How to factory reset your Fitbit: a step-by-step guide for all Fitbit wearables

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

If your Fitbit is having issues, a restart can usually solve most of your problems. If the problem persists, however, it might be time for a factory reset. This will wipe all of your stored data and return your Fitbit to its factory settings.

The trouble with Fitbit trackers and smartwatches is that most models have different factory reset methods. But we are here to help! Below you will find a step-by-step factory reset guide for every Fitbit wearable, from the good old original Fitbit Charge to the latest Fitbit Sense.

Fitbit factory reset

Fitbit Sense

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

The factory reset procedure for the Fitbit Sense is similar to the Versa series. Here’s how to do it:

  • Swipe left on your Sense’s home screen until you find the Settings icon. It will be a little gear. Tap it to open it.
  • Scroll vertically until you come to the About option. Tap it.
  • Select the Factory Reset option.

Fitbit Versa series

Factory resetting your Versa watch, whether you have the original model, the Versa 2, Versa 3, or Versa Lite is pretty simple. The method is the same for all four smartwatches. Here is what you need to do:

  • Swipe left from your smartwatch home screen until you find the Settings icon (gear). Tap it.
  • Scroll down to find About.
  • Tap it and select Factory Reset.

If your watch is not responding, however, you will need to perform a hard reset. On the original Versa, you will need to hold all three buttons down for around 10 seconds until you see the Fitbit logo. Let go of the bottom right button but keep pressing the other two when that happens. A strong vibration should follow. This means a factory reset has been performed and all of your data has been wiped.

Related:The best Fitbit apps — Get the most out of your fitness tracker

On the Versa 2, Versa 3, and Versa Lite, the process is slightly different since these smartwatches only have one button. Hold it down until the device reboots. When you see the Fitbit logo, release the button for a second or two and then hold it down again until you feel a long vibration indicating that a factory reset has taken place.

Fitbit Ionic

The Ionic is another Fitbit device that is pretty easy to reset. The steps are almost identical to those you need to follow on the Versa: Settings > About > FactoryReset or Clear User Data. If for some reason you can’t access the Settings app on your device, here is how to hard reset your Fitbit Ionic:

  • Hold all three buttons simultaneously until your Fitbit Ionic reboots.
  • When the Fitbit logo appears, let go of the bottom right button.
  • Wait for a strong vibration and let go of all of the buttons when you feel it. All of your data will be wiped. It might take a little longer than usual for your watch to turn back on after you’ve performed a factory reset.

Fitbit Inspire, Inspire 2, and Inspire HR

The Fitbit Inspire, Inspire 2, and Inspire HR trackers have pretty small screens, but you can still perform a factory reset directly through your device. Here is how to do that:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Find and select Clear User Data.
  • When prompted, hold the screen for three seconds then release it.
  • A vibration will indicate that the factory reset has been performed.

Fitbit Charge and Charge HR

The factory reset process for the Fitbit Charge and Charge HR is bit more involved than some other fitness trackers. Grab your charger and follow these steps to factory reset your Fitbit Charge or Charge HR:

  • Plug the charging cable into your device and then into a USB port.
  • Press and hold your Charge’s button without letting go for two seconds.
  • Disconnect the charging cable from your tracker and waiting around ten seconds.
  • Release the button and then press and hold it again.
  • Watch your screen — an ALT text followed by a white screen should flash. When they do, let go of the button shortly and hold it down once again.
  • Wait for a vibration. When you feel it, remove your finger from the button for a second then press and hold it again.
  • You will see ERROR on your screen. Repeat the “let go and hold the button” step. Your Charge tracker should turn off.
  • Turn it back on and plug in the charging cable. If the timer reads 0:00, your factory reset has been successful.

Fitbit Charge 2, Charge 3, and Charge 4

If you have a Fitbit Charge 2, you are in for an unpleasant surprise. This tracker cannot be factory reset. If you are having an issue, you can try a soft restart. This is performed by connecting your Charge 2 to its charging cable and simply pressing and holding the side button for about four seconds. It will vibrate and display the Fitbit logo once when it has restarted. If you still want to wipe your data, it’s as simple as disconnecting the device from your Fitbit account.

