Why TikTok music marketers are turning to hydraulic press videos and DIY slime posts to promote songs
- Music marketers often hire creators to make dances or memes that help a song trend on TikTok.
- But not all TikTok music campaigns feature influencers.
- Record labels also regularly pay general-interest accounts to put songs in the background of videos.
On September 3, the TikTok account "Hydraulic Press Channel" uploaded a video showing a stack of money being crushed into oblivion.
The account, which calls itself the "CEO of crushing," has built a following of over 11 million fans by posting videos of a 150-ton hydraulic press smushing bowling balls, candles, and other household items.
In the background of the September video, you can hear the song "Loretta" by Ginger Root playing beneath the hum of the machine as it squishes the piles of coins and Venezuelan bolívares.
"Loretta" wasn't a random song choice: Ginger Root's label Acrophase Records hired the music-marketing agency Songfluencer to get the track featured in the video. While the artist Ginger Root also created a separate post to promote the song, it was the hydraulic press video and a related duet that ended up garnering the most engagement on TikTok, with a combined 37 million views and 2.2 million "likes."
"Using these accounts like the hydraulic press accounts are helpful with giving the song a chance to sort of work outwards first, and just kind of get in front of people and make the algorithm aware of it," Acrophase Records' founder Dan Asip told Insider. And having a solid number of user-generated videos and views on TikTok can help an artist or label pitch a song for playlists on platforms like Spotify, he added.
Music marketers often hire popular influencers to promote a track on TikTok, either by encouraging a dance challenge or a meme that they hope gains traction on the app. But record labels also regularly work with media accounts that post videos that don't feature an influencer at all, according to half a dozen sources who have worked on song campaigns on TikTok. Working with an account that uploads close-up shots of slime or coffee being poured into a glass of ice can be an equally effective way to drive interest in a song, they said.
These general-interest accounts offer visually satisfying clips of items being crushed, cleaned, or assembled that can garner millions of views.
"Oftentimes if you go to the 'For You' timeline, you'll see cooking recipes or skateboard videos or tattoo fails," said Ben Hiott, cofounder at the marketing agency Get Engaged. "It's not always just a creator doing a dance or doing a skit."
Adding a song to the background of a video rather than putting it front and center can be a particularly effective strategy for certain music genres like electronic music, said one marketer at a record label who asked not to be named because they didn't have permission to discuss internal strategy.
"Using our music for the soundtrack for content that is super engaging visually is a really good method that I like to typically lean into because you're subconsciously getting your music played on millions of millions of videos," they said.
Get Engaged's team said it works on marketing campaigns with a variety of accounts that don't feature creators' faces, from a user that makes TikTok videos of smoothies being blended to a creator who deep cleans rugs.
"From a reach perspective, non-creator profiles are fantastic," Hiott said, adding that the down side is losing the human connection with the creator. "A lot of times it's the type of content people can't stop watching."

The Globe and Mail caught up with Hunter to find out what’s in store for your child’s favourite distraction, this pandemic year and beyond.
What are your kids watching?
I have two sons, 7 and 4. They watch anything and everything. They watch not just YouTube; they watch all the other platforms. But they really, really loved Pinkfong Wonderstar. We had that on repeat for a long time.

You started out with Disney, worked with Nickelodeon, BBC and Sony before joining YouTube Originals. What changes have you seen in the industry?
A massive shift was last year because of the beginning of the pandemic. And it put kids’ content more at the focus. Over all those months when parents have had to be tutors to their children and having to keep kids entertained – kids’ content has kind of been a saviour for a lot of those parents, and kids actually. So I feel like I’m part of something.
But as parents, you’re always being told to limit your kids screen time. How does that figure into programming?
Everyone is watching more, not just kids. But for us, we’ve also seen a shift in increased co-viewing. That’s a good thing, you know, bringing families together to watch. I suppose it all comes down to what [children] get from it. And that’s where I’ve come in to do these [YouTube] Originals with a very specific framework. To be able to provide, for want of a better word, nutritional content, and so guilt-free.
What about those annoying videos? Like Baby Shark. It drives parents up the wall ...
Kids’ content is no different from any other content. It comes down to personal taste. The difference with preschool content is that the parents are the gatekeepers. It’s them you have to snag rather than older, tech-savvy kids. With preschoolers, it’s almost the same as with TV. The parents have the remote.
