Star Wars: The Acolyte: 5 Things We Know About The New Disney+ Series (& 5 Theories, According To Reddit)
Out of all the recently announced Star Wars series coming to Disney+, Star Wars: The Acolyte is perhaps the most mysterious and the most intriguing. Unlike any recent series or movies, it will focus on a time period in the Star Wars franchise that has never been featured in a live-action setting and offers a lot of opportunity for unique storytelling far removed from the Skywalker saga andThe Mandalorian.
RELATED: The Mandalorian: 5 Characters We Want To See In Season 3 (& 5 That Should Stay Away)
The Acolyte refers to a term sometimes used for Sith apprentices, giving fans a clue as to the focus of the series. This will provide a chance for completely unknown characters to command the spotlight, possibly centered for the first time on individuals that follow the dark side of the Force. As usual, Reddit is abuzz with rumors about one of the most highly anticipated series to come.
10 Know: It Will Focus On The Dark Side Of The High Republic
Lucasfilm has already shared that the series will focus on the emergence of "dark side powers" in the waning days of the High Republic, approximately 100-200 years before the infamous Skywalker saga takes place.
The High Republic was a time of prosperity for the Jedi Knights, who peacefully protected the galaxy 800 years after the fall of the Old Republic, during with the Republic engaged in battles with the formidable Sith Empire.
9 Theory: It Could Focus On Sith Lore
Given that the High Republic era was the time period when the Galactic Republic was at the height of its power, and Jedi were patrolling the galaxy in full force, the Sith were not considered an immediate threat as no Jedi knew of their whereabouts or existence.
RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Forgotten Sith Lords Who Could Play A Role In Disney's Upcoming Projects
That doesn't mean, however, as Reddit user LifeByTheSword suggests, that Sith lore couldn't be explored, especially the Rule of Two, as well as Sith worlds and Sith characters featured in other Star Wars paraphernalia.
8 Know: It Will Be Connected To The High Republic Comics
Disney has conveyed that the High Republic era will be brought to fans in a multi-media format, through series, comics, and novels, by which they will be able to form a homogeneous concept of the peak of Jedi prowess and influence in the galaxy.
Whereas the High Republic multi-media project will focus on the high point of the Jedi Order, The Acolyte will focus on its low point and waning years, paving the way for the nefarious plot developments in George Lucas's Prequel Trilogy.
7 Theory: It Could Feature Young Yoda
Given the time period of the series, not many Jedi from the Prequel Trilogy could be present, except for a certain long-lived Jedi Master; Yoda. Many fans have speculated that Yoda will make an appearance in the series, perhaps as an even sprier version of himself
Presenting Yoda in the series would ensure it tied in nicely to other aspects of not only the Skywalker saga, but the greater Star Wars franchise at large, such as Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures, and any other series that focused on the Jedi in Yoda's 900-year life span.
6 Know: It Will Feature A Female Protagonist
Leslye Headland has confirmed that the series will be "female-centric" and feature a female protagonist, but not deride or obfuscate male characters. She has said that as a woman, she's always associated with male characters she's invested in, but thinks the same can apply to a female lead and male fans.
RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Characters Who Need To Resurface In The Ahsoka Tano Disney+ Show
Only two of the nine Star Wars series announced by Disney+ will have a female protagonist; The Acolyte and Star Wars: Ahsoka. The addition of female Sith would be welcomed by fans of Asajj Ventress and various Inquisitor characters.
5 Theory: It Could Feature Darth Plagueis
Many Star Wars fans have been curious about Darth Plagueis the Wise ever since his pupil, Darth Sidious opined about his dark side abilities to an impressionable Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Several Reddit topics have been made pondering whether or not Plagueis will be seen in Acolyte, and if he'll train a new apprentice.
Given the series will feature a female protagonist it's difficult to say if there will be a place for Plagueis, but given the time period, it's possible he could train a female Sith apprentice prior to Palpatine (who may or may not even be born). If he's not seen then perhaps he'll be mentioned in passing to tie the series to the Prequel Trilogy.