The Fitbit Ace and Ace 2 are great kids fitness trackers but they are not without their problems. Unfortunately, the original Fitbit Ace does not offer a hard factory reset method. You can simply disconnect the device from your account to wipe it if you are experiencing issues. The newer Fitbit Ace 2, however, can be factory reset with ease. Here is how to do that:

  • Connect the Fitbit Ace 2 to its charging cable and make sure it’s plugged in.
  • Open the Settings app and scroll until you find the Clear User Data option. It will not appear unless your Fitbit Ace 2 is plugged in.
  • Tap it and press the screen for three seconds when prompted. The tracker will vibrate, indicating your child’s data has been wiped.

Fitbit Alta and Alta HR

The Fitbit Alta and Alta HR are also among the trackers that cannot be factory reset. Your data can still be wiped, however, by disconnecting the Fitbit Alta from your account. You can do so through the Fitbit app on your smartphone:

  • Open the Fitbit app, then tap on the profile icon in the upper left corner.
  • Under Devices, find your Fitbit Alta or Alta HR and select it.
  • Tap the small trash can icon in the upper right corner to disconnect the tracker from your account. Your data will be erased.

Fitbit Zip

The Fitbit Zip is one of the more unusual trackers in the Fitbit family. This clip-on device has been around for quite a while, but it’s still popular among those that prefer not to wear their trackers on their wrists. Unfortunately, as an older device the Fitbit Zip does not offer a hard factory reset. If you need to troubleshoot problems with the device, your best option is restarting it. Here is how restart it:

  • Find the battery door tool provided with your device.
  • Open it and remove the Fitbit Zip’s battery.
  • Wait around ten second before reinserting the battery into the tracker. Make sure you place it with the plus side facing up.

Older Fitbit wearables

Most Fitbit fitness trackers and watches that came out before 2016, like the Fitbit Flex, Surge, and Blaze cannot be factory reset. Your best troubleshooting option usually is a soft reset, i.e. a restart. On most older Fitbit wearables this can be achieved by following these steps:

  • Connect your Fitbit to its charging cable and make sure it’s plugged in and placed properly.
  • Hold down the button between five to ten seconds. You will usually see the Fitbit logo appear or the screen will flash. Release the button or buttons when it happens.
  • Disconnect the tracker from its charger and turn it back on if necessary.

On some trackers like the Fitbit Flex 2, you will need to locate and press the button on the charging cable itself once the tracker is connected. Press it a couple of times in quick succession until all of the lights on the tracker light up to restart it.

How to:Fix some of Fitbit’s most common issues and problems

What about wiping your data? In most cases, older Fitbit trackers and watches can be reset by being disconnected from your Fitbit account. You can follow the same steps we provided for the Alta and Alta HR trackers. None of your data will be transferred after the device is connected to a new account, so you can rest easy.

How to reset a Fitbit: Restart your Charge 4, Versa, Sense or Inspire

Your Fitbit may act reliably most of the time, but if it's playing up – or you want to give it to someone else – you need to know how to unpair and reset your Fitbit.

Whether you have a Charge 4, Versa 3, Sense or Inspire 2, if your Fitbit is failing to respond, won't track or sync, or you want to gift it to a friend, it's best to start with a clean slate.

There are also occasions when you may want to give your Fitbit tracker or smartwatch a full factory reset, erase your data.

In this guide, we've detailed exactly how to restart every Fitbit device - jump to your device or head below to read the steps to unpair or factory reset your Fitbit.

Fitbit factory reset and unpairing

Factory reset Fitbit

Further down this page, we'll explain how to perform a soft reset for each Fitbit, which essentially means giving your tracker a quick restart. However, sometimes, you need more than that, and sometimes you will want to clear your user data entirely.

Not every Fitbit will allow you to perform a factory reset from the device itself, but there are ways for each to start from a blank slate again.

