Pokmon Sun and Moon Happiness: How to increase Happiness fast and Happiness checker location

Pokémon Sun and Moon Happiness and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Happiness is one of the more obtuse mechanics in the game. While there are many ways for Pokémon Sun and Moon Evolutions to take place, some require you to raise a Pokémon's Happiness to a certain level before it can move onto the next evolution, and so learning how the mechanic works and how to increase it pays off.

There are multiple methods that'll get you your Alolan Persian, Silvally or Snorlax in no time, which we've outlined for you below.

Pokémon Sun and Moon Happiness: How it works, how it's used and Happiness checker location in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Happiness - also known as friendliness, but not to be confused with 'affection' in Pokémon Refresh - is a hidden stat that determines how close a Pokémon is to its trainer. It's primary use is to evolve certain Pokémon, but it can also change the effectiveness of moves 'Return' and 'Frustration', where high or low friendship will improve their strength respectively.

There's a specific, hidden number for your Pokémon's happiness, starting at zero and up as far as and beyond. Pokémon that require happiness to evolve will do so from when they level up whilst having a happiness of or above - but seeing as this is a hidden stat, there's no way to know exactly how much happiness they have in game.

There are ways to tell your Pokémon's approximate happiness though. For starters, most Pokémon will be caught with a base happiness of 70 (barring some exclusions like Happiny, Chansey and Blissey, which start on , or Type: Null and Silvally who start on zero).

Likewise, to check the approximate Happiness of your Pokémon, in both the regular or Ultra versions you can visit the market in Konikoni City where the lady near the TM shop will inform you of its value with a certain phrase. If she says "You clearly love your Pokémon, and you must spend a lot of time together." then the Pokémon is happy enough to evolve, or very close to it, and if she says "My! It feels incredibly close to you! Nothing makes it happier than being with you!" then it'll definitely evolve the next time it levels up.

New Happiness evolutions in Pokémon Sun and Moon are:

  • Alolan Meowth to Alolan Persian
  • Type: Null to Silvally

Pokémon that require Happiness to evolve from previous generations are:

  • Azurill to Marill
  • Budew to Roselia (daytime only)
  • Buneary to Lopunny
  • Chansey to Blissey
  • Chilngling to Chimecho (nightime only)
  • Eevee to Espeon (daytime only)
  • Eevee to Umbreon (nightime only)
  • Golbat to Crobat
  • Igglybuff to Jigglypuff
  • Munchlax to Snorlax
  • Pichu to Pikachu
  • Riolu to Lucario (daytime only)
  • Togepi to Togetic
  • Swadloon to Leavanny
  • Woobat to Swoobat

How to increase Pokémon Happiness fast in Pokémon Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

The fastest way to increase happiness in Sun and Moon is by catching the Pokémon of your choice in a Friend Ball, which grants a boost of to their base happiness, or a Luxury Ball, which increases the rate at which other happiness-boosting activities will increase your Pokémon's cheer.

If you've already caught your Pokémon though, then the next best option is to get them a Lomi Lomi Massage over in Konikoni City again, which can be done once per day. That, combined with keeping them in your party whilst you walk around Alola and avoiding any chance of them being knocked out should do it for you pretty quickly.

Other ways to increase Happiness in Pokémon Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Of course, there are plenty of ways Happiness can be increased outside of those mentioned above, but the easiest and most effective are those below, which have remained largely the same since Generation 6:

  • Catching in a Friend Ball - Very high initial Happiness boost (+)
  • Catching in a Luxury Ball - Doubles all future Happiness; you can find one from Malie Garden
  • Holding a Soothe Bell - Doubles Happiness gains; from Route 3
  • Lomi Lomi Massage - in Konikoni City, provides a decent boost to happiness (+30 if current happiness is below , +10 if between and , and +5 if over )
  • Eating certain Berries - Hondew, Qualot, Tamato Berries - Small boost to Happiness (+10, +5, +2)
  • Levelling up - Small boost to Happiness (+5, +4, +3)
  • Using a Vitamin - Small boost to Happiness (+5, +3, +2)
  • Walking steps - Small boost to Happiness (+2, +2, +1)

Note that fainting will decrease happiness, if only slightly, as do certain herbs like the Revival Herb. Also, if you trade a Pokémon away and receive it again later, it'll return to its original state of base Happiness.

What is Friendship?

Friendship is a status that shows how much emotional attachment a Pokemon has to its Trainer. The happiness level cannot be seen in game as a numerical value, or is it visible in any form of data. Some players refer to it as a Pokemon&#;s &#;happiness&#;. Some Pokemon rely on thier happiness level and cannot evolve if it&#; too low.

Confirming Your Pokemon&#;s Friendship

As stated above, although the status cannot be confirmed through numerical values in game, it is, however, possible to know through context clues given by NPCs.

Being told, &#;My! It feels incredibly close to you! Nothing makes it happier than being with you!&#; tells you that your Pokemon has attained max happiness.

While being told &#;Hmmm. I think…it feels friendly toward you. At least a little…&#;, shows that you and your Pokemon are making progress with your Pokemon&#;s happiness.

