Sony has been saying the PlayStation 5 will deliver “the future of gaming,” promising that features like its lightning-fast SSD and DualSense controller will enable new gaming experiences that we can’t even conceive of yet. That may or may not end up being true. But after watching the PS5 teardown video that Sony posted Wednesday morning, I don’t care about any of that stuff anymore — because now, my mind is consumed with thoughts of the PS5’s brilliant stand.
Twenty years ago, with the PlayStation 2, Sony pioneered the concept of a gaming console that could sit in the traditional horizontal orientation or stand vertically. Back then, though, Sony recommended that people who wanted to stand up their PS2s buy a vertical stand, an official accessory that the company sold separately for $14.99. (Sony also manufactured a horizontal stand for the PS2 that was designed solely to ... look cool, I guess? I feel bad for anybody who got suckered into buying that thing.)
In addition, Sony produced a first-party vertical stand for the PlayStation 4, but not for the launch model of the PlayStation 3, which was wide enough to have a comfortably large footprint in its vertical orientation (and, at 11 pounds, sturdy enough that knocking it over would take some effort).
If you want to stand up the PS5, it has a fairly narrow base in that orientation, and if you want to lay it down on its side, well, both of the console’s side panels are curved. As such, Sony is including a stand in the box with the standard PS5 as well as the discless Digital Edition. It’s a single unit that functions as both a vertical stand and a horizontal stand — but that’s just where its ingenious design begins.
The PS5 stand is a disc-shaped unit with a clawlike protrusion. When you want to stand up the console, you use a single flathead screw to secure the stand to the bottom of the unit; the claws fit nicely into a recessed area on the back of the console. When you want to lay the console down horizontally, you remove the stand from the bottom of the PS5, and simply use the claws to clip it onto the back. The claws rest right by the two USB 3.0 slots in the console’s rear port array, with the stand itself sitting beneath the system to, y’know, hold it up.
An astute observer might realize that this design presents a problem: namely, what to do with the screw, since it’s not used when the stand is holding up a horizontal PS5. Well, Sony figured out an elegant solution for this issue!
Sony built a special compartment for just this purpose into the underside of the stand. When you’re not using the screw, you can just snap it in there. Sony even thought of the fact that in the horizontal orientation, the screw hole would be visible on the left side of the PS5. So the chamber also holds a piece of plastic that you can use to plug the screw hole (which makes it even harder to notice the already inconspicuous hole).
And don’t worry about the screw falling out of the stand. When you want to transition from vertical to horizontal, you rotate the top of the stand to close the compartment, locking the screw inside.
I’m fascinated by all the engineering effort that clearly went into this inventive piece of the PS5 puzzle. Assuming that all of the stand’s components hold up over time, this is a smart design that provides both a functional and clever solution for the challenges created by the unique exterior shell of the PS5. The jury is out on whether the PS5 will deliver the future of gaming, but one thing seems sure already: It’s the next generation of industrial design.
New PS5 Models Replace Annoying Screw Used To Attach Stand
Over in Australia, some folks have found new PS5 models being sold in stores. But don’t get too excited. These new console revisions aren’t adding in bigger hard drives or more powerful hardware. Instead, these new revisions seem to just make a few minor changes, including replacing a single screw.
As reported by Australian-based gaming outlet Press Start, these new PS5 models were shipped over to the country last week. Apparently, Press Start believes that Australia is the first country to receive shipments of the new models. These new consoles sport a slightly changed model numbering scheme, featuring CFI-11XX. (The original launch PS5 consoles use CFI-1XXX.) These console models appear to be nearly identical. One small change is a new screw used to attach the PS5 to its stand. Before, this screw could only be tightened or loosened using a tool. Now, the small screw has been changed and you can do it all by hand. What a time to be alive.
I actually totally understand this small change. Installing the stand on my PS5 was a pain in the ass, between its odd shape and the screw being finicky to screw in. Perhaps this new and improved screw will be a small quality-of-life improvement.
It also appears that these new models, which come in both digital and disc flavors, weigh about 10 oz. or 300 gm less than the original PS5 consoles. At this time there isn’t much info out there about what is or isn’t in these consoles that can explain the difference in weight. It’s not just the new screw! Sony has been quiet about these changes and hasn’t released much public information about them.
Back in May, a new wireless communication module was registered by Sony for use in a new PS5 model. The new module replaces the J20H100 wifi module used in all launch PS5 machines. But until someone with the skills and tools gets their hands on one of these new Aussie PS5s, we can’t know for sure if this module is in there and if it that explains the weight difference.
Meanwhile, if you are still out there hunting for a PS5, good luck! Sony expects console shortages to be a problem well into next year as the pandemic and an ongoing global chip shortage make it hard for companies to produce and ship electronic devices. Don’t worry, you still don’t need a PS5. You got plenty of games in your backlog you need to finish anyway. And now that you have waited nearly a year, you get a nice new screw in your PS5. See, good things come to those who wait.

