Joon Y. Kim, M.D.

Dr. Joon Kim is the Medical Director and President of Clayton Eye Center. He received his B.S. from Brown University, and obtained his M.D. from the University of Alabama, where he also completed his Ophthalmology Residency.

Dr. Kim has pioneered a new type of cataract surgery that avoids anesthetic injections. Most ophthalmologists today begin cataract surgery with an anesthetic injection that involves inserting a 1.5 inch needle below the eye into the eye socket, which could damage the eyeball or optic nerve. These injections create one of cataract surgery’s greater risks.

Dr. Kim also helped pioneer small incision cataract surgery some years ago and soon after began doing one-stitch cataract surgery. Finally, Dr. Kim began no-stitch cataract surgery and continues to be on the forefront in the world among cataract surgeons.

Dr. Kim is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Medical Association of Georgia, Georgia Society of Ophthalmology and the Korean Medical Association of Georgia.

 


Jennifer Kim, M.D.

Dr. Kim is a board certified ophthalmologist, specializing in cataract surgery. She is highly trained in modern, no-stitch, cataract surgery, and experienced in utilizing new technologies, including premium lens implant options to correct astigmatism and presbyopia. Dr. Kim also focuses on the medical management of glaucoma, diabetic eye diseases, and ocular surface diseases, such as dry eye syndromes and blepharitis.

Dr. Kim attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering. She subsequently earned a medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. During medical school, she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She also became interested in international medicine and traveled twice to Haiti with Project Medishare to provide basic eye care to those in need.

Dr. Kim completed an internship in Internal Medicine at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She then continued her training with a residency in ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta. At Emory, Dr. Kim was appointed Chief Resident of Ophthalmology for two consecutive years.

After completing residency, Dr. Kim was invited to take a one-year position as a Clinical Instructor at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. In that role, she instructed ophthalmology residents, staffed all inpatient ophthalmology consults, and performed eye trauma surgery.

Dr. Kim is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology.

A native Atlantan, Dr. Kim is thrilled to be back in her hometown and working alongside her father. When she’s not practicing ophthalmology, she enjoys traveling, exercising, dining, and spending time with her husband, Josh, her daughters (Juniper and Jolene), and her dog ( Charlie).

 


Harvey DuBiner, M.D.

Honoring the memory of one of the most prolific Glaucoma clinical researchers.

Dr. Harvey Bruce DuBiner, passed away at home on August 25, 2020, just a few weeks after being diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive cancer. He received his MD degree at Chicago Medical School in 1979. Dr. DuBiner completed his medical training with an ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University, New Orleans, in 1983, and a fellowship as a glaucoma specialist, with Thom Zimmerman, MD, PhD, in Louisville, KY, in 1988. He served for 38 years as a glaucoma clinician and scientific researcher. Along with his beloved wife, Helen, a pharmacist, they completed over 250 clinical research studies, many of which led to the approval of medications and devices to treat ophthalmology patients. His thoughtful attitude, medical training, and surgical skill preserved the eyesight of thousands of patients who came under his care. Harvey was adored by his family, friends, and colleagues. He was known for his patience, humor, mentoring skills, and kind, gentle nature. Dr. DuBiner was apart of the Clayton Eye Center family for more than 30 years and he will be missed.

 


David d’Heurle, M.D.

Dr. David d’Heurle has been with Clayton Eye Center since 1987. He received his B.A. from Manhattanville College and obtained his M.D. from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed an Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Virginia Hospital and a Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

A published author and lecturer, Dr. d’Heurle is a member of the American Medical Association, Georgia Society of Ophthalmology and the Vitreous Society.

 


John C. Allen, M.D.

Dr. John Allen completed his B.S. in Chemistry with specialization in Biochemistry at the University of Virginia, graduating with Distinction.  He subsequently obtained his medical degree from Wake Forest University school of Medicine.  While in medical school he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honors society.  He also was awarded multiple honors for his international work in Guatemala, Ghana, and Gabon.  Dr. Allen completed his intern year as well as his residency in ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  He continued his subspecialty fellowship training in glaucoma at Emory University.