4 Know: It Will Be Written By The Writer Of Russian Doll
Lesyle Headland, co-creator of the popular Russian Doll series on Netflix will spearhead The Acolyte, which she hopes will explore "new pockets of the universe" and introduce Star Wars fans to corners of the galaxy that they've otherwise never encountered in a live-action series before.
She also promises to incorporate plenty of "martial arts action", and if her writing for Russian Dollis any indication, it could also feature an irreverent, dark, and sophisticated humor as well.
3 Theory: It Could Be From The Sith POV
Most stories in the Star Wars canon have been from the perspective of the heroes, an unfortunate imbalance considering the franchise boasts some of the best villains in cinema history. Even The Mandalorian isn't focused on the chronicles of a purely evil bounty hunter, but instead the adventures of a stoic anti-hero.
Many fans have been hungry for a series to be shown completely from the point of view of the Sith, and as Reddit user LordofMoonsSpawn points out, there's enough fan interest in a series that doesn't have anything to do with the viewpoint of Jedi.
2 Know: Rayne Roberts Will Co-Create And Executive Produce
Joining Leslye Headland as co-creator and executive producer will be Rayne Roberts, who unlike Headland has a great deal of experience with the Star Wars brand as the current Vice President of Film Development at Lucasfilm.
RELATED: Star Wars: 5 Reasons To Be Excited For Andor (& 5 For The Acolyte)
She's been involved in all of the Star Wars projects since Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2014, including the Sequel Trilogy, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Star Wars Rebels. Along with The Acolyte, Rayne is going to still be developing further Star Wars movies for Disney, though their release date is not set.
1 Theory: It Could Show Mandalorians
Given the time period of the series, it could choose to showcase some of the Mandalorians scattered as pirates and warlords across the galaxy. Before the Purge of Mandalore by the Empire as detailed in The Mandalorian, their way of life would be much different (though their armor would be similar).
Reddit user Metallicuck posits that it would be possible to see interactions between Sith and Mandalorians, especially given both groups' aversion to Jedi. Dealings between them were highlighted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, but thus far never in a live-action setting.

What is Reddit?
If you spend a lot of time online, chances are you’ve heard of Reddit. The site bills itself as the “front page of the internet,” and that’s not an empty boast: As of this writing, Reddit is the seventh most popular site in the U.S., according to Alexa, and the 19th worldwide. So, what exactly is Reddit? Essentially, it’s a massive collection of forums where people can share news and content or comment on other people’s posts. Here’s everything you need to know.
The jargon and design of Reddit
Reddit is broken up into more than a million communities known as “subreddits,” each of which covers a different topic. The name of a subreddit begins with “r/,” which is part of the URL that Reddit uses. For example, r/nba is a subreddit where people talk about the National Basketball Association, while r/boardgames is a subreddit for people to discuss board games. Those are straightforward subreddits, but they can get weird, such as r/birdswitharms, a subreddit devoted to pictures of birds…with arms.
If you’re just looking at Reddit for the first time, you may be a bit confused by what you are seeing, so here’s a quick rundown. The homepage (or “front page”) shows you various posts that are currently trending on the site, pulled from a variety of subreddits. You can sort these posts by clicking one of the icons on the ribbon menu located underneath the Create Post text box (if you’re logged in with a Reddit account) or under a smaller header called Popular Posts, if you’re not logged in. These icons will sort the posts by Best, Hot, New, Top, or Rising if you’re logged in. Or it will sort them by your chosen location(s) (instead of Best) along with Hot, New, Top, or Rising, if you’re not logged in.
There is a search bar near the top that you can use to find posts and subreddits related to a particular term. A search for “World Cup” for example, turns up some popular posts about the World Cup and relevant subreddits such as r/worldcup and r/sports.