When being told, &#;What is going on here? Do you let it get knocked out a lot in battles or something? This is bad.&#;, it means that your Pokemon&#;s happiness level is low.

And finally, &#;Oh dear. You must be a merciless Trainer… Do you use Frustration or just not know better?&#;, means that your happiness level is at zero.

How to Raise Your Pokemon&#;s Friendship

  • Walking with your Pokemon raises its happiness slighty.
  • Catching Pokemon through a Friend Ball instantly increases its happiness to or even more.
  • Lomi Lomi Massages that can be found Konikoni City gives your Pokemon large boosts to its happiness. The happiness they receive through the massages give a lot more if your Pokemon has low friendship to begin with.
  • EV Vitamins also boosts your Pokemon&#;s Happiness.
  • Eating berries like Qualot, Tamato and Hondew also boosts your Pokemon&#;s Happiness.

Keep in mind, however, that your Pokemon&#;s happiness level decreases when your Pokemon faints in battle. So keep this in mind when you are trying to raise your Pokemon&#;s happiness and switch them out when they are nearing to faint.

Reason: Generation VIII information, manga section

Friendship (Japanese: なつき度degree of emotional attachment), also referred to as loyalty in Generation II core series games, tame in Pokémon Stadium 2, and friendliness in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and commonly referred to by fans as happiness, is a measurement of how much a Pokémon is attached to its Trainer and enjoys being in their care.

It affects the evolution of certain Pokémon, the power of Return and Frustration, and the availability of a few in-game items and Ribbons. Certain events increase a Pokémon's friendship (gaining a level, walking a certain amount of steps) or decrease it (fainting, using herbal medicine).

Friendship was introduced in Pokémon Yellow for the player's starter Pikachu only, and expanded to cover all Pokémon in Generation II.

In Generation VI, Affection, a separate mechanic, was introduced. However, from Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! onward, Affection no longer exists and friendship has all of its effects instead.

In the core and side series games

Friendship debuted in Generation I as a mechanic that applied only to the player's Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow. In Generation II, it was expanded to cover all Pokémon. In all games, friendship is a value that ranges from 0 to (stored as a single byte). In Pokémon Yellow, Pikachu's friendship is indicated by the expression it shows when the player talks to it, but in later games, certain NPCs in the games will evaluate the friendship of a Pokémon in the player's party.

A Pokémon's friendship is generally set when the player first obtains it. When a Pokémon is first caught from the wild, its friendship starts at its base friendship value. Trading a Pokémon also resets its friendship to its base value, unless it is being traded back to its original Trainer in Generation VI or later, in which case it regains the friendship it had before being traded away. A Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with friendship instead of its base friendship, while a Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with friendship.

Friendship is generally increased by taking good care of a Pokémon. Keeping a Pokémon in the player's party, raising it, using items on it, and getting it groomed will all increase a Pokémon's friendship. Letting it faint and using bitter herbal medicines on it will decrease a Pokémon's friendship.

Boosting friendship

Diglett.pngThis section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: Check whether friendship is boosted at the met location in Colosseum

In Pokémon Crystal, if a Pokémon is leveled up at its met location, it will gain twice as much friendship from that level up as usual. Since only Pokémon caught in Pokémon Crystal have a defined met location, Pokémon caught in the Generation I games, Pokémon Gold and Silver, and Pokémon from in-game trades will not receive this bonus. If a Pokémon that has a defined met location is traded to a Generation I game, this data is permanently erased, so it can no longer receive this bonus.

From Generation III onward, if a Pokémon was caught in a Luxury Ball, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. In Generation III (except Pokémon XD) and from Generation V onward, if a Pokémon is currently at the same location where it was caught (its met location), any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. If a Pokémon is holding a Soothe Bell, increases to its friendship are boosted by 50% of the change—in Generation III, the increase is applied to the original change in friendship; in subsequent generations, it applies to the friendship change after including Luxury Ball and met location bonuses.

In Generation V, the Befriending Power Pass Power boosts any increase to friendship by one to three points depending on the strength of the power used. In Generation VI, the Befriending Power O-Power has the same effect. Befriending Power does not exist in Generation VII.

None of these effects change the amount of friendship lost for negative changes or for changes of 0 (such as using an X Attack on a Pokémon with high friendship).

Mechanics using friendship

In Pokémon Yellow, friendship affected very little beyond the reactions Pikachu would show when interacted with. A notable exception is the woman in Cerulean City who will only give the player a Bulbasaur if Pikachu has high friendship.

Starting in Generation II, there are Pokémon that evolve by friendship, which can only evolve if they have friendship or more. Additionally, the moves Return and Frustration vary in power depending on how high or low the user's friendship is.

From Generation IV onward, there is a Ribbon for Pokémon with maximum friendship, the Footprint Ribbon.

Some NPCs also only give gifts or teach moves when the player's Pokémon has a certain amount of friendship. Specifically, a Pokémon must have maximized friendship to learn Draco Meteor, Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, or Water Pledge in any generation.

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Nameless Cavern becomes unlocked once the player has three Pokémon with maximum friendship on their team.

Moves

Friendship affects the following moves.

