Inside Texas’s largest furniture store
For many people, a trip to Ikea inspires a special kind of anxiety. There’s something about being herded through , square feet of inexpensive furniture that has a unique ability to inspire screaming matches, marital discord, and the occasional existential crisis. But Ikea pales in comparison to Nebraska Furniture Mart, a sprawling home decor extravaganza situated in The Colony, a short drive away from Dallas, Texas.
The Berkshire Hathaway-owned retailer occupies , square feet in the suburb, where it sells more furniture than any of the small chain’s three other stores. It’s headquartered in Omaha, but Nebraska Furniture Mart fits in perfectly in Dallas, and for good reason. The city’s real estate market is booming, thanks to the arrival of major corporate headquarters like Boeing, Jacobs Engineering, and Toyota, and an influx of coastal expats tired of paying rents in San Francisco and New York. More than , people have moved to Dallas and its surrounding suburbs since , and they’ve all got homes that need to be furnished and decorated.
Nebraska Furniture Mart sells itself as a one-stop shop of sorts for those Texas newcomers, a place where Midwestern housewives and trendy millennials alike can find the perfect couch or dining table. The store peddles a mass-market version of the American Dream, and it isn’t shy about its straight-up-the-middle appeal.
After making the mile drive to The Colony and finding a space in the gigantic parking lot, I notice the large white letters on the store’s facade: “America’s Home Furnishing Store.” Intentionally, this is a place where people of all stripes, budget limitations, and design aesthetics can converge to buy a table lamp, refrigerator, headboard, or lawnmower. The incredible number of items on offer—beginning with a wall of brightly colored KitchenAid mixers that makes for a solid selfie backdrop—is dizzying. I realize quickly that I’m going to need either benzodiazepines or caffeine to survive a shopping trip of this magnitude.
I choose the latter, because walking through half a million square feet of furniture is an endurance sport. At Scooter’s Coffee, a locally based chain stationed at the entrance, I order a Candy Bar Blender, the shop’s version of a Frappuccino. When I make my selection, the barista asks what kind of candy bar I’d like for my drink and begins listing off options—Almond Joy, peanut butter cup, Snickers, Heath bar, Butterfinger. I pick Almond Joy because it’s the first option; I should have realized that the list was an omen of bizarre and uniquely overwhelming things to come.
While stirring the chocolate drizzle into my frappe, I notice that Joanna Gaines’s wildly popular Magnolia Home line occupies major real estate near the entrance. Christmas decor, mostly festooned with pine cones and winter greenery, is a fixture of the display, which also features Gaines’s year-round decor, including woven pillows in muted neutrals ($), down-home milk bottle totes in antiqued tin ($), and a real-deal lemonade stand ($) that’s made from faux-reclaimed wood and comes with its very own “promotional crates” and a menu chalkboard. Atop one of the beds designed by Gaines, there’s even a small display wall made of pallet wood in the style of the Fixer Upper host’s beloved shiplap.
Nebraska Furniture Mart is designed from the floor up to appeal to Middle America. Alongside the value-produced furniture and Joanna Gaines’s Magnolia Home, items branded with the names of country singer and domestic goddess Trisha Yearwood and food personality Rachael Ray offer both familiarity and a tacit endorsement of the goods on offer. These are personalities who have earned the trust of the American middle class. If those plates emblazoned with a chicken are good enough for these down-to-earth, “just-like-us” celebrities, they’re probably just the thing to elevate a two-bedroom ranch house in the suburbs of Dallas.
Nebraska Furniture Mart tries, in a dramatic way, to be the best of all worlds. In addition to televisions, laptops, vacuums, hair dryers, and other gadgets, there are enough appliances inside Nebraska Furniture Mart to outfit every kitchen in America. There’s a range or dishwasher here at every price point—the store’s website confirms that 45 different types of dishwasher are currently in stock in The Colony’s warehouse—starting at just $ For swankier builds, there’s the KitchenAid with “dynamic wash arms” that sports a sleek black exterior, minimalist stainless steel bar handle, and a $1, price tag. Outdoor kitchens get their own space, complete with a $ built-in stainless steel trash can and wine chiller.
After spending a little too much time wandering through the Magnolia Home display and getting thisclose to buying a bottle-brush Christmas tree ($), I knew I needed to develop a game plan for actually seeing the rest of the store. Starting on one side of the Mart’s first floor, I planned to weave up and down the aisles one by one, vowing to avoid getting distracted by items outside of the planned left, right, then center path. That didn’t last long.