You can only create a subreddit for a topic if you meet specific criteria. Namely, you have to have a Reddit account, your account must be at least 30 days old, and your account must be relatively active and have earned a minimum number of “karma” points as a result of that activity. The exact required number of karma points isn’t necessarily high, but the number is known only to Reddit.
Subreddits are managed by moderators (“mods,” for short), volunteers who can edit the appearance of a particular subreddit, dictate what types of content are allowed in the sub, and even remove posts or content or ban users from the subreddit. Reddit as a whole is governed by the admins, employees of Reddit who have vast powers across the site, including the ability to strip moderators of their privileges, and even ban entire subreddits from the site.
Next to a post, you’ll likely see up and down arrows, as well as a number. Users click the arrows to upvote or downvote posts, increasing or decreasing their visibility, and the number reflects the current sum of upvotes and downvotes. Reddit users can also upvote and downvote other users’ comments, and every account has a karma number tied to it, which indicates how much karma their comments have received in total. Karma doesn’t get you hip Reddit swag or anything like that, but it does help to boost your standing in the Reddit community. Be proud of your karma!
Like most online communities, Reddit has its own language. Redditors tend to talk in abbreviations such as OP, TIL, IAmA, and AMA. OP just refers to the “original poster” in a thread, while TIL means “today I learned” and is one of the most common abbreviations you’ll see. Many posts are simple TIL observations and realizations. Both IAmA and AMA refer to what might very well be Reddit’s most popular feature: The Ask Me Anything thread. In an AMA, a well-known person such as Barack Obama or Nick Offerman, or someone who’s had a unique life experience (or a harrowing one, such as the woman who was mauled by a bear, fought it off, and drove four miles down a mountain with her face hanging off), submits themself to the inquisitive minds of Reddit. The resulting threads are some of the most insightful, humorous, and fascinating interviews you’ll ever read.
Hey, everyone: I'll be taking your questions online today. Ask yours here: http://t.co/pcwZHo3O -bo
— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) August 29, 2012
Users can give awards to other users to recognize and highlight posts the giver really enjoyed. Giving an award costs Reddit Coins, which you can buy as a way of supporting the community.
Another way to support the community is by purchasing Reddit Premium, the site’s membership program. For $6 a month, Premium users don’t see ads and it gives you access to r/lounge, a super-secret subreddit where the brightest minds on Reddit assemble to engage in witty banter (or something), along with other benefits. Premium membership also comes with a regular supply of Coins to spend on Awards. You don’t need to buy Reddit Premium to have fun on Reddit, but it’s a way to support the site, get some perks, and be invested in the community.
Just remember, Reddit is a group of people meeting on the internet, sharing stuff, and talking to one another. That’s it. Act as you would if you were hanging out with old friends or new ones. Be mindful of your language and where you post (some subreddits are unfriendly to off-topic posts). Reddit has become a popular hub for many topics, both good, bad, and niche. And the community has also taken steps to make the site more inclusive by eliminating explicit content from its public homepage.
If Reddit sounds like your kind of place, you can sign up by clicking on the blue Sign Up button in the top right corner of the main Reddit page. Then, follow the on-screen prompts to create an account. Reddit doesn’t limit you to just one account, either. You can set up multiple usernames and choose which one to log in with, depending on which subreddits you plan to participate in. Some subs encourage personally revealing posts, for example, and you may find it useful to have one persona there and another one in a sports subreddit. Some people create throwaway accounts when asking for relationship or professional advice, among other topics.
After signing in, Reddit will offer you recommendations on finding popular boards that may match your interests. If you currently have a particular community in mind that you want to join, go ahead and enter its name in the search field. Alternatively, you can hunt for applicable words and investigate that way.
When you encounter a subreddit you want to revisit, you have the opportunity to subscribe to it. Your homepage will show posts from your subscribed subreddits. You can look at all your subscriptions in the navigation bar’s drop-down menu; this lets you switch between communities easily. You can also link comparable subreddits into customized feeds—for instance, you may organize r/nba, r/nbadiscussion, and other team subreddits into a basketball multireddit. If you want to do this, just head to the proper subreddit and click the Three Dots symbol next to About Community. From here, you’ll see a menu pop-up where you will need to select Add to Custom Feed. After this, follow the prompts to add the subreddit to an existing feed or make a brand new one. You can even decide to make your multireddit public so other Redditors can become a subscriber.