The thing with YouTube is the algorithms, though. Younger and younger kids understand that they can swipe for more videos. There’s a lot of questionable content on YouTube. Isn’t there a concern about what kids can swipe to next?

With the YouTube Kids app, there’s a wall. It’s a safe space. And not to go too far out of my remit – because my arena is very much on the creative side of YouTube Originals, which so far isn’t the majority of the content on the app. The content on the app has been carefully curated for the audience. Within YouTube Kids, when you first download it, you get to set different parameters, like how old your kid is. And based on all these little things you put in, it will collate a lot of data. It will be able to work out what to serve back. And like you said, with the algorithm, the more things the parent or child clicks and watches, it then helps serve you more of that type of stuff.
The videos that are truly popular are those toy-unboxing videos. How do you compete with that?
What I think you need to remember is that [YouTube] is fundamentally an open platform and for user-generated content. There’s a space and place for that content. But there’s also a space and place for this stuff that I’m here to do, as well. It’s very much about trying to diversify the types of content. What we wouldn’t want to do would be to just replicate. Chances are you probably want your kid to have more nutritional things to watch as a YouTube Original than just a slime video, you know.
What sort of projects are you excited to work on?
There are untapped voices everywhere. I think if you have more diverse voices, it leads to richer content. Eventually what we want to do is build around our framework of four pillars: Pursuing your dreams and goals; self-care and well-being; in your community; culture and diversity. We’re not looking to develop shows that encompass every single one of those four pillars because we’ll end up with a Frankenstein show. But we need to make sure we’ve acknowledged at least one of those one of those things in everything that we make.
Platforms such as TikTok give out alerts that tell you when you’ve been watching more than 15 minutes of content. Is this also something you’re thinking about?

It would be crazy if we were to ignore what is happening around us. There are loads of different social media platforms. I think all of this – not from a YouTube standpoint, or a Google standpoint – is just to be a decent human being, to do the right thing. So yeah, in answer to your question, it is important to us. We are actively looking at projects, as we speak, that cover things like meditation and well-being, and having time out to do different things. That’s as important as anything else.

Slime Videos Drove 25 Billion Views on YouTube Last Year
Some trends come and go on YouTube, while others continue to gather speed and generate insane views and engagement. Slime videos are just one of those trends that emerged a couple of years ago and continue to provide content for creators and entertainment for viewers.
In 2018, slime content generated 25.4B views on YouTube, an increase of 78% from 2016, which makes this a true power trend on the platform. According to Google, “slime” was the biggest DIY trend of 2017 – causing a national shortage of glue in the U.S. But 2018 saw just as much activity when it came to online video, with 1.7M uploads from 800K different YouTube channels. The average engagement rate for slime content was 1.5x, which was above the platform average. Of the 25.4B views, 24.9B were for influencers, 329M from media and entertainment channels, and 20.2M views were for official brand accounts.
Slime Content on YouTube: 2018 Insights
Using Tubular data, we can confirm how slime videos performed on YouTube, who were the top creators, and who was watching. But first, let’s kick off with a couple of surprising facts:
- Slime video content was a truly worldwide phenomenon in 2018. While English was the top language for 15.3B of YouTube views, views from uploads in Portuguese (2.1B), Spanish (2B), Turkish (1.3B), and Vietnamese (1B) highlight how creators across the globe tapped into the demand for this content in their native language.
- The slime video appeal isn’t just for children. The top two influencers of 2018 not only saw an equal split when it comes to male to female viewers, but the majority of their views came from those in the 25-34 age group!
- Using Tubular’s exclusive Performance Insights tool, we can confirm that for the average length of slime videos on YouTube, the vast majority of views are for content between 10-15 minutes. However, a staggering 1.5B views were generated by content that lasted over 20 minutes, and that content attracted twice the platform average engagement rate.
There were three main categories of creators for the top ‘slime’ content on YouTube last year: influencers, media and entertainment publishers, and brands. Let’s take a look at each!
Influencers on YouTube Leading the Slime Trend
Influencers generated the overwhelming majority of views for slime content in 2018, with the top two attracting 2.1B of those views alone. The most-watched influencer was Isabella Stress who generated 1.1B views on YouTube in 2018 with an average V30 (that’s views within 30 days of publishing) of 2.8M. Such is the appeal of her content, her videos attracted 251M million views in October 2018 and her channel flew up the Tubular YouTube chart by 412 places to give her a top #100 position. By November 2018, she was the #1 global influencer in Entertainment on YouTube. Her most-watched video last year generated an incredible 367M views:
Following close behind is Tom Slime (almost certainly not his real name) who generated 1B views on YouTube in 2018 with an average V30 of 1.1M. His top video for last year drew in 215M views!