In-battle bonuses

Pokémon Sword and Shield

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, due to affection being merged with friendship, friendship has several in-battle effects. These effects do not occur in link battles, Battle Tower and Restricted Sparring.

  • Moderate chance of recovering from status conditions on its own
  • Very small chance of avoiding an opponent's move
  • Increased critical hit ratio

In addition, Pokémon with at least 1 heart may find items after cooking together at Pokémon Camp.

Generation I

In Pokémon Yellow, there is a friendship system exclusively for the player's starter Pikachu. Any Pikachu that the player is the Original Trainer of (according to their Original Trainer name and Trainer ID number) is treated as the player's starter Pikachu. Raichu and Outsider Pikachu are not affected, even if the Raichu was the player's starter Pokémon but evolved (which can only be done by first trading it to another game).

The starter Pikachu follows the player in the overworld, if it is in the party and not fainted (if the player has multiple, Pikachu will follow if the first starter Pikachu in the party is not fainted). If the player interacts with Pikachu, a window will pop up showing Pikachu's face, and the expression is affected by Pikachu's current friendship (though certain special events may elicit special reactions unrelated to Pikachu's current friendship). At maximum friendship, Pikachu jumps up and down before the window appears.

In Cerulean City, Melanie gives the player a Bulbasaur if the starter Pikachu's friendship is or higher. The player does not need to have Pikachu in the party or even in the game itself to receive this Bulbasaur. This is the only significance of friendship outside of interacting with Pikachu.

Pikachu starts with a base friendship of Various actions can increase or decrease Pikachu's friendship level.

There is a single friendship value per game, and it remains even if the starter Pikachu is traded away. Trading away Pikachu will decrease its friendship, but this decreased value will be remembered when it returns. If the player has multiple Pikachu which qualify as their starter Pikachu in a single game, all of these Pikachu share the same friendship value, so any friendship-modifying event applies to all of them.

Vitamins, battle items and HP-restoring items increase Pikachu's friendship even if they have no effect. For example, attempting to use a Potion on a Pikachu that has fainted or has full health, an Antidote when Pikachu is not poisoned, Calcium when Pikachu has already reached its maximum Specialstat experience, or X Special when the Special stat has already been raised 6 stages in battle. This does not consume the item, so the same item can repeatedly increase Pikachu's friendship. Waking Pikachu up with the Poké Flute (either in or out of battle) does not change its friendship.

Generation II

In Generation II, friendship was expanded to cover all Pokémon. All Pokémon have a base friendship of 70, but any Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with friendship and any Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with friendship.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, an NPC who will evaluate the friendship of the first Pokémon in the player's party can be found at Goldenrod City.

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, an NPC who will evaluate the friendship of the first Pokémon in the player's party can be found at Verdanturf Town.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Daisy Oak in Pallet Town will perform the same service of evaluating a Pokémon's friendship, and she will additionally offer grooming to increase a Pokémon's friendship once every steps the player takes.

In addition, in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the degree to which a Pokémon moves towards the screen after an item is used on it will also indicate how high its friendship is.

The friendship rater is located inside the Krabby Club in Gateon Port. He is upstairs, straight to the rear of the club (not the ones backstage) and standing near the bartender. He looks like a boat captain. He is present after starting the events in Pyrite Town.

How to catch GUZZLORD in Pokemon Ultra Sun \u0026 Ultra Moon

Pokemon Sun & Pokemon Moon Wiki Guide

All Pokemon will have zero happiness when first captured, unless you use a Luxury Ball to capture them. The happiness of the Pokemon will slowly build over time. There are a few things you can do or avoid doing to make sure a Pokemon's happiness level increases quickly.

How to Raise Happiness in Pokemon Sun and Moon

  • Use the Pokemon in battle
  • Catch the Pokemon in a Luxury Ball
  • Use Vitamins on the Pokemon
  • Allow the Pokemon to hold the item Soothe Bell
  • Give it massages from the Masseuse in Konikoni City.
  • Feed it a meal from the Restaurants Rare Kitchen, Friendship Cafe, Friendship Parlor, or Battle Table in the Festival Plaza.

Use Berries

These Berries increase Happiness while lowering EV points (which is actually very helpful when EV Training). While holding the Soothe Bell, most Pokemon will reach max Happiness after consuming 20 of these berries.

How to Lower Happiness

  • Allow the Pokemon to faint in battle
  • Use bitter items on the Pokemon
  • Keep the Pokemon stored in the PC
  • Trade the Pokemon

How to Check Happiness in Pokemon Sun and Moon

In the same market where the Masseuse is in Konikoni City is a woman who will tell you about your Pokemon's Happiness. If she says, "My! It feels incredibly close to you! Nothing makes it happier than being with you!" you know your Pokemon is as happy as it can possibly be.

Attacks Affected by Happiness

Happiness is used to calculate the attack power of the attacks Return and Frustration. The higher the happiness, the stronger Return will be, and the lower the happiness, the stronger Frustration will be.

Pokemon Who Evolve with Happiness

Certain Pokemon can only evolve if they are friendly enough toward you. Sometimes Happiness is needed along with an item, select time, or select location to evolve.