You can join as many subreddits as you want, and the ample amount of topics assures your continued interest. Maybe Reddit’s most engaging feature is that you can be as incognito or otherwise socially low-key as you desire. With all these cool features, it’s not surprising that it interests so many subscribers.

I was a big fan of Apple’s AirPods when they first launched, but I have to say grew tired of them fairly quickly. The concept is terrific, of course, and they were certainly among the best true wireless earbuds on the market when they first hit store shelves. But the smooth plastic tips don’t isolate sound so all the bass leaks out of your ears. That’s fine if you’re a runner or if you commute in a city and need to hear what’s going on around you. Personally, I want silicone tips so I can enjoy the best possible sound quality. I switched to the Master & Dynamic MW07 true wireless earbuds and never looked back, and I continued to use them until recently when I got the new and improved MW07 Plus model. They’re so good that I didn’t even care when Apple released its new AirPods Pro model, which features silicone tips and new noise cancelling technology.
The new AirPods Pro earphones look great, but I personally didn’t even bother to try them at first. Why not? Well, I poked around a few reviews out there and I really didn’t find anything worthwhile. The reviews I skimmed seemed like they were written by tech bloggers who had never even tried another pair of noise cancelling earphones. They gushed over capabilities that are beyond basic, and they didn’t do anything to convince me that Apple had made any great strides where sound quality is concerned. Since the reviews I found were so poorly written, I just closed them and didn’t even bother investigating any further. If you’re in the same boat, however, I finally ended up stumbling upon a review that’s actually worthwhile, but it wasn’t published by any tech blog or news site. Instead, it’s just a random guy on Reddit who seems to know a lot more about reviewing headphones than any of the gadget bloggers I found.
Don't Miss:Amazon's epic Black Friday deals started early this year and you won't believe how good they are!
The Redditor in question goes by the name “frumpy_cat” and he doesn’t appear to be an expert in headphones or in consumer electronics in general. Instead, he’s a regular user who actually took the time to compare Apple’s new AirPods Pro to leading rivals that he has actually tried. Whereas many reviews from tech bloggers seem to come from people who have never tried any leading rivals, comparing AirPods Pro to similar models is actually the best way to review them since sound quality is obviously objective.
In his post on Reddit, the user compares the AirPods Pro to Apple’s Powerbeats Pro and to the Sony WF-1000XM3 earphones, which are widely regarded as the best true wireless earbuds that support noise cancellation. He also threw in Sony’s over-ear noise cancelling headphones just for the fun of it, since everyone knows the WH-1000XM3 are the best in the business. For each different category, he gives each pair of headphones a score from 1 to 10 and then offers a quick blurb with some overall thoughts.
If you’re in the market for new noise cancelling earphones and you’re considering the new $250 AirPods Pro over Sony’s industry-leading option at $230, definitely read through this review before you pull the trigger. I ended up trying out AirPods Pro for myself, and I think this Redditor is right on the money with most of his takes.

Disney+ to Surpass Netflix in 2025, Hit 284M Subscribers in 2026, Analyst Forecasts
While The Walt Disney Co.’s Disney+ streaming service may have hit a speed bump as of late, it will reach more subscribers than Netflix by 2025, according to an analyst’s latest forecast.
Research firm Digital TV Research shared the prediction in a report, projecting that the number of subscribers to Disney+ would reach 284.2 million in 2026, down from a 294.0 million estimate the firm had made earlier in the year. In 2026, Netflix will` have 270.7 million subscribers, down from an earlier estimate of 286.0 million. In a February report, the firm had forecast that Disney+’s user base would surpass Netflix’s in 2026.