Media Companies Jump on Slime Videos Train
While influencers generated an average of 117K per video in 2018, media companies attracted an average of 546K views per video. So while there are far fewer uploads from these types of creators, the content they publish is resonating with the viewer. The most-watched media company for slime content was Troom Troom who held five of the top ten most-watched slime creators last year.
In total, Troom Troom properties generated a combined view count of 196.9M YouTube views, with DisneyChannelUK and Nickelodeon also picking up significant views for their slime uploads. For media and entertainment companies, the majority of views were generated from content between 10-15 minutes.
Brands on YouTube Yet to Enjoy Benefits of Slime Content
Although only a small percentage of brands got into the slime content game in 2018, Barbie, Polly Pocket, GoldieBlox, and Num Noms all generated respectable views on YouTube for specific videos focused on slime. However, we can confirm that views around video duration varied compared to influencers and media publishers, with the average being much shorter:
Also, we noted that there was little activity around sponsored video although omnipresent Ryan ToysReview did partner with brands like Mattel to create 29 sponsored videos around slime in 2018. This particular sponsored video generated over 6.4M sponsored video views for the toy brand:
Only 140 sponsored videos around slime were created and published in 2018 — that’s a huge opportunity for brands to partner with publishers and influencers to reach a more targeted audience! It’s a global evergreen phenomenon and all types of creators still have the opportunity to generate significant views and engagements in 2019.
This 23-year-old went from waitressing to earning millions as YouTube's 'slime queen'
Karina Garcia is known as the internet's "slime queen" — and that's a big compliment.
In less than three years, the 23-year-old has turned her one-time hobby — posting DIY slime videos to YouTube — into a full-time career, and gone from waitressing to making millions.
For those who don't know, slime — the kind Garcia whips up — is no longer something you dig out of a clogged drain. It's a puffy, viscous, often pastel-colored craft that you can make at home using Elmer's glue, water, 20 Mule Team Borax and the instructions of one of the internet's growing cadre of YouTube slime stars.
Garcia's YouTube page has more than 200 videos, demonstrating everything from how to make a $1,000 slime smoothie, to edible snow slime, to slime balloons and even slime bubblegum. Her channel has more than seven million subscribers and her videos have collectively garnered more than 900 million views.
"I always knew what success was and I always wanted to be successful, but I've never dreamed of having this much success," she tells CNBC Make It.
Garcia grew up in California as one of six children. She describes herself as an "arts and crafts kid" who loved everything beauty-related. One day, after she'd created a lipstick using a mixture of old eye shadow, chapstick and clear lip gloss, her twin sister encouraged her to film the process and upload the video to YouTube.
She posted her first video, "Easy DIY Lipsticks!" in February 2015. After that, she started posting weekly videos on beauty-related crafts, like how to make makeup brush holders. She was browsing Pinterest for more crafting ideas when she came across a simple recipe for homemade slime.
"This was the most basic slime ever," she says. "I started throwing random stuff in it to make different textures."
In August 2015, she uploaded her first slime video, showing how to make squishy, slime-textured soap out of Herbal Essences shampoo, corn starch, cooking oil and soap dye she found on Amazon. After that, though she still posted the occasional beauty tutorials, her regular video uploads were mostly focused on variations of slime.
Producing the videos started as a hobby but grew into a side hustle for the California native. She was working as a waitress for her older brother, who was a wedding coordinator, but after growing a large enough following to bring in advertising money from her videos, she quit her job to focus on making slime, full-time.
Today, a search for "slime" on YouTube yields more than 20 million results, but at the time, content like Garcia's was rare, and she got in on the ground floor of the sticky business.
"My first check from YouTube was only like $50, but then it kept getting bigger," says Garcia. "The paycheck that was like super crazy to me was when I got a $10,000 check. That was when I felt like I made it."
Garcia received that check less than a year after uploading her first video.
YouTube declined to comment on Garcia's earnings, but Danny Fratella of Social Blade, a data company that tracks estimated earnings and future projections of YouTube stars, estimated that Garcia likely earns anywhere from $80,000 to $160,000 a month on ad revenue alone.
