solid gaming system. Boasting a 10th-gen Intel Core i7-10750H 6-core CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB graphics, you won't have to worry about your favourite games falling victim to lagging and poor FPS rates.

Other standout features of this gaming laptop include Intel Wi-Fi 6, Thunderbolt 3, and a customizable keyboard that is also quite responsive. Curiously, a webcam is not included, something to think about if you're thinking of starting a Twitch channel.

Battery life maxes out at six hours, which means you'll have to keep your power plug handy for long-haul gaming sessions. However, the flip side of that is excellent performance and super-smooth gameplay.

06. Acer Spin 3

The best budget 2-in-1 laptop at Walmart

Specifications

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3

Graphics: AMD Radeon Graphics

RAM: 4GB

Screen: 14-inch HD (1,366 x 768) touchscreen

Storage: 128GB

Reasons to buy

+Affordable Windows system+Decent screen quality +Thin and lightweight

Reasons to avoid

-No stylus included

If you're on the lookout for the best Walmart laptop that also doubles as a tablet and is affordable, then opt for the Acer Spin 3. It's not the most powerful laptop in the world, but it does the job very well considering its price.

This particular model comes with an AMD Ryzen 3250U dual-core CPU, 128GB SSD, and multiple ports including USB-C and HDMI. With a 12-hour battery life, the Acer Spin 3 can get you through a day's worth of work and then some.

One caveat: no stylus is included with this model. However, with the money you save on this budget 2-in-1 laptop, you can buy a stylus you'll enjoy using.

07. Lenovo Chromebook 3

The best Chromebook laptop at Walmart

Specifications

CPU: Intel Celeron

Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 600

RAM: 4GB

Screen: 11.6-inch HD (1,366 x 768)

Storage: 32GB

Reasons to buy

+All-day battery+Plenty of ports+Very affordable

Reasons to avoid

-Screen is lacklustre

If you want the best Chromebook laptop Walmart sells, then we have to call out the Lenovo Chromebook 3. For a super low price, you'll get a lightweight system that performs very well punctuated by 10-hour battery life.

Specs include an Intel Celeron N4020 dual-core CPU, four USB ports (including two USB-C), a 720p front-facing webcam, and a microSD card slot should you need to expand upon the onboard 32GB storage. The 11.6-inch 1,366 x 768 screen may underwhelm compared to similar models, but it'll hardly take away from your experience if you merely need a reliable system for work or school.

The Lenovo Chromebook 3 is a lot more affordable than a Windows or Mac laptop while still performing very well. We believe it's the best Walmart Chromebook laptop you can pick up right now, especially if you're on a limited budget.

What are good laptop specs?

If you work or play in the creative industry – in graphic design, video editing, photography, or digital art – there are certain specs to look for -whether you're perusing the best Walmart laptops or otherwise. You'll need the very best panels and a high colour accuracy for your screen. 1080p is the minimum resolution you should consider, but a 4K monitor is preferable.

You'll also need plenty of power because creative software such as Adobe's Creative Cloud suite can be fairly resource-intensive. As far as minimum specifications go, we recommend a dual-core, 64-bit processor (or, if your budget can stretch to it, a quad-core processor). To perform complex creative tasks, RAM should be no less than 4GB, and ideally 8GB or 16GB.

For most day-to-day tasks, you won't need to buy a Walmart laptop with a discrete graphics card but for graphics-intensive creative work, you’ll need one. An MX150 graphics card will give you some decent graphics performance without costing a fortune. For more demanding graphic work, look into Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, 1060 and 1070 graphics. If you want very powerful graphics and play a lot of games as well, then an Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card is worth considering – but it will be expensive.

Finally, for storage space, don't go any lower than 128GB because you’ll need enough to install an OS like Windows 10, and to store your files and apps.

The best Walmart laptops span a wide range of use cases, from online schooling and virtual work, to light browsing and media streaming. Plus, some of our top choices on this list are also capable of serving creatives quite well.

The Gateway devices at Walmart will include laptops, 2-in-1s, and an Ultra Slim and Creators series with both AMD and Intel processors.

Also: Gateway is back at Walmart: Here are the best laptop deals

Acer bought Gateway in 2007 for $710 million in a move to acquire market share. The Gateway brand, which used to go toe-to-toe with the likes of HP and Dell, faded away. Acer still owns the Gateway brand and forged the Walmart deal as Jade Zhou, head of global strategic alliances for Acer, noted the brand's history and how its cow-spotted boxes "have been well-loved in the United States since 1985."

What remains to be seen is whether the Gateway nostalgia play bolsters Acer's market share vs. the likes of HP, Lenovo, and Dell.

The lineup includes:

  • 11.6-inch Ultra Slim Laptop (MSRP: $199.99) featuring Windows 10, AMD A4, 4GB/64GB. Available in four colors: Black, purple, blue, and green.

Walmart Computer Review - April 2019 Deals

Walmart is selling Gateway PCs and no, the year is not 1999

To borrow the opening from The Outer Limits, there is nothing wrong with your display, do not attempt to adjust the picture. Yes, there are actually new Gateway PCs on the market, wrapped in cow-spotted packaging like the old days (as in, two decades ago). And they are only available at Walmart.

Some of you reading this might not remember Gateway, serving as a sobering reminder that I'm getting old. Gateway predates The Simpsons by several years, coming into existence in 1985 and maintaining a significant presence in the PC market through the 1990s, and early 2000s. Then the hard times hit, and in 2007 Acer snatched up Gateway for $710 million.

The Gateway brand never entirely disappeared, but its presence was certainly diminished, and I imagine largely forgotten by many. Be that as it may, Acer is looking to leverage the brand with a new lineup of laptops, 2-in-1 systems, and even a couple of tablets.

"The Gateway PC brand and its renowned cow-spotted boxes have been well-loved in the United States since 1985," said Jade Zhou, head of global strategic alliances for Acer. "Acer is thrilled that Walmart is becoming the exclusive provider of Gateway-branded notebooks and tablets. We are pleased that customers in the United States and Puerto Rico will have the opportunity to enjoy the beloved Gateway brand again through one of the world's top retailers."

According to the press release, the new Gateway PCs range in price from $200 to $1,200. However, Walmart seems to be selling some of the higher end models for a bit below MSRP. For example, the top SKU (and also the most compelling) is a $999 laptop config powered by an Intel Core i5 10300H Comet Lake processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It also has a 15.6-inch display with a 1920x1080 resolution and a respectable 120Hz refresh rate.

Not bad for a grand, though the RAM and storage allotments are a bit anemic. It is one of two performance oriented Creator Series laptops. The other is another 15.6-inch config, but with an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor and GeForce GTX 1650 GPU (other specs are the same). It has an MSRP of $900 but is listed for $799.

For what it's worth, the small number of user reviews on both model are positive, though who knows if they are legit. I'm also curious about the upgrade potential of either of these machines—both models look good for the money, but as RAM and SSD prices continue to fall, I'd be interested in bumping both up on my own.

The other Gateway models consist of a bunch of 14.1-inch ultra slim models, a single 15.6-inch ultra slim laptop, an 11.6-inch 2-in-1 system, and a pair of Android tablets (8-inch and 10.1-inch for $70 and $80, respectively).

You can browse the collection right now on Walmart.

Paul has been playing PC games and raking his knuckles on computer hardware since the Commodore 64. He does not have any tattoos, but thinks it would be cool to get one that reads LOAD"*",8,1. In his off time, he rides motorcycles and wrestles alligators (only one of those is true).