“Three platforms will control nearly half the world’s SVOD subscriptions by 2026,” according to Digital TV Research. “Disney+ will be the biggest winner, overtaking Netflix in 2025. Disney+ will add 140 million subscribers between 2021 and 2026 to bring its total to 284 million. About 121 million of Disney+’ subscribers (43 percent of its total) in 2026 will be in the 13 Asian countries under the Hotstar brand.”
Netflix, which Wall Street analysts have lauded for hit content from outside the U.S., such as South Korean original series Squid Game, will add 53 million customers by 2026, “revealing growth even for the most established platform,” and Amazon Prime will hit 243.4 million users, the research firm predicts.
Behind that, it estimates that China’s Tencent will end 2026 with 98.7 million users, China’s iQiyi with 76.8 million and HBO with 76.3 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Apple TV+ will record 35.6 million users then.
Overall, global SVOD subscriptions will increase by 491 million between 2021 and 2026 to reach 1.64 billion, Digital TV Research now projects. China and the U.S. will account for 49 percent of the global total then, down from 56 percent in 2021.
“China and the U.S. had a similar number of subscriptions by end-2020,” said Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research. “Due to government pressure, China’s growth is decelerating, with 354 million subscriptions expected by 2026. The U.S. will continue to grow, with 450 million subscriptions expected by 2026.”

Disney Plus review: Great for families, but still behind on original content
Disney Plus has been out in the wild for US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealanders, and Netherlands residents since late November 2019. In late March 2020, it finally expanded to India and other European countries and has since expanded to other parts of Europe and Latin America. As a result, Disney Plus now has over 100 million subscribers. However, is the service still worth the $7.99 a month price? Our Disney Plus review will give you our answer, based on using the service since its launch date.

Disney Plus Review: Content
If you are not a Disney fan, Disney Plus is not going to be your cup of tea. However, if you are, there’s a ton of content to dive into. Yes, that includes the very first Mickey Mouse short film, Steamboat Willie, which was released way back in 1928. In between, you can stream tons of classic and current Disney animated feature films and shorts, live-action films, and shows. Most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are available. All of the Star Wars and Pixar movies can be streamed. If you love documentaries, there’s also a host of National Geographic movies and series to stream as well.
One thing we will mention is that there are a few movies and TV shows from the former 20th Century Fox on Disney Plus. That’s due to Disney buying the library of TV shows and movies from that studio in 2018. You can stream the entire library of episodes from The Simpsons, for instance. It also has a few family-friendly movies from Fox, like The Sound of Music and Avatar. More recently, you can stream many of the X-Men and Fantastic Four Marvel movies from Fox that are not a part of the MCU lineup.
One criticism of Disney Plus at this stage is there is not enough content that will appeal to a more mature audience. We know that’s part of the design of Disney Plus, but we think there’s some wiggle room to add more movies and shows for older audiences, particularly from the Fox library.
If you live in places outside the US, that is no longer a problem. Internationally, the Star brand-section is now available on Disney Plus. It includes more mature TV shows and content from both Disney and its Twentieth Century Fox library of titles, plus new content as well.

Original content, or lack thereof
We knew going in that the exclusive new content on Disney Plus was going to be sparse at first. Most of the exclusive shows and movies at launch, like Noelle and the Lady and the Tramp remake, were geared mostly for a younger audience. Disney Plus does have quite a few original reality shows that might appeal to that audience. Our favorite is Encore, which reunites high school musical students as adults. Only the Star Wars series The Mandalorian targets an older demographic.
Since the COVID-19 outbreak shut down movie theaters in 2020, Disney decided to move a few of their films that were supposed to be released in theaters to Disney Plus. That includes the filmed stage version of Hamilton, along with Artemis Fowl, The One and Only Ivan, and the live action version of Mulan. Soul, another Pixar movie due for theatrical release, was added to Disney Plus in December 2020. In March 2021, Raya and the Last Dragon was added to Disney Plus.