Dr. Allen specializes in modern techniques of cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery.  He is highly trained in Micro Invasive Glaucoma Surgical techniques (MIGS), trabeculectomy, tube shunt implantation, and glaucoma laser therapies. He is a skilled cataract surgeon and experienced with premium lens options for correction of astigmatism and presbyopia for patients who are candidates.

Dr. Allen is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, and the American Glaucoma Society.

 


Julia Kang, M.D.

Dr. Julia Kang is a board-certified ophthalmologist originally from St. Louis, MO, and attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN for undergraduate school, where she majored in psychology and pre-professional studies. Inspired by her semester abroad in Puebla, Mexico, she developed a passion for public/global health. She moved to Miami, FL to obtain her medical degree and Masters in Public Health from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Kang completed her internship at Norwalk Hospital, affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine. She then continued her ophthalmology residency training at the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, GA. As a resident, she had the opportunity to travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with Orbis, the flying eye hospital. She completed her oculoplastic & reconstructive surgery fellowship at the Central Valley Eye Medical Group in Stockton, CA. After graduation, she spent time abroad in Seoul, Korea learning oculoplastic techniques at the Samsung and Asan Medical Center, as well as Nune Eye Hospital. She has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and as an artist, she has contributed medical illustrations for different oculoplastic surgery book chapters. Dr. Kang manages both functional and cosmetic concerns involving the eyelids.

 


Peter Chen, O.D., PhD

Dr. Peter Chen earned a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Medical College of Georgia and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the SUNY College of Optometry. He has also completed a residency in Primary Care and Ocular Diseases. Dr. Chen is Board Certified and has numerous articles published. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, Georgia Optometric Association and the American Biochemistry Society.

Dr. Chen enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter and dog, and enjoys swimming and home improvement.

 


Myong S. Lee, O.D., M.S.

Dr. Myong Lee received her B.S. from Wellesley College and received her medical degree with honors from the University of Alabama School of Optometry. She has a master’s degree in Physiological Optics and has extensively researched the retinal ganglion cells. Dr. Lee is a staff optometrist at the Clayton Eye Center, where she has been practicing since 1987.

 


Carey Phlong, M.S.Ed, O.D.

A native to Atlanta, Dr. Phlong earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science Education from Georgia State University. She then graduated with Honors from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry. Dr. Phlong completed a residency in Primary Care with an emphasis in Ocular Disease at Clayton Eye Center before joining the practice as a staff doctor.

Dr. Phlong provides comprehensive eye exams in addition to assisting with postoperative cataract care. She also participates in numerous clinical research studies. Dr. Phlong serves as residency coordinator and works with the optometric externs.

 


Brenton Smith, O.D.

Dr. Brenton Smith received his B.S at the University of Georgia and his Doctor of Optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. He was a previous resident of Ocular Disease at Clayton Eye Center before starting full time in 2017.

He provides full scope eye care including comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fitting, disease management and surgery co-management. He also works extensively with the Clayton Eye Center research department.

Dr. Smith married his best friend from Optometry school and she practices in McDonough, GA. He enjoys camping, fishing and golf in his spare time.

 


Daniel Strait, O.D.

Dr. Daniel Strait received his B.S. from Auburn University and his Optometry degree from the University of Alabama.

Dr. Strait joined the Clayton Eye Center in 1998, and is a Board certified Optometrist who has been in practice since 1977. His area of interests includes dry eye, contact lenses and sport vision.

Dr. Strait participated in investigations with Bausch & Lomb and American Hydron Contact Lenses and Solutions. He was a clinical consultant to OmniEye Services. He continued his education by passing the International Association of Board of Examiners in Optometry.

He has been active in the American Optometric Association, Southern Council of Optometry and the Fifth District Optometric Association.

