Ceramic heat cell

A ceramic heat cell, also known as Caloric Porous Structure Cell (CPSC), is a ceramic device to burn a fuel without flame, converting the thermal energy to mechanical work. In principle any fuel that can be vapourised and pre-mixed with air can be used. "Ultra vaporized steam" replaces the exploding air/fuel mixture as the work medium.[1] The flameless combustion keeps emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxides extremely low. Exhaust gas can be recirculated, which further reduces emissions.[1]

A ceramic heat cell made by German firm Enginion is claimed to generate up to 30 megawatts of power per cubic meter, operating at a moderate temperature of 1200 °C, with output varying from 5% to 100% of this, responding in 5 milliseconds. Emissions are claimed to be well below 10 parts per million even without exhaust gas recirculation. A glow plug is used to start the cell.[1]

Single is annoying to design for because heat never propagates evenly for no apparent reason. It isn’t even consistenly uneven: if I run the same symmetrical design to equilibrium and allow it to cool, there will be different hot spots when I put a cell back in.

My current build has more heat on the right, with the right side hotter on top and the left hotter on the bottom. If I let it cool off it’ll switch around. Also, how are you getting heat out of that cell? I thought isolations didn’t pass heat.

The exchangers pull heat from adjacent components it’ll pull heat out of anything even offices.

Yeah, but isolations don’t accumulate heat. Unrelated but right now I have a bunch of useless space in the middle of my design, separating the left and right sides of the heat output. If I fill it with exchangers the weird directionality of heat propagation gets even worse, making the hot places hotter instead of evening it out.

so guys, i just unlocked heat inlet and outlet and made a mirror setup of everything on my island, but noticed REALLY big difference in heat exchange… any explanation? edit: if someone doesn’t know, heat inlet should distribute heat evenly to every outlet. numbers are “water available”/“water max” in generators ![](http://i.imgur.com/7OzsZkR.png)

Abstract

Metal electrodes with micron scale width enable the heating of less than a dozen cells in a confluent layer at predictable temperatures up to 85 °C with an accuracy of ±2 °C. Those performances were obtained by a preliminary robust temperature calibration based on –rhodamine fluorescence and by controlling the temperature map on the substrate through thermal modeling. The temperature accuracy was proved by inducing the expression of heat shock (HSP) in a few NIH-3T3 cells through a confined and precise temperature rise. Our device is therefore effective to locally induce a heat shock response with almost single-cell resolution. Furthermore, we show that cells heated at a higher temperature than the one of heat shock remain alive without producing HSP. Electrode deposition being one of the most common engineering processes, the fabrication of arrays with a simple control circuit is clearly within reach for parallel testing. This should enable the study of several key mechanisms such as cell heat shock, death or signaling. In nanomedicine, controlled release by external stimuli such as for example temperature has attracted much attention. Our device could allow fast and efficient testing of thermoactivable delivery systems.