Even though movie theaters are opening up in the US, Disney will continue to add new theatrical movies to its streaming service this summer. It launched Cruella on Disney Plus for an extra $30 fee in late May on the same date it was released to theaters. It will do the same for two July movie releases, Marvel Studios’ Black Widow and Jungle Cruise. It will also launch the latest Pixar animated movie, Luca, on June 18, without an extra fee.
The good news is we will be seeing more new content coming to the service over the next year. That includes lots of all-new MCU TV shows and Star Wars content, including lots of new Marvel Cinematic Universe shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Loki. Other original shows like The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Big Shots and more are being added.
The UI of Disney Plus is very clean, with colorful images serving as menu and content selections for the smart TV and web-based apps. We like the fact that the search page also includes “collections” of various Disney Plus content. Hopefully, these will be useful for subscribers who want to dive into, say, all the Toy Story content on the service immediately. You can also just click on top to check out all of the movies and shows at once.
The Android mobile app has a similar UI, with a couple of differences. One is that you can download movies and shows to your device. There’s an icon at the bottom that shows which Disney Plus content you have downloaded. You can change the download video quality settings to standard, medium, or high. Obviously, the higher the quality, the more storage space it will take up on your device. Of course, you can set up your own profile, with a ton of great icons available to choose from the vast Disney library of characters. Up to five different profiles can be set up for one account.
Other positive Disney Plus features
We love the fact that there is a wide variety of platforms available for Disney Plus. That includes game consoles like the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 (although, sadly, not the Nintendo Switch). We also like that you can stream on up to four concurrent devices at once.
We like that Disney Plus supports 4K resolution and HDR for a number of its movies and shows. That includes its Marvel movies and all of the Star Wars films. We also like that the service has a variety of audio and subtitles for its content. You will need download speeds of at least 25Mbps for 4K content and 5Mbps for 1080p streaming.
Recently, Disney Plus has added a couple of new features. One is called GroupWatch, which allows up to 7 people to watch the same movie or TV show on the service at the same time remotely. The other allows mobile users to send links to others, via social media or text messages, to show which movie or series they are watching.
Things Disney Plus still needs to work on
Perhaps the biggest issue we have had with Disney Plus are its parental controls. Previously, the service lacked many of those features, but in 2021 it was updated with some more secure parental controls. You can make a Kid’s Profile on your account which restricts the content on the service down to those appropriate for children that are seven years old or younger. Profiles can also be secured by a PIN number. You can also now restrict content on profiles not made for kids based on ratings.
However, there are not currently any time control issues, nor is there a way to ban specific shows and movies. It’s possible Disney Plus will add these features over the next few months, but for now, you will definitely need to be more proactive if you have younger kids in your household.
The lack of original content on Disney Plus has been mentioned already. Despite improvements in that area, the amount of original content still lags well behind other established services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.
Disney Plus review: Is it worth it?
Overall, our Disney Plus review is positive. If you are the audience for this kind of content, we think it will be well worth your $7.99 a month. Of course, there are ways to also get Disney Plus for free. We want to see more original content added to the service. Our biggest gripe is the lack of original content, but even that is getting better each month.

Loki’s first two episodes are a blast
When Loki is first captured by an organization devoted to maintaining the purity of the timestream, it’s a bit like a trip to the DMV.
His time at the TVA — otherwise known as the Time Variance Authority — includes taking a number to wait in line, walking through a metal detector-like security device, and verifying some paperwork. But there are some differences compared to getting your license renewed. Failing to queue up properly at the TVA can result in death. And that paperwork? It’s a massive stack consisting of literally everything Loki has ever said (including the two confused words he utters while standing in the office). It’s extremely funny to watch an all-powerful deity be forced through a confusing bureaucracy — and it’s the perfect way to start off the new Loki series on Disney Plus.
This review contains light spoilers for the first two episodes of Loki.