Add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console
Find out which M.2 SSDs can be used to expand your PlayStation®5 console storage space, and how to insert an M.2 SSD into the expansion slot.
What is an M.2 SSD?
M.2 SSD devices are a high-speed solid state drive medium that PS5 players can use to increase the storage capacity of their PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console (separate purchase required).
Why add an M.2 SSD to your PS5 console?
Once installed in the PS5 console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. This allows you to increase the storage space available to you on your PS5 console. You can freely move games between the PS5 console’s storage, a connected USB extended storage device and the added M.2 SSD storage.
Which M.2 SSDs can be used with a PS5 console?
It’s important that you only use a supported M.2 SSD to expand your PS5 console storage and that meets the following requirements:
Interface | PCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M) |
Storage | 250 GB - 4 TB |
Supported sizes | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110 |
Size including heat-dissipation mechanism | Width: up to 25 mm Length: 30/40/60/80/110 mm Thickness: up to 11.25 mm (up to 8.0 mm from above the board, up to 2.45 mm from below the board) |
Sequential read speed | 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended |
Socket type | Socket 3 (Key M) |
Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink and a heat transfer sheet. You can attach these to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format (single-sided cooling structures are an easier fit). There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built-in. For information on how to attach the heat dissipation mechanism, check the instructions that come with it.
- Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 SSD devices are supported.
- M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.
- You should carefully review drive specifications prior to purchase and contact the vendor or manufacturer if you need further information. SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products.
- Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.
- The majority of M.2 SSD devices with the above type numbers (M Key Type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110) and without a built-in cooling structure will fit the PS5 console’s SSD slot. However, sizes for cooling structures (like heatsinks) vary greatly. If you are not sure an M.2 SSD or cooling structure (such as a heatsink) you’re considering meets the size requirements outlined here, we recommend looking for another product option or contacting the vendor or manufacturer for more information.
If you experience problems while playing a game installed on M.2 SSD storage, move the game to the internal Ultra-High Speed console storage.
How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console
Before you begin, you’ll need:
- A well-lit room with a table to work on.
- A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
- A small flashlight (optional).
Before proceeding with the installing or removing process, touch a metal-grounded object to remove any static electricity from your body. Failure to do so may cause damage to your M.2 SSD or PS5 console.
Please note, don't power on or play on your console while the cover is off.
If it is the first time using your M.2 SSD with your PS5 console, you'll need to format your M.2 SSD after installing. When you format your M.2 SSD, any data saved on the drive is erased. Data erased this way can't be recovered, so be careful and make sure you don't erase important data.
Do not turn off the power while saving data or while your M.2 SSD is being formatted. Doing so may cause data loss, corruption, or damage to your M.2 SSD or PS5 console.
Do not use an M.2 SSD without a heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heat sink or heat transfer sheet. Your M.2 SSD might come with these parts or you might need to purchase them separately.
- Turn off your PS5 console. Then remove all cables and devices from your PS5 console.
Wait a while for your PS5 console to cool down. - Place your PS5 console on a flat surface with a protective covering and remove the base.
- Position your PS5 console so that the PS logo is facing down and the power button is facing away from you.
- Use your right hand to grip the edge of the bottom-right corner and your left hand to grip the edge of the top-left corner of the cover.
- Gently lift the cover up with your right hand.
- Slide the cover off with your left thumb while using the fingers of your left hand to stabilize your PS5 console.
The cover lifts away. There is a long rectangular cover over the expansion slot, secured with one screw at the top.
- Remove the screw from the expansion slot cover (A) and then remove the cover.
- Carefully remove the screw (B). Move the spacer (C) to the groove corresponding to the size of your M.2 SSD.
- Hold the edge of your M.2 SSD, align it with the notch on the expansion connector, and then starting from diagonally upward firmly insert it all the way in.
Ensure the M.2 SSD circuit board is resting flush on the spacer, without obstruction from your cooling structure. If you proceed to the next step while your M.2 SSD is incorrectly inserted or not firmly inserted all the way into the expansion connector, it may cause damage to the terminal and your PS5 console.
- Tilt your M.2 SSD down and fasten it to the spacer with the screw. Make sure your cooling structure is not obstructing the screw.
- Attach the expansion slot cover and fasten the screw. If the slot cover does not close properly, your cooling structure likely exceeds size requirements.
- Replace the cover by positioning it slightly away (about 2 cm or 3/4 inch) from the top edge and sliding it back into place. You’ll hear a click when the cover is secured.
- Connect the AC power cord, cables, and base, and then turn on the power.
When your PS5 console turns on, the formatting guide appears. Follow the on-screen instructions and format your M.2 SSD.