"She has over 960 million total views on her channel, which have likely paid out several million dollars in ad revenue over the life of her channel thus far," Fratella told CNBC Make It via email.
Garcia has also secured partnerships with brands like Coca-Cola, Audible and Maltesers, and completed a 14-city meet and greet tour last summer. In May of 2017 she published a book, "Karina Garcia DIY Slime," and in October she launched a product line, Craft City, which includes a make-your-own slime kit sold exclusively at Target.
She says that between ad revenue, partnerships, her book, product line, and events, her business earns about $2 million a year.
One of Garcia's most popular videos to date has more than 23 million views. In it, she demonstrates how to make a stress ball out of 100 pounds of slime. Its popularity is a testament to the internet's growing fascination with slime. More than six million Instagram posts bear the #slime hashtag, and on Google's 2017 top trends list, "How to make slime" was the task most searched.
Michael Polk, CEO of Newell Brands, the parent company of Elmer's, told CNBC's Jim Cramer the trend has had a discernible impact on the company's business as well, as kids race to follow YouTubers' instructions.
"Our brand managers identified the unbelievable trend with making slime, and one of the ingredients in slime, which is this ooey gooey creation, is Elmer's glue," said Polk.
Retail sales of Elmer's liquid glue rose 25 percent in 2016, and Polk told Cramer that from March to May of 2017, the Elmer's brand had received nearly 200,000 social media mentions about slime.
Garcia's not the only person driving — and cashing in on — the trend. Theresa Nguyen, another slime enthusiast, boasts a million followers on her Instagram account, @rad.slime, and sells her products in an online shop. She tells Vice that she makes about $300 to $400 each time she sells about 30-50 "slimes."
Florida teen Casey Duke runs a popular Etsy shop that sells scented slime products, like apple pie slime smoothie, tropical pie slime and fresh sheets slime. Her Instagram account, @fruityslimefactory, has more than 81,000 followers.
Unlike some of her peers, Garcia doesn't actually sell her slime creations, choosing to focus instead on ad revenue and partnerships. She's been so successful with the gooey substance that she is now the breadwinner in her family. Last April, she purchased a home in California where she now lives with four of her siblings and her parents.
"It's really important to take care of my family, because we grew up not having much," she says.
She credits her success to her loyal fans which include more than seven million YouTube subscribers, more than 770,000 Instagram followers and more than 37,000 Twitter followers.
"I always thought it would be cool to make slime a full-time job," she says, "but I feel like I have exceeded my expectations and never thought this was really possible."

YouTube is full of cringey, clickbait DIY channels. They’re even weirder than you think.
The best way to understand Troom Troom, the YouTube channel devoted to bizarre DIY tutorials, “hacks,” and “funny pranks,” is to spend multiple hours watching it until your brain turns into sprinkle-covered neon slime that can somehow also be used as lip gloss.
Because this is precisely the sort of thing that Troom Troom traffics in: do-it-yourself how-tos that no person could or should ever replicate. The most popular videos currently on the channel are tips on how to sneak food and makeup into class in laughably arduous ways: One suggests removing the glue from a glue stick and inserting a block of hard cheese into the container, while another recommends cutting an apple in half, using an Exact-O knife to remove the center, and then stuffing an eyeshadow palette inside. Of the apple!
Troom Troom is just one of many content factories of mysterious international origin that have gamed YouTube’s algorithm with bright, clickbait-y thumbnails and SEO keywords like “DIY,” “hack,” and “prank wars.” And to stand out from the thousands of other channels peddling the exact same service, they’ve turned to stranger and stranger content.
That’s how you end up with a video that recently went viral on Twitter, featuring a woman cutting off a (very long) strand of her hair, trimming it down to less than half an inch, and attaching it to the end of a pencil to create an eyeshadow brush. This, produced by the equally wild YouTube channel 5-Minute Crafts, is apparently an easier way to apply eyeshadow than using one’s fingers.
And yet it’s working. 5-Minute Crafts currently has the fifth most subscribers of any YouTube channel, nearly 40 million. According to Social Blade, its total of more than 10 billion video views translates to anywhere between $2 million and $34 million in annual earnings (the discrepancy here is from the varying possibilities of cost per impression). It’s estimated that Troom Troom, which currently boasts nearly 10 million subscribers and almost 3 billion total views of its surreal, pastel-plastered videos, pulls in between about $500,000 and $8 million each year.