Dr. Strait is married with two children. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing tennis and hunting.

 


Diem My T. Bui, O.D.

Dr. Diem My T. Bui earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Mercer University. She then went on to receive her Bachelor of Vision Science and Doctor of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University. Following her Doctorate degree, she completed a year of residency at Clayton Eye Center with an emphasis in Ocular Disease before joining the practice. 

Dr. Bui provides a full scope of eye care which includes comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fitting, medical eye care, and cataract pre and post-operative care.

She is an active member of the American Optometric Association and Georgia Optometric Association. In addition, she is bilingual in English and Vietnamese.

 


Christopher H. Lee, O.D.

Dr. Christopher H. Lee is a graduate of the UAB School of Optometry. Following graduation, Dr. Lee completed the Geriatric and Low Vision Rehabilitative Optometry residency at the Birmingham Department of Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.

He completed further training following his residency with a fellowship in Ocular Disease and Low Vision Rehabilitation at the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital. After completion of his fellowship, he continued at the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital as a clinician and clinical instructor.

Dr. Lee’s clinical practice focuses on ocular disease, surgical co-management, primary eye care, and contact lenses.

    Abstract

    Homologs of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sir2 protein, sirtuins, promote longevity in many organisms. Studies of the sirtuin SIRT3 have so far been limited to cell culture systems. Here, we investigate the localization and function of SIRT3 in vivo. We show that endogenous mouse SIRT3 is a soluble mitochondrial protein. To address the function and relevance of SIRT3 in the regulation of energy metabolism, we generated and phenotypically characterized SIRT3 knockout mice. SIRT3-deficient animals exhibit striking mitochondrial protein hyperacetylation, suggesting that SIRT3 is a major mitochondrial deacetylase. In contrast, no mitochondrial hyperacetylation was detectable in mice lacking the two other mitochondrial sirtuins, SIRT4 and SIRT5. Surprisingly, despite this biochemical phenotype, SIRT3-deficient mice are metabolically unremarkable under basal conditions and show normal adaptive thermogenesis, a process previously suggested to involve SIRT3. Overall, our results extend the recent finding of lysine acetylation of mitochondrial proteins and demonstrate that SIRT3 has evolved to control reversible lysine acetylation in this organelle.

Biography

Jennifer Kim, MD, PhD, is a neurologist who specializes in neurocritical care. She says caring for patients and their families is the most rewarding part of her job. 

“I love being able to help treat the sickest neurologically injured patients and to do my best to help them towards recovery,” says Dr. Kim, who treats numerous conditions, including traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain hemorrhage, hemorrhagic stroke, status epilepticus, and ischemic stroke. 

“Brain injuries are often very sudden and leave both patients and families having to grapple very quickly with an altered level of function and even awareness,” she says. “I value helping these patients, their families and doing research so that we can continuously strive to improve our care of future patients.”

Biography

Jennifer Kim, MD, PhD, is a neurologist who specializes in neurocritical care. She says caring for patients and their families is the most rewarding part of her job. 

“I love being able to help treat the sickest neurologically injured patients and to do my best to help them towards recovery,” says Dr. Kim, who treats numerous conditions, including traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain hemorrhage, hemorrhagic stroke, status epilepticus, and ischemic stroke. 

“Brain injuries are often very sudden and leave both patients and families having to grapple very quickly with an altered level of function and even awareness,” she says. “I value helping these patients, their families and doing research so that we can continuously strive to improve our care of future patients.”

Dr. Kim has been practicing for over 8 years and throughout this time, she appreciates the privilege to take care of her patients. Whether her patients come in for a sick visit or a well child check-up, she aspires to provide care in a kind, gentle, compassionate, and knowledgeable manner.

Experienced with treating children of all ages, Dr. Kim received her medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed her residency at Children’s Hospital of Orange County and the University of Nevada.

Outside of work, Dr. Kim enjoys spending time with her family which includes her son who was born at Hoag.
