Fox 36 Float Factory FIT4 is targeted more at riders who treat heading up, down and around the mountain equally, rather than simply prioritising the downs.

>>> Best mountain bike suspension forks

Fox offers two separate 36 Floats forks – the FIT4 and Grip2 &#; both sharing the same sturdy chassis. Last year we tested the Fox 36 Float Factory Grip2, and it scored an excellent 9/ Now it&#;s the turn of the newly revised, but less complex, FIT4 model.

The fork retains its three-position firming lever (that can almost lock the fork for climbing), and adjustable dial to tune damping support in the open mode. This Factory model uses slippery, Kashima-coated stanchions with a sealed damper cartridge, and it&#;s in here that the biggest changes lie.

Fox 36 Float Factory FIT4

Three-position lever with open-mode damping dial

FIT4’s latest damper uses technology carried over from Fox’s XC Step-Cast forks, with the shaft diameter reduced from 10mm to 8mm. Less damper oil is therefore displaced during a high-velocity impact; so harder hits are absorbed more smoothly. The adjuster dial should also be capable of more compression damping without adding extra harshness.

Whether it’s this new design, or the oversized, EVOL negative air spring helping the fork into its travel, the 36 slurps at the ground for tracking and grip. Even straight out of the box, it’s fantastically smooth around the sag point with as much outright sensitivity as anything else out there.

Fox 36 Float Factory FIT4

FIT4 damper offers a super-smooth action

On the longest descents (running the same handlebar height and similar sensitivity levels), the Fox rides marginally lower than a RockShox Lyrik, so we added an extra volume spacer for more progression and support on steeper tracks. It’s then harder to utilise the full mm travel as effectively as the new Lyrik on the biggest hits though.

The 36 has a smooth, rounded feel when absorbing spikey impacts like deep root webs and small drops and hits. We’ve always run older FIT4 forks fully open for maximum sensitivity and hand comfort, but the result can be a more hyperactive and hectic feel, so we tested Fox’s claims about the new FIT4 working better with more compression damping.

At three or four clicks in (in open mode), there’s a sportier feel on most trails but the fork retains great suppleness. Although really aggressive riders who work the chassis hard might notice the 36 feels marginally less smooth than RockShox’s Lyrik when charging jagged braking ruts and big repeated rocks. On the exact same terrain, it transmits more feedback into the forearms, so it&#;s harder to look ahead and ignore what&#;s going on underneath your wheels.

With a good set-up, Fox’s pricier multi-adjustable Grip2 model brings another level of damping smoothness, stability and composure to the 36 for pure descending, but it lacks the lock out option and ultra-sensitivity of this truly versatile FIT4 model.

36 & 38 Floating Axle

FLOATING AXLE

Floating axles might look similar to other axles, but in fact they offer a distinct performance advantage due to their unique ability to match the exact width of the fork’s wheel mounting surface precisely to the front hub flange spacing, thus creating perfect chassis alignment and eliminating unwanted friction between the upper and lower fork legs. Floating axles provide much smoother suspension movement throughout the entire range of the fork’s travel, notably improving sensitivity and overall ride quality.

The all-new 36 and 38 come equipped with a new quick-release lever operated patent-pending floating axle system, combining the benefit of a floating axle with the ease of a tool-free quick-release. With this system, spacing is locked in via a floating sleeve, allowing repeated front wheel removal and reinstallation while maintaining perfect fork alignment. Floating sleeve positioning comes preset from the factory so if you are unsure of how to operate the floating axle system or simply don’t want to bother with it, you can just install the front wheel and get on with your ride.

Available optionally is the new Kabolt-X, a lightweight bolt-on floating axle exclusively for the all-new 36 and 38 that not only shaves grams but also increases torsional stiffness via its sleeveless, single-sided pinch bolt design. Chassis alignment must be reset each time the front wheel is removed and reinstalled on both the Kabolt-X and 40 floating axles, but the end result is the same – perfect alignment and perfect performance.

Lower Leg Channels

LOWER LEG BYPASS CHANNELS

As a fork compresses, the air volume within the lower legs decreases, increasing air pressure. The more the fork compresses, the more pressure increases. This effect can have the unintended consequence of preventing full travel from being achieved. Our lower leg channels help alleviate this issue by dramatically increasing air volume within the lower legs and thereby reducing the amount of additional unintended pressure ramping.