While Loki has been part of the MCU for a decade, his role has been somewhat scattershot: a handful of memorable appearances spread across six films. Loki, a six-episode series on Disney Plus, is his first chance at a starring role. The show follows the character, once again played by Tom Hiddleston, after he stole a magical doodad called a Tesseract in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Almost immediately, he’s captured by the TVA and accused of being a “variant” that has disrupted the timeline. He’s given a choice: be destroyed or partner with TVA agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) to help track down another fugitive variant who has been killing agents across various time periods. Naturally, Loki chooses the option where he doesn’t die.
Like other bureaucratic entities from movies like Men in Black or Hellboy, the TVA is the kind of organization that exists in the margins, unknown to almost everyone. Its objective is an important one: to maintain a timeline created by three beings known as the Time Keepers in order to prevent anomalies that will create new potentially dangerous timestreams. But they also operate like a straight-laced government department. There are rules and procedures to follow. Men and women sit behind desks oblivious to the outside world, as they appear to exist outside of time and space. (At one point, Loki threatens to gut an office worker like a fish; unfortunately, the desk jockey has no idea what a fish is.) Even magic doesn’t work within the confines of the TVA.
The result is a wonderfully absurd contrast between the mundane and the fantastical. Loki is completely out of place in this world, where his powers are useless and he has no idea what’s going on, making it impossible to truly plot ahead. At first, he’s his old arrogant self. When a judge asks whether he pleads innocent or guilty to being a variant, Loki says simply that gods don’t plead. But eventually, he comes to realize that he can’t fight the TVA, at least until he learns enough about them to come up with a scheme. There are some great slapstick moments, like when Loki is outfitted with a collar that lets a TVA guard send him back in time; every time Loki hops out of a chair for a sneak attack, he’s zapped back into his seat. Later, he fails to get a librarian’s attention until he rings a bell just right. These moments drive home just how out of place Loki is — and how in many ways he’s really justanother cog in a big cosmic machine.
The relationship between Loki and Mobius is one of the most important parts of the show. It almost has a buddy comedy dynamic. The two clearly don’t trust each other, but they form a sort of uneasy alliance. At one point, when Loki tries to convince Mobius to follow one of his hunches, the TVA agent seems to think he’s being led into a trap. To assuage his fears, Loki tells him: “Trust one thing — I love to be right.” The chemistry between Wilson and Hiddleston is great, with the pair able to seamlessly transition from throwing barbs to contemplating serious revelations. Mobius has spent a long time studying Loki, and he’s both unfazed and impressed by him. Early on, he shows Loki pivotal scenes from his life, asking questions like “Do you like to hurt people?” Eventually, Loki breaks down and starts to worry that he’s a villain. “That’s not how I see it,” Mobius tells him. It’s a touching moment that further complicates an already complicated character, as you can never really tell what side Loki’s on (aside from his own).
Loki also has a vibe that — at least early on — feels unlike anything else in the MCU. The TVA has a retro-futuristic quality, with computers and interior designs that look ripped from the 1970s. The agency even has a cute little watch mascot, which also appears to be sentient, sort of like a holographic Siri mashed with the Kool-Aid Man. It’s both surreal and grounded, like something Douglas Adams would dream up. And as opposed to the more typical action-oriented Marvel stories, Loki plays out a bit like a police procedural, as Loki and Mobius attempt to figure out just who the fugitive variant is. Without his superpowers, Loki is forced to spend hours at a desk, flipping through files in hopes of finding a clue, before venturing out into the field to investigate. He quickly goes from god to amateur detective. The time travel premise also means that the show is able to jump around a lot, with visits to everywhere from Pompeii to a futuristic big box store.
Much like WandaVision, Loki is evidence that there’s a lot of room to experiment within the tight confines of the MCU. It blends elements of buddy comedies and police procedurals with a hefty dose of classic sci-fi, helped along by an incredibly charming cast. It’s also a story that seems ideally suited for episodic storytelling, with the space to dig deeper into a character that’s often stuck on the periphery of larger moments. In its first two episodes, Loki nails the formula — now we just have to see if that momentum keeps up for the next few weeks.