Not only are Troom Troom and 5-Minute Crafts wildly successful in their own right, but they’re also part of the growing network of reaction videos to cringe-inducing content on the site, creating a cycle that generates millions of views for the YouTubers who engage with it.
But creators I spoke to also expressed concerns about these types of channels, ranging from their clickbait-y strategies to plagiarism to manipulating children’s internet behavior. The DIY YouTube space may not be all rainbows and unicorns, even if its thumbnails are full of them.
The fascinating mystery of Troom Troom
Troom Troom’s essential weirdness doesn’t just come from its how-tos being absurdly useless. They’re weird because they are narrated by a voiceover actress with a perfect American accent speaking a kind of English that sounds like it’s been run through about three layers of Google Translate. They’re weird because they feature a rotating cast of very thin white women who are referred to by nicknames like “the Blue-Eyed Girl,” “Redhead,” “Mrs. Smith,” or “Dolly,” and weirder still because those identities sometimes switch among them. They’re weird because it’s impossible to tell whether the whole thing is satire or if it’s part of a malicious Russian cyberattack targeting the YouTube-obsessed children of the world (but more on that later).
Besides being odd in its content and tone, Troom Troom is also incredibly elusive. No one can agree on who makes the videos, who owns the company, where it’s based, and who is making money off it. But that elusiveness invites speculation, and internet detectives have managed to puzzle out a few key pieces: first, that the website is registered under the name Eugene Miroshnykov, and second, that many of the videos are likely filmed in Odessa, Ukraine, judging by the Ukrainian Cyrillic script on many of the products used and the locations tagged on Troom Troom’s Instagram.
The identities of the actresses, too, have been largely exposed via their Instagram accounts. Most of them say they live in Odessa and are models and artists. The channel launched in 2015, and it’s clear from watching its earliest videos that Troom Troom began with standard DIY and didn’t reach its full weirdness — and biggest views — until about a year ago.
But there are still the requisite conspiracy theories: that Troom Troom is actually run by a millennial woman in San Francisco, or that the Troom Troom girls are being held against their will, forced to make weird DIY videos for ransom. Two media outlets that published stories on Troom Troom also failed to find out much else.
Which is why I was surprised when the email I sent to the address listed on Troom Troom’s YouTube page actually garnered a response. The sender’s name was indeed listed as Eugene Miroshnykov, confirming what I’d seen on Reddit, but after one back-and-forth, the name had been changed. To protect his anonymity — he expressed concerns about sleuths finding his phone number or other personal information — I agreed to refer to him by the nickname Zeon.
Zeon told me that Troom Troom was actually started by a collective of professional artists “that wanted to do something fun.” Zeon is not among these founders — he says he was hired when the channel already had a million subscribers and described his job as a “salesperson.” Writers and directors are based in Europe and the US and brainstorm video ideas via Skype, and then execute them within their own team. He described the company structure as similar to a “holacracy,” in which there is no top-down management and the content is instead “the result of the collective mind.”
“We got inspiration from [the world of] DIY text and picture tutorials,” he wrote. “Most of our team [is made up of] professional artists, so they found usually all the tutorials in text form, but not in the videos. We tried to solve that issue. Firstly, it was more educational and serious videos that [were] fun. Currently, we try to mix entertainment with DIY value. We found that any video should entertain if you want to make an impact on the viewers and not just to get them bored.”
This explains the heavy lifting that narration and plot serve in the average Troom Troom video — a “funny pranks” video is never just a list of pranks; it’s a story about how, say, “Dolly” sticks a plastic lizard into “Samantha’s” toothpaste and then replaces the inside of a lemon with a tennis ball. Later, Samantha gets back at Dolly by cutting out a hole in an iPhone case and placing it over a book so that it looks like Dolly’s phone literally burned through. The back-and-forth pranking only gets more complicated from there (I am not kidding).
Zeon says Troom Troom is independently owned, does not have any outside funding, and is profitable. “[It] has plans to grow, but the direction is currently confidential,” he adds. Zeon declined to connect me with the founders, nor did he provide any other details about his background or those of his co-workers, but I was easily able to find detailed Facebook and LinkedIn accounts that matched the name on his later emails, which leads me to believe that Zeon is, indeed, a real person.