There’s a section built specifically to showcase Viking appliances, a favorite of the moneyed set, where a cheery saleswoman in a sharp royal blue top gently tried to sell me an Italian-made Viking Tuscany range that retailed for $16, It was truly dreamy, painted in cobalt enamel, topped with six cast-iron gas burners and a griddle that could be configured to my specific cooking needs, along with two different ovens, one conventional and one convection, on the bottom. According to the saleswoman, each oven was custom-built in Italy, was available in a variety of colors, and took at least two months to build. I told her I’d have to think about it.
And still, there is more. The real point of coming to Nebraska Furniture Mart is to touch, feel, and sit on the thousands of couches, chairs, love seats, benches, ottomans, headboards, mattresses, coffee tables, and dinettes that litter the store’s second floor. More upscale offerings are staged as living rooms and dens, each with its specific look. Eames knock-offs are paired with hairpin-leg coffee tables and midcentury-inspired sofas, while whitewashed headboards are paired with vases of seashells and linen bedding in an attempt at Hamptons chic. Fuzzy recliners, couches covered in everything from Naugahyde (ahem, vegan leather) to tweed, and dining tables decorated with scratched glassware offer a respite from pacing up and down the aisles, unable to decide whether a crushed velour sofa that’s the color of orange soda is quirky or tacky.
The furniture that is not arranged into those charming displays is squished into tight rows, one unremarkable recliner lined up against the next. I don’t understand how anyone comes to a decision with that many available options. How does one choose an easy chair—the easy chair—without sitting on every single chair in the store? Even those weird, puffy “entertainment recliners” made exclusively for dads that come with a cup holder, remote pocket, and built-in radio that only plays The Rush Limbaugh Show. For anyone with a diagnosed anxiety disorder or tendency toward perfectionism, Nebraska Furniture Mart is the perfect place to have a panic attack. At least there’s somewhere to lie down while curled into the fetal position.
Despite their similarities in size and offerings, Nebraska Furniture Mart is the anti-Ikea. The two stores are fewer than four miles apart in Dallas-Fort Worth, but worlds different in appeal and aesthetic. Here, Swedish minimalism is swapped for classic, contemporary, modern, cottage, farmhouse chic, traditional, anything that can be seen on HGTV. Whatever your flavor, Nebraska Furniture Mart does it—but it doesn’t do it very well.
Looking closely at each piece, it quickly becomes apparent that quality is not the priority. Finish peels up from the bottoms of table legs; an entertainment center fitted with a sliding barn door that glides to reveal hidden bookshelves makes a screeching noise that would wake the dead. Teensy splinters of wood poke out precariously from the sides of anything with unfinished drawers or doors. Even the more expensive pieces, like a china cabinet with mirrored doors priced at $, show scratches, dings, and other signs of wear—not necessarily surprising for floor models, but it’s clear that in a home full of averagely clumsy adults and children, these are pieces that won’t last long.
And maybe that’s the appeal: We all change our minds and start following new design gurus and decide that maybe we don’t actually want to live in a generic apartment that’s decorated like a whimsical barn. It’s like shopping at H&M or Forever 21 and knowing that glittery mini dress isn’t going to survive more than three trips through the spin cycle. Outside of the mattresses and top-quality appliances from well-known brands like Viking or KitchenAid, the furniture is mostly made of particle board, staples, and faux finishes. It is almost entirely disposable, and that’s the point—when farmhouse chic is over, it’s easy enough to come back and assemble an entire room with an entirely different look for about $2, (All of which, of course, can be financed on a Nebraska Furniture Mart revolving credit card, with the store charging 18 percent interest for its trouble.)
And in most cases, those quirks and scratches and dings are only visible up close. For Instagram photos and real estate showings, it doesn’t matter if the sheepskin is actually polyester or the wood veneer is actually a sticker slapped on top of medium-density fiberboard. The young, new-to-Dallas professionals upgrading from Ikea are used to wiggly legs and drawers that never seem to open quite right. Even if it isn’t great, it is certainly good enough.

While I like other millennials prefer live chat customer support over phone-based customer service (who doesn’t love hitting ####### a bunch of times just to get through to a live agent, right?), John O. may have changed my mind. Let me rewind for a moment and say that I’ve had nothing but trouble with the furniture I’ve purchased from Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) over the past six years. Even though it wasn’t always NFM’s fault and the furniture was eventually replaced, it was always a serious hassle. Needless to say, I was ready to leave NFM and never look back. That was until John O. stepped in to help with my most recent problem: a leather rocking loveseat that made an annoying whooshing sound due to leather-on-leather contact; however, I was more concerned about the friction damaging the material than about the sound.
