How to buy a car in Florida on Craigslist, the country's largest used-car lot
If you are buying or selling a used vehicle in Florida – or any of 450 geographical sites around the world, including Turkey, Tunisia and Thailand – the impact of Craigslist can't be denied.
On September 12, sellers posted more than 4,400 vehicles for sale under the "Cars & Trucks" listing on the Orlando site of Craigslist.org in one 24-hour period. A comparable number was placed in the South Florida portion of Craigslist, with listings ranging from a Bentley Arnage to "Ford Focus No Engine."
Not that long ago, selling or buying a used car meant using newspaper classified ads, checking neighborhood bulletin boards or advertising in publications like Auto Trader. Now, for plenty of Florida residents, the first thought when it comes to selling a used vehicle is: post it on Craigslist. And when buying a used vehicle, we look first to Craigslist.
And why wouldn't we? It's free to post – including photos – and free to look.
If you aren't familiar with Craigslist, some history: In 1996, San Francisco resident Craig Newmark, now 58, founded Craigslist -- a modest web site that allowed users to post free ads. Now, according to Alexa.com, a web site that ranks traffic on other web sites, Craigslist.org is the 10th most popular site in the U.S. (Google.com is first, followed by Facebook.com).
As of July, Craigslist was averaging 30 millions ads per month -- stunning since Craigslist has only 32 employees.
Florida is a Craigslist hotbed, with Alexa.com ranking Florida-related searches for Craigslist near the top of the site's activity. Exactly how many vehicles are sold on Craigslist is unknown, because the ads come and go with no real oversight or qualification – one of the real problems with Craigslist. The site relies on its users to monitor the content, and "flag" ads that are inappropriate or fradulent, but it isn't a particularly effective method.
If ever the term "buyer beware" applies to autos, it's on Craigslist. But that also applies to sellers who may try to negotiate for your vehicle, often attempting to trade you something worthless or non-existent for it, under fraudulent pretenses.
There are 18 geographical sites on Craigslist for Flordia.They range from enormous listings for orlando.craigslist.org and miami.craigslist.org, which covers Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the rest of South Florida to much smaller areas like Heartland Florida (cfl.craigslist.org), which includes Sebring and the surrounding area. (The Miami listing includes separate breakouts for Dade County, Broward County and Palm Beach County.)
Craigslist allows you to search listings on any if its sites, so it's a good idea to check listings in nearby areas.
Click on "Cars & Trucks" on any Craigslist site, and you'll be taken to a second page that allows you to select vehicles that are listed by private individuals, or dealers, or both. You will also get a quick and essentially incomplete turorial on how to spot scams.
Warning signs include, "Payment by Western Union or a money wire is requested," or the "price is unusually low." You are also warned to "not buy vehicles sight-unseen, regardless of low price. The vehicle does not exist, and any money you send will be lost. Stories about divorcees or departing servicemen needing to sell quickly at a low price are generally fraudulent. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!"
Under a separate listing on how to avoid scams in general, Craigslist has posted some "actual scams" that involved users, including: "I am selling this car because my platoon has been sent back to Afganistan and don't want it get old in my backyard. The price is low because I need to sell it before November 16th…"
Use common sense, and you'll find Craigslist a good outlet for buying or selling, as well as for researching prices and looking for marketing price trends. But never forget that a used car is a used car, regardless of where you find it.