The origins of 5-Minute Crafts are, for what it’s worth, far less mysterious. 5-Minute Crafts is owned by TheSoul Publishing, which says it produces an absolutely wild 1,500 videos a month, has 550 employees, and operates 40 Facebook pages in 10 languages. It owns mega-popular YouTube channels like Bright Side (animated videos that are a mix of riddles, facts, and “hacks”) and the 8 million-strong Facebook page You’re Gorgeous (your standard Facebook content farm content). Neither 5-Minute Crafts nor TheSoul Publishing responded to requests for an interview.
Notably, TheSoul Publishing is also based in Eastern Europe. According to a 2017 Forbes piece, the company was founded by the Russia-based Pavel Radaev and Marat Mukhametov, both of whom have backgrounds in social media content. To answer the implicit question, unlike many viral Facebook posts that came out of Russia over the past few years, TheSoul Publishing’s content does not appear to be overtly political.
5-Minute Crafts has four times as many subscribers as Troom Troom, but it’s supported by a 550-employee business. This raises the still-unanswered question: How many people work for Troom Troom? The channel is able to publish a 10- to 15-minute video every day, which requires a relatively large team, not to mention lots of money. For the most part, how they’re able to pull it off remains unclear.
Where crafting meets clickbait
To understand the rise of peculiar DIY videos, you have to understand the rest of YouTube. Videos on the platform succeed largely based on how well they cater to popular SEO keywords, and if they create a sense of urgency in the title (which often means using all caps and a ton of exclamation points), and use a visually striking thumbnail image — that’s why you’ll see a lot of disembodied lips biting into a strange object.
“I started noticing these really distinct, super-saturated, photoshopped thumbnails showing up in my recommended videos feed last year,” says Cristine Rotenberg, the 30-year-old YouTuber behind the nail art channel Simply Nailogical, which has 6 million subscribers. “It’s really strange. It’s like a lot of channels realized around the same time that photoshopped pictures of putting things near mouths get a lot of clicks.”
Bizarre projects with bait-y thumbnails is a strategy that plenty of channels have embraced, but that other established crafting players have rejected. Nifty, the home vertical owned by BuzzFeed, has invested in projects that its audience requests and is interested in actually attempting (unlike, say, an incredibly complicated DIY to make a mini box of Altoids as a prank, as one Troom Troom video offers). On these “normal” crafting channels, for lack of a better term, you’ll find how-tos for things like fall porch decor, headboard making, and pumpkin carving with thumbnails that reveal the actual product.
Erin Phraner, the supervising producer of Nifty, acknowledged the pressure that YouTube crafting channels face to game the algorithm and rely on bait-y titles. Nifty has also had its projects stolen by other craft channels. “It’s the reality of playing in that space,” Phraner says.
“Those types of thumbnails and titles and crazy hack projects definitely skew toward clickbait-y,” she adds. “But I think for us, our feeling is that you might see that pop up in the feed and click to watch it once because it seems kind of outlandish, but our whole business is we’re trying to build trust and create things that people actually want to bring into their home.”
For its part, YouTube says it’s already done the work of combating clickbait on the site. According to Youtube, since 2012, the algorithm has rewarded longer watch times over video clicks. So for instance, if users watch a video for a few seconds, realize it isn’t what they were expecting, and click out, that video wouldn’t show up in users’ feeds as often as one where viewers stuck around.
Plus, the term “clickbait” might not even apply when the actual tutorials on Troom Troom and 5-Minute Crafts are as wild as they are. Zeon explained that Troom Troom’s strategy is the opposite of Nifty’s — the videos are about entertainment, not service. And it’s their bizarro entertainment value that makes them perfectly suited to the current climate of cringe on YouTube, and commentary about that cringe.
Crafting, commentary, and cringe comedy
“There’s so much unintentional humor in Troom Troom videos,” says Rotenberg of Simply Nailogical. “I could make Troom Troom parodies every week and laugh for the rest of my life.”
So far, she’s only made a few. In one, she attempts Troom Troom’s “20 banana hacks,” which include making a “banana holster” out of felt and painting a smile on a banana peel; in another, she tries some back-to-school pranks, such as putting hay in somebody’s backpack.
Rotenberg’s videos are but a small sliver of the cottage industry that is the Troom Troom reaction video. Other popular creators like Danny Gonzalez, Cody Ko, and Jarvis Johnson have each garnered millions of views by satirizing Troom Troom and 5-Minute Crafts, using the standard YouTube reaction video format in which the host talks to the camera and reacts to clips from other videos.