Before calling NFM this time, I made some adjustments to the loveseat and even removed most of the stuffing from the center cushion, but to no avail. NFM ended up sending two technicians (at different times) who both said the same thing, “Just rub some talcum powder on it. There’s not much more we can do for you. It’s just a defective design.” Mind you, I spent close to $1, (including the furniture protection plan) on this loveseat and the best you’ve got is “Rub some talcum powder on it?” Really?? So I called John O. with NFM customer service. He was fantastic from the start and was in constant communication over the next several weeks as we tried to figure out a solution (and finally did). He was always courteous, patient, and empathetic, and is the SINGLE reason that I’m still a NFM customer. In other words, the guy is excellent customer service personified. THANK YOU, JOHN!!!
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, Joshua. I am sorry to hear of the issues you have experienced with us in the past with the product you have received, and thank you for your positive review for John O. I have forwarded your review to his manager for proper recognition and praise. We appreciate you choosing Nebraska Furniture Mart and look forward to helping you again.

NFM has a huge showroom and allow me to use their financial without any interest for 24 or 30 months are plus for us to do incentive to use their products. Downside is that I could not use comparison to others and not effective communication about product delivery status.
Thank you for the 4 Star Review, Matthew. Glad to hear you appreciated our Large Selections, Great Prices and Financing options. We are sorry there were limited communication about product delays. We appreciate you choosing Nebraska Furniture Mart and look forward to helping you again.
We always go to Ne. Furniture Mart. The employees are friendly, they know their merchandise too. They try and give you the best prices. When you go there, make sure you know the sizes, colors and research a little before you go there. Like model number, brands, etc. Otherwise you will be confused about which brand or type of material, etc. Take a picture of your room (measurements) of where or what you are planning to do. Good luck.
Thank you for taking the time to provide us your rating and feedback, Marvin. Glad to hear you Like our Outstanding Customer Service and even better Prices! We appreciate you choosing Nebraska Furniture Mart and look forward to helping you again.
I was let go at work. I fell behind, but started making payments again catching up. I logged in today to make a payment and my account was no longer in the NFM system. They sent me to collections. They said they tried to contact me (which they didn't) and the took my payments for the last few months w/o any issues. They told me there was nothing they could do to fix it as it went to a 3rd party.
I recently purchased flooring from NFM, and when their contracted crew showed up to install my flooring and move my appliances they damaged them and then claimed they did not. When I filed a claim with NFM they sided with the crew and left me with damage. Beware when you work with them as they will not stand with their customers when the crews they contract with do damage to your home - Beware.
Hi Richard, I apologize your appliances were damaged, I understand that's frustrating. If you would like to dispute the results of the claim, feel free to contact our Flooring Customer Service team at 1() EXT:
If you want to experience buying a low quality bed and horrible customer service, shop at NFM in Texas. Bought a bed at Nebraska Furniture Mart here in TX. It has been a complete nightmare. The bed broke within weeks. I called NFM numerous times to get a replacement, but they stopped selling the bed. I was then told to find a similar bed in the same price range. I was not able to due to so many beds being out of stock or requiring a box spring which I didn't need for the first bed. The sales people said this was a quality bedlol.
I have called and been given the runaround. I finally talked to Alex extension ** rep# ** or **. She said she was the customer service manager, she told me to pick some stuff numbers of in-stock beds and they would work on pricing. I did what she said and left a voicemail and never heard from her again after leaving multiple voicemail. I then asked to speak to her manager Trey, who did absolutely nothing but set up a date to pick up the bed. I told him that I don't want it picked up unless a bed is delivered the same day to replace it.
I again gave him the SKU numbers and everything was out of stock. I asked him to reach out to the manager of the area, because I bought a couch that was "out of stock" and the manager suddenly made it available for me to buy. Trey didn't want to do that. He acted very lazy. You have to tie a string around his finger and lift it for him to do anything. I then asked for his manager, he said hold on, and hung up on me. Trey knew my phone number as he pulled it up to see what was going on. I have nailed two pieces of lumber to the middle of the bed to keep it propped up in the middle. DON'T EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM NFM.
My wife and I have been customers at NFM for just over 20 years. In that time we have purchased many household items and have always had great service. That is until we purchased an LG refrigerator from them in December of In the very first month the seals around the doors started to freeze up. We called NFM and they said we needed to call LG for warranty repair. We did and they sent a technician to replace themthen a couple months later the same thing happened, again they fixed it..didn't have any more problems with that.