Another benefit of these channels is that lower leg bath oil is circulated to the upper reaches of the lower legs, continuously lubricating the foam rings and bushings as the fork compresses and extends through its travel.

Lower Leg Channels
Bleeders

BLEEDERS

Our lower leg bleeders allow for atmospheric pressure equalization at the simple press of a button. Pressure build-up in the lower legs dramatically decreases fork performance, preventing full travel from being achieved, and diminishing small bump sensitivity and responsiveness.

Lower Leg Arch

LOWER LEG ARCH

Stiffness-to-weight is the ultimate metric for bicycle design. Engineers invest countless hours poring over every ounce of material in an effort to optimize this critical ratio. Our all-new lower leg design pulls out all the stops, shaving every possible gram while making sure not to compromise stiffness or strength requirements of modern enduro and gravity style riding.

Modern frame designs and geometry trends require modern suspension design solutions. The arch design of the all-new 36, 38, and 40 is designed to pair perfectly with modern Enduro and Downhill bikes. Head tube profiles have grown larger and larger, and fork offsets shorter and shorter. Our new arch shape takes this need into account by jutting forward to provide ample headtube clearance at full compression. State-of-the-art computer modeling techniques helped us to create an organic lower leg shape that optimizes stiffness with the absolute minimal amount of material.

Lower Leg Arch
GRIP2

GRIP2

Our GRIP2 damper is the benchmark for unparalleled ride quality and ultra-precise adjustability. GRIP2 includes our patented Variable Valve Control (VVC) technology which allows for external fine-tuning of suspension performance. GRIP2 achieves with the twist of a knob what typically requires the time consuming and complicated task of completely disassembling and reassembling the fork.

FLOAT EVOL

FLOAT EVOL

EVOL technology increases negative air spring volume, optimizing small bump sensitivity. EVOL’s linear spring curve delivers plushness off the top, extra mid-stroke support, and more tunable bottom-out progression.

The benefits of EVOL are further enhanced by our new Lower Leg channels and Bleeders, which both function to reduce air pressure captured in the lower legs, allowing the EVOL air spring to operate freely without unintended interference.

Fox 36 Factory Fit 4 On a Giant Trance

Fox 36 Float FIT4 Factory fork review

Fox’s 36 fork has always sat near the top of our wild riding wishlist and for it’s got even better.

This is largely down to the new ‘EVOL’ air spring, which uses a larger negative chamber to provide a softer initial feel and more mid-stroke support. The FIT4 damper has been tweaked too, and now has a slightly more forgiving feel over high-speed hits.

The damper tune is good too, providing a relatively supple feel over small bumps yet not giving too much travel away when faced with harder hits

I found I needed slightly more air pressure than Fox recommended for my weight to get the correct sag (96psi, rather than 80–89psi), along with two volume spacers to get the fork ramping up nicely towards the end of its stroke.

Unless I was riding steep low-speed tracks, I kept the low-speed compression damping dial turned towards the fully open end of its range of adjustment.

On the trail, the performance of the new 36 is really impressive. When tested back to back with a RockShox Lyrik RCT3 (£ / $1,), the Fox fork felt noticeably suppler, offering more traction and a glued-to-the-trail feel.

I also noticed less hand pain and feedback on long, rough descents. Yet the Fox also offered a touch more support, remaining higher in its travel when thrown into gnarly rock gardens, never diving unexpectedly and bottoming out less readily.

That EVOL air spring makes the beginning stroke super-supple, so it doesn’t take much force to get the fork moving. This results in a planted feel and loads of grip.

Support builds gradually throughout the mid stroke, and the fork doesn’t ramp up too suddenly as you reach the end of the travel. It feels smoother than the Lyrik too — almost like it’s coil rather than air-sprung.

The damper tune is good too, providing a relatively supple feel over small bumps yet not giving too much travel away when faced with harder hits. Trail chatter or pedalling gets the fork moving through its travel easily, suggesting the 36 doesn’t have much in the way of binding friction.