It’s a cycle that’s lucrative for both the reactionaries and their targets. Johnson, who’s 26 and also has a full-time job working for Patreon in San Francisco, says that a reaction video he made about 5-Minute Crafts was a “huge catalyst” for growing his YouTube channel, which now has nearly half a million subscribers. Since then, he’s published a mini investigation on Troom Troom, as well as a video about the “dark side of Bright Side,” the sister channel to 5-Minute Crafts.
He says that while on the surface these sorts of channels are pretty innocuous, he does share concerns about clickbait, plagiarism, and their large audience of children. But ultimately, his reaction videos started as a joke — or rather, an exercise in telling jokes. “I thought commentary videos were a brilliant vessel for comedic writing that also fit in with what YouTube’s algorithm promotes,” he explains. “I happened upon a 5-Minute Crafts video called ‘20 Tips If You Spend Your Life in Front of Computer.’ At the time, I felt like I’d struck internet gold because I didn’t see anyone else talking about their absurd hacks.”
Because that’s the thing: Troom Troom videos are incredibly ripe for parody. The joy in watching them is largely based on their obvious absurdity — the uncanny narration, the knockoff–Disney Channel set design, the outlandishness of the projects.
Troom Troom videos are arguably part of Cringe YouTube, the ever-expanding network of uncomfortable and earnest videos that encompasses TikTok compilations, Instagram comedians, and former Vine dudes with creepy hair, among others. It’s difficult to point to a YouTube video that isn’t a little cringey in its own way, but within Cringe YouTube, it isn’t just the original videos that get views — it’s the never-ending cycle of reactions and commentary. PewDiePie, the most-subscribed YouTube channel of all time, for example, has built a career on making fun of other YouTubers’ attempts at earnestness.
On why the genre is so popular right now, Johnson guesses it’s because of “mystery, community, and the whole ‘so bad it’s good’ thing. If someone sees something super absurd and can share that with someone else, there’s a catharsis there.”
He also compares Troom Troom to a movie wildly considered to be one of the most unintentionally laughable films of all time. “As someone who is a die-hard fan of the Tommy Wiseau movie The Room, I see A LOT of similarities between The Room and Troom Troom,” he adds. “I feel like I should start a conspiracy theory about how Troom Troom is short for ‘The Room The Room.’”
And much like The Room, the question around Troom Troom, 5-Minute Crafts, and anyone who has ever made a bonkers video for the internet will always be the same: Are they in on the joke?
In the case of Troom Troom, it seems like the creators embrace the absurdity, even if it isn’t intentionally ironic. Zeon is aware of the intense, morbid fascination with the brand, and said that often, the “story creates the crafts,” meaning that at least some Troom Troom videos were not actually produced with the intent of teaching people how to make a thing — they’re just for fun.
But is weird DIY YouTube an exercise in satire? Probably not. And while there may not be an appetite for glue-stick cheese, there’s certainly an appetite for looking at it.

Move over, toy unboxers and bizarre Spiderman/Elsa cosplayers — there’s a new trend in the world of children’s videos, and no, I’m not talking about fidget spinners. Slime videos, in which amateur scientists mix glue and Borax (sodium borate) together to create a gooey, amorphous product, have taken off on YouTube over the past year, and some of the creators associated with the trend are now raking in big paydays thanks to their content.
The New York Times detailed the rise of the slime video phenomenon in a recent article. The Grey Lady’s report notes that slime-related searches on Etsy have increased 90 times over since October 2016, while sales of Elmer’s glue doubled in December of that year. On YouTube, an entire community of slimers (no, not him) has come into existence, with creators like Gillian Bower, Nichole Jacklyne, and Will It Slime attracting millions of subscribers and reeling in tens of millions of views.
The so-called “slime queen,” according to the New York Times, is Karina Garcia, whose DIY projects, many of which feature slime experiments, have received more than 723 million YouTube views. While many of the internet’s slimers sell their creators in order to make some money on the site, Garcia is influential enough to command lucrative sponsorships from brands like Audible, Coca-Cola, and Disney. “There are times when it’s $200,000 in a really good month,” she told the Times.

The rise of the slime genre is the latest example of the power of YouTube’s youngest viewers, who turn cute, kid-friendly channels into some of the video site’s most popular destinations. While I applaud the creators who have turned a fun, hands-on activity into a viral craze, I must also lament that I threw out the many slimes I made in elementary school art and science classes. How was I supposed to know they would have been worth millions of views one day?