A few months laterstill within the first year of purchasethe refrigerator stopped coolingwe called LG againthere was technology that allowed them to do a diagnostic test by holding the phone next to itthe results were inconclusive so they were going to schedule a tech to look at it but because we lived in Nebraska Citya rural area..they couldn't find an authorized repair serviceso in business days they locate someone for repairI was contacted by A & E Service from Omaha 4 days later to schedule an appointment..another 2 or 3 days laterby the time the technician arrived the fridge had started working again, so he couldn't find anything wrong. This happened again a few months later with the same results.
When it happened again within 2 years of purchase I contacted LG to see if I could get a technician to work on itafter finding one that would agree to do warranty work for LG they then had to be approved by LG. Once all the boxes were checked the tech determined it was the linear compressor that needed replaced. LG sent it to him and he installed it..that was in October Then over the next year or so it stopped working and restarted before the tech arrived 2 more times.
Then Jan. 28, it stopped again..it was looked at on February 4, again it was working and the tech said if it does it again just unplug the fridgefor at least 30 min to see if it restarts..the final straw was when it stopped again on Friday, February 15, I unplugged itwaited and plugged it back in, nothing so I called on Monday the 18th. I also called A & E Service directly as by now I know that's who they send for repairsI was told they wouldn't do anything until they received an order for repair from LGI asked to speak to a supervisor and was told it wouldn't do any good because he would tell the same thing and he hung up.
To shorten the story a bit I'll just say that from May 18 to July 8, I made multiple calls to both NFM and LG customer service departments trying to get my refrigerator repaired. On 7/8/ I called NFM again and spoke to Cosima and explained the entire circumstances up to that point. She said she would make some callsabout an hour later I received a call from a Joe at LG he said he was looking into it minutes later he calls back and tells me they are refunding the full purchase amount and that NFM would be calling to confirm receipt of the credit. Which they did in the amount of $ 3,
Now we just need to find a new fridge. After an extensive search and my wife reading product reviews and customer reviews we are ready to purchase so on September 9, we go to NFM and purchase a $4, GE Cafe, with our credit it will only be about $ We get to the register and find out that we can't use the credit right then and because it's a special order we need to pay $ upfrontwe do and delivery is set for October 10,
Now let's go back a bit to the refrigerator that stopped workingwe still have it at this pointfortunately we have a fridge in the basement and an adult beverage fridge in the garage which we were able utilize and manage without our main fridge in the kitchen. Then just prior to our original delivery date for the new fridge of October 10, I make arrangements to have the old one removedthen we are contacted by NFM stating that due to Covid our delivery will be delayed and will be notified with a new delivery date.
On October 10thwe were out of town.. and I received a call from NFM saying that drivers were in our driveway for the fridgeI asked if they had our new fridge because I had been told it was delayedhe said no..they were there to get the old oneI said that I had already gotten rid of it to make room for the new one as there had not been anything said about NFM or LG picking up the old onehe just said ok he'd tell the drivers. Our new fridge arrived January 9th, one of the plastic shelves had a piece broke and wouldn't stay in placebut I fixed it days later my wife got on our NFM account to check about the credit being applied. It hadn't beenshe called NFM to find out why and was told that LG pulled the credit because we didn't return the fridge. I called LG and they said it was a NFM issue. I made many phone calls to both LG and NFM over the next several months trying to get this resolved.
Finally I called and left a message for Scott **, the store Director in the Omaha storeI also called and left a message for Elizabeth ** the Director of Customer Services trying to get some resolution on this issue. They, or at least I was told he was calling on their behalf, had Andy, a manager in the Call Center, call me. He said that the warranty time frame for the LG refrigerator had expired and the credit was no longer valid. As a courtesy because we have been customers of NFM for over 20 years he was authorized to offer us $ to cover the cost of the extended warranty protection we purchased for the new GE and $ towards the old fridgea total of $ after over a year of dealing with both LG and NFM customer service departments I declined their offer. We are now thinking of getting a new stove, But it WON'T be at NFM.
I had a credit card through NFM and during Covid, I lost my job. Nebraska unemployment didn't pay me for quite a while so I wasn't able to make the payments. Nebraska Furniture Mart would not help me even though I was in severe hardship and still am. They sent me a regular bill in the mail that was due on 4/18 and at the same time sent the file to an attorney's office. I explained the bill I got and all the attorney kept saying was, "Are you wanting to set up payments" very rudely? NFM didn't even give me a chance to try and pay it and sent it anyway. No one would help me at all and it's not right!

We scouted the store for similar items in a range of prices. Here’s what we found.
We narrowed our search to 5-by-8 rugs in the aqua family.
