I have a chance to pick up a NAPA model 791-6420 floor jack (http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=NLE&PartNumber=7916420&Description=Floor+Jack) that was returned to the my local store for a significant discount. I found out last night that my old jack won't lift my OTM (http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=275498) high enough to get jackstands under it, so I need to pick up a new one.

This is a 3.5 ton unit, which is WAY overkill for my fleet, but I wouldn't mind having a little extra capacity for my O-OTM (http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=274167).

Looks decent, weighs 110 lbs, which is good for a garage jack. If you can get a good discount go for it. Why was it returned?

Why was it returned?Apparently the hydraulics puked their guts out all over the guy's garage and they sent it in on a warranty claim. The "factory" repaired it and sent it back. The rubber pad is a little banged up and you can tell it's not new, but I don't really care about those things.

That's not a good sign. Does the repaired jack carry the original warranty?

I'm finding that it's tough to find a good jack nowadays. I did some brief research online this afternoon, and everybody seems to have trouble with whatever jack they buy. Even on Sears' web site, most of the Craftsman jacks have poor reviews.

I have a feeling that whatever service center they sent the jack to has better QC than the factory it came out of in China. Mechanically, I'm sure it's better-than-new. And yes, it would have the warranty.

They don't make 'em like they used to. I have 2 Heine-Warner floor jacks that are over 35 years old and both work perfectly. Maybe you should look for an older used American made jack.

OK - my car is an '86 Tercel 4WD Wagon, but I am quite a lurker here - you guys post some great information about tools and general wrenching tips...I purloined the ToolTalkTopic idea for our site*, but you fellows are more pecunious than us humble Terc-folk - and seemingly garage-laden.

Believe it or not, I've been using a 3-ton, quite basic, "Asian-made" Husky floor jack for over two years with absolutely no problems - and believe me, it has seen a LOT of use. The Terc is a tank compared to your cars - almost 2500 pounds.
And - it was on sale for $35 - as a combo deal with two generic jackstands! Home Depot still carries it, so I presume it is the same unit, but it ain't $35!

I couldn't lug around something that big/heavy. I've got four different floor jacks accumulated over the years and as much as I hate to say it, the Chinese all aluminum from Pep Boys ($59 on sale) has held up better than any of them and has become my go to jack. The Sears one has blow the seal on the hydraulic arm twice now. I'm going to see if I can't rig up a different hydraulic cylinder to it. Not that I ever would get under a car on just the jack, the poor quality of many of them these days makes that an absolute, never violate, rule.

Floor jack have wheels so no lugging is neccessary. The jack needed to lift a 4x4 pick-up should not be a lightweight.

I have two old Walkers that still work fine. A friend has an old Hein Werner that needed rebuilding. Parts for it are still available. We disassembled it and determined what it needed $100+ in parts. At that point you ask yourself whether to fix the old one or buy a cheap replacement. While I would rather have the money tied up in the old Hein Werner workhorse, most hobbyists/enthusiasts, especially if they can't rebuild the unit themselves, are going to opt for a Chinese jack.

Unfortunately, since so many companies out source or re-label their products now days; a product that was great many years ago, may not be today. I researched finding a good jack about a year or so ago, and the following seemed to be well regarded by the pros.

Milwaukee Hydraulics: Possibly the best out there (sourced & made in the USA) http://www.milwaukeejack.com/

Hein-Werner: Basically US made Lincoln jacks. Lincoln is now Chinese owned.

NAPA jacks are as good as any out there. I know the buyer, who visits the factories a couple times a year to ensure they stay up on the quality. Parts are readily available, and these jacks can be rebuilt by any reputable hydraulic shop. The jack that the OP is talking about is a direct replacement for the Lincoln 91-642, which was the best jack on the market (until Lincoln moved their production to China).

NAPA takes their professional line of lifting equipment seriously, as the customers who buy their shop equipment account for about 70% of their business. Offending these customers isn't good for business.

Thanks for all the feedback. I ended up passing on the jack because I managed to get the car up high enough with my old one by using some blocking material. I'll spend the money on some other specialty tools that I've been wanting instead.