The fork has a respectably long service life of hours (the Lyrik’s is 50 hours). When my test sample was opened up after over hours of riding everything from Italian dust to the finest Welsh slop, the foam rings under the wiper seals were a little dirty and servicing made it feel slightly smoother. But it wasn’t the night-and-day difference of a fork desperate for a bit of TLC.

My only gripe with the 36 is a noticeable top-out “thwunk” when pulling up hard on the bar. Fox promised a rolling change to the air spring to fix this, but my updated spring still tops out when really wrenching on the bar or bunnyhopping. Although noticeable, the noise isn’t that annoying during general riding.

Overall, the Fox 36 provides bags of hard-charging support with gobs of traction-extracting sensitivity. It’s comfortable yet confidence inspiring. If you’ve got the cash, and don’t mind the occasional top-out knock, the performance is top class.

Factory fox fit4 36

36 Factory Float FIT4 BOOST MTB suspension fork

Since its launch in , the 36 Factory is the reliable workhorse of FOX when it comes to the toughest trails in the world. With the introduction of the FOX 38 (prod. code ), the US suspension specialists have, however, slightly revised their in-house classification and "degraded" the 36 of the model year to an all-mountain fork. Since the understanding of All-mountain and Enduro is quite different in the USA than it is here, this does not mean it is less powerful – on the contrary!

With a revised design on the outside and proven FIT4 damping on the inside, the FOX 36 FIT4 impresses with an outstanding combination of performance, tunability, high stiffness and low weight. 3 directly adjustable compression settings (Open, Medium, Firm) allow a lightning-fast adjustment to different terrain conditions. Moreover, the suspension fork comes with 22 clicks low-speed compression in open mode to perfectly adapt the riding qualities to the pilot’s preferences.

More Details of the Fox 36 Float FIT4 Factory

Factory says it all - feature packed and designed to exceed the demands of Factory level riders. Factory series products feature slippery smooth, ultra-durable Genuine Kashima Coat.

The patented FIT4 closed cartridge system provides three on-the-fly compression damping positions (Open, Medium, Firm) to adapt to varying trail conditions. Factory series forks feature an additional 22 clicks of low-speed compression adjust in the Open mode, allowing riders to fine-tune their exact damping preferences. Additionally the low-speed rebound (10 clicks) can be adjusted.

The lightweight FLOAT air spring system automatically equalizes the positive and negative air chambers for increased sensitivity and traction, regardless of the air pressure setting. Riders can fine tune the characteristics of the positive air spring using volume spacers. The shorter upper tube length raises the floor of the magnesium lower leg assembly, creating a hollow lower section and a light overall system.

The floating axle might look similar to other axles, but in fact they offer a distinct performance advantage due to their unique ability to match the exact width of the fork’s wheel mounting surface precisely to the front hub flange spacing, thus creating perfect chassis alignment and eliminating unwanted friction between the upper and lower fork legs. Floating axles provide much smoother suspension movement throughout the entire range of the fork’s travel, notably improving sensitivity and overall ride quality.

As a fork compresses, the air volume within the lower legs decreases, increasing air pressure. The more the fork compresses, the more pressure increases. This effect can have the unintended consequence of preventing full travel from being achieved. The lower leg channels help alleviate this issue by dramatically increasing air volume within the lower legs and thereby reducing the amount of additional unintended pressure ramping.

The lower leg bleeders allow for atmospheric pressure equalization at the simple press of a button. Pressure build-up in the lower legs dramatically decreases fork performance, preventing full travel from being achieved, and diminishing small bump sensitivity and responsiveness.

Stiffness-to-weight is the ultimate metric for bicycle design. Engineers invest countless hours poring over every ounce of material in an effort to optimize this critical ratio. The all-new lower leg design pulls out all the stops, shaving every possible gram while making sure not to compromise stiffness or strength requirements of modern enduro and gravity style riding.

Modern frame designs and geometry trends require modern suspension design solutions. The arch is designed to pair perfectly with modern Enduro and Downhill bikes. State-of-the-art computer modeling techniques helped FOX to create an organic lower leg shape that optimizes stiffness with the absolute minimal amount of material. The elliptical steer tube is one of many ways FOX has further optimized stiffness-to-weight, placing more material only where it is needed, and eliminating every ounce of it where it’s not.