High: An abstract design from Loloi features hand-knotted craftsmanship using silk, wool and viscose. $1,
Medium: This teal rug from Rizzy’s Technique collection is made with New Zealand wool. Artisans hand-carve a pattern in the solid colored rug, creating texture and dimension. $
Low: A graphic twist pattern adds a shot of style to the Baja rug from Momeni, which is made of polypropylene and can be used indoors or out. $
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the lamp selection, so we focused on table lamps in stylish mercury glass.
High: If the shine of the crackled silver finish isn’t glam enough for you, peek inside the shade of this table lamp. The shade is lined in a gold metallic finish that casts a golden glow downward. $
Medium: Oh, to be tall and skinny! Not only does this bottle-shaped lamp look good, it’s a workhorse, too. It would be just as home on a console or entry table as it would be atop a desk. $
Low: The petite lamp adds sparkle and texture to a room with its rounded shape and neutral shade. $
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the priciest of all? Any of these round metal accents can make a space seem bigger than it actually is if it’s placed in the right location.
High: A contemporary design in a golden finish, we can easily see this mirror above a mantel or as the showpiece on a gallery wall. $
Medium: Dupont finished its metal mirror in a distressed sage color. $
Low: Though this inch mirror, which features cut-outs, may come in as our low-priced option, it ranks high on the style scale. $
You can play it safe and neutral with your sofa, but when it comes to an accent chair, make a statement. We looked for pieces in fun shapes and geometric prints.
High: The poppy print in orange and white isn’t the only playful part of this swivel chair. Check out the curves on this skirted piece. $1,
Medium: The exposed wood, in a sleek lacquered gray, keeps this preppy navy-and-white upholstered chair from Sam Moore steeped in tradition. $
Low: Talk about fun: This petite accent chair has flared arms, flared legs and funky fabric in a rainbow of colors. $
Shoppers will find a sea of sofas on the second floor of the store. Whether you’re looking to outfit your first apartment, your dream home or something in between, there’s an option in your price range. We found three tufted options.
High: Soft, supple, sophisticated: This velvet beauty from Hickory Chair is accented with bolster pillows and nailhead trim on the high arms. $3,
Medium: With its Chesterfield design and shapley rolled arms, the Bespoke Linen Cigar Sofa is dressed to impress. The traditional style also features turned wood feet. $1,
Low: The Southern Furniture Quincey Contemporary Gray Sofa showcases both detail and texture. $
Some fill their bar carts with the ingredients for a cocktail, while others style it with vignettes and accessories — either way, you’ll find several to choose from.
High: The two-tiered design from Hickory Chair was inspired by an antique hotel service cart and includes a silver-plated tray with handles. We have a hard time imagining that this heirloom-quality piece will ever go out of style. $2,
Medium: A rolling bar cart in high-gloss lacquered royal blue makes a statement in any room. Play up the rich color with other bright accessories or let white pieces pop on the colorful background. $
Low: Fashion meets function in this sleek chrome service piece. The top tier features a glass tray and the bottom has a mirror. $
There are as many uses for trays as there are styles. Whether you use one as a tabletop centerpiece, a serving piece, to corral items together or to add a punch of color in a space, we’re of the opinion that you can never have too many.
High: A sleek silver finish square tray would work as well grounding a tablescape as it would keeping a countertop coffee station contained. We love the dainty feet on this one. $
Medium: The oversized wooden square is intended as an ottoman tray, but its simplicity means it can work in just about any space. $
Low: The wire-frame and fun French lettering will add personality to your next soiree. $
With everything from Viking appliances and state-of-the-art home theater equipment, it’s not hard to fantasize about spending big bucks and outfitting your home with top-of-the-line products while strolling through Nebraska Furniture Mart. But the store offers hundreds of items that will add function, fun or style to your life without having to rearrange your budget too much. Here are few we found for less than $
Drink it up: Le Creuset mug, $ each

The nose knows: Scented Park Hill candle, $
Make the call: Cork and gold iPhone 6 case, $

Hilarious adventures inside D-FW's Nebraska Furniture Mart
On Saturday, I Snapped my first visit to Nebraska Furniture Mart, which was equal parts exciting and terrifying.
Warren Buffett: a wannabe Texan?
This is what’s meant by the phrase, it was worth the price of admission. Seeing Warren Buffett sing and play “The Eyes of Texas” and “Deep in the Heart of Texas” on his ukulele was a hoot.
Competitors react to billion-dollar boast
North Texas furniture stores are preparing for a championship-level competition when Nebraska Furniture Mart opens its ,square-foot store in The Colony.
Her shoulders. Her breasts turned out to be small, Svetlana shook her head and tried to raise her. Despite her young age, her breasts were small, one might even say small, but saggy, slightly swollen in the nipple area, it's so amazing to look at this disproportion.
