Formerly known as Calder Race Course, Gulfstream Park West is located in Miami Gardens, Fla. next to Pro Player Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins.

In the mids, real estate developer Stephen A. Calder envisioned summertime racing in Florida; and in , on the advice of Mr. Calder, the Florida Legislature approved a bill allowing for it. Prior to this time, a fall meet was held at Tropical Park Race Track in Miami and a spring meet at Gulfstream Park in Broward County. In , Stephen Calder received a permit for summertime racing but the meet was run at Tropical Park because construction was not complete at Calder. On May 6, Calder Race Course held its first day of racing. When William L. McKnight became the new owner of Tropical Park, he stated his intentions of closing the track and switching the dates to the Calder track, of which he was one of the principal investors. Racing ceased at Tropical Park in

The s brought about renovations and expansions and two purchases. The first purchase was by Bertram R. Firestone and the second was by Kawasaki Leasings, Inc. In the "Festival of the Sun" was introduced. By , simulcasting was introduced (so bets could be placed on Calder races from other tracks and off-track locations). The handle increased significantly and the track increased purses. In January , Churchill Downs Incorporated purchased Calder Race Course for approximately $86 million. In the first years of the new century the track introduced the "Florida Million" and the "Summit of Speed".

Calder's Summit of Speed has produced several Breeders’ Cup champions and Eclipse Award winners since its start in The Eclipse award is the highest honor bestowed in American racing. In its short history, the Summit of Speed has attracted some of the country's top sprinters, including Cajun Beat and Orientate who both went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint championship races (Orientate , Cajun Beat ). Plus, in , Lost in the Fog won at Calder, although was later defeated in the Breeders' Cup. The Summit of Speed has turned out to be the single biggest day in the history of Calder. In , over $ million was wagered on the event.

The "Florida Million" is a $ million dollar 8 race stakes program for Florida-breds taking place late in the year. These races consist of the $, Carl G. Rose Classic Handicap, the $, Bonnie Heath Turf Cup Handicap, the $, Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap, the $, Jack Dudley Sprint Handicap, the $, Arthur Appleton Juvenile Turf, the $, Joe O’Farrell Juvenile Fillies, the $, Jack Price Juvenile, and the $, John Franks Juvenile Fillies Turf.

In late, Calder changed its official name to Calder Casino & Race Course, and opened Studz Poker Club, a table card room located in the Grandstand.

In Churchill Downs Incorporated reached an agreement with The Stronach Group (TSG) in which TSG will operate and maintain the Calder race meet and training facilities through TSG renamed the Calder meet "Gulfstream Park West."

Meeting:  Gulfstream Park operates nearly year-round, except for a brief two-month hiatus in the fall when racing shifts to its sister track Gulfstream Park West (formerly Calder Race Course). Due to its balmy climate, Gulfstream becomes a major hub for racing in the winter, and it is during this time that the Championship Meet is conducted, which spans from December until the end of March. The Championship Meet is headlined by the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby, which is the track’s local prep for the Kentucky Derby, as well as the newly created $9 million Pegasus World Cup and the $7 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational, which are both meant to attract the best racehorses from around the globe. The Championship Meet features dozens of other graded stakes with massive purses, and lucrative stakes dot the schedule for the rest of the year, as well, though they’re not as concentrated as they are during the winter.

History:  Located in South Florida just north of Miami, Gulfstream Park opened in early and the inaugural meet lasted four days. From its humble beginnings, the track has become a year-round powerhouse in the sport, particularly in the winter, when many of the best horses and horsemen migrate to the track to take advantage of the warm climate. Countless stars have graced Gulfstream with their presence over the years. Perhaps the most famous race at the track occurred in the Breeders’ Cup, which Gulfstream was hosting for the first time, when Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Sunday Silence and Belmont Stakes winner Easy Goer clashed in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Gulfstream has since hosted the Breeders’ Cup two more times, once in and again in The elegant track has thrived under its current ownership, The Stronach Group, who have transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility, one very much worthy of the elite thoroughbreds that call it home.

Facilities:  On top of the high-caliber, year-round racing Gulfstream offers, the track also boasts over Vegas-style slot machines and a poker room with over 20 live-action tables. The grounds are also home to an open-air mall known as The Village at Gulfstream Park. Admission to the track is always free.