Fitbit factory reset

1. From your tracker, swipe across to the 'Settings' menu.

2. Once in the 'Settings' section, find the 'About' tab and tap it.

3. From here, scroll to the section that's labelled 'Factory Reset' or 'Clear User Data'.

4. You'll then be prompted to confirm the decision to clear your Fitbit to its box settings. If you want to, hit 'Reset' or 'Confirm'.

Unpairing Fitbit

Unpairing a Fitbit can not only free your account up to pair with a new device, but it can also mean it's free to be linked to another Fitbit account. So if you get a new Fitbit device and want to gift your old one to someone else, follow these steps:

If you're having issues with your Fitbit, unpairing and going through the setup process can also help resolve this.

1. From the Fitbit app, tap the icon in the top-left corner and then your tracker.

2. Scroll down to the bottom of this menu to the 'Remove This [Device Name]' tab.

3. Make sure all you data is synced, as unpairing will see this lost.

4. If you're ready to unpair the device from your account, confirm the prompt after you tap the 'Remove This [Device Name]' tab.

My Fitbit has been reset but won't pair to a different smartphone

Top tip: Often after you have used the Fitbit app to remove the device, you may have trouble when repairing the device with a different smartphone e.g. your spouses.

That's because sometimes unpairing from the Fitbit app doesn't "forget" the connection between your phone's Bluetooth and the Fitbit.

So head to the Bluetooth menu on the phone, see if the Fitbit is still listed and choose "Forget this device". You should be ready to pair immediately.

Reset the Fitbit Versa 3, 2 and Sense

How to reset a Fitbit: Restart your Charge 3/4, Versa, Sense or Inspire

Resetting the Versa 3, Versa 2, Versa Lite, Sense, Ionic and Blaze is perhaps the easiest example of restarting a device from Fitbit.

1. Press and hold the left button until you see the Fitbit logo on the screen. This should take roughly 10 - 15 seconds.

2. When the Fitbit logo appears, let go of the buttons.

3. Once complete, you should be prompted to open the Fitbit app and set up your device.

Reset Fitbit Versa or Versa Lite

1. Press and hold the left and bottom buttons until you see the Fitbit logo on the screen. This should take roughly 5 - 10 seconds.

2. When the Fitbit logo appears, let go of the buttons.

3. Once complete, you should be prompted to open the Fitbit app and set up your device.

Reset the Fitbit Charge 3/4

Reset Fitbit Charge 3 or Charge 4

If you're having trouble syncing, tracking or connecting to the Fitbit Charge 4 (or earlier versions of the Fitbit Charge), it's time to restart the tracker.

To do so from the tracker, swipe from the clock face to Settings > Info > Reboot Device.

However, if the tracker isn't responding, follow these instructions:

1. Plug the charging cable into a USB port and connect the other end of the port to the back of the tracker.

2. Make sure the button on your tracker is in line with the button opening on the charging cable. The tracker will vibrate and you see a battery icon pop up on the tracker's display.

3. Hold the button to restart your tracker:

  • For Charge 2, press and hold the button on your tracker for four seconds. When you see the Fitbit logo and the tracker vibrates, the tracker has restarted.
  • For Charge 3, press and hold the button on your tracker for eight seconds. When you see a smile icon and the tracker vibrates, the tracker has restarted.

Reset the Fitbit Inspire 2, Inspire and Inspire HR

Reset Fitbit Inspire or Inspire HR

No matter whether you have the Inspire HR, the non-HR version or the Inspire 2, if you find you can't sync your tracker or you're having issues with tracking, here's how you can restart it:

1. Plug the charging cable into a USB port and follow this by connecting the end to the back of the Inspire tracker, ensuring the pins are locked into place.

2. From there, press and hold the left button on the device for five seconds.

3. Once the smiley face appears the tracker vibrates, it's restarting. Again, like with the other restarts, this reboots but doesn't factory reset your device.

Reset the Fitbit Ionic

Reset Fitbit Ionic

Resetting the now retired Ionic is actually performed in the same way as the Versa, and is another easy example of restarting a device from Fitbit.

1. Press and hold the left and bottom buttons until you see the Fitbit logo on the screen. This should take roughly 10 seconds.

2. When the Fitbit logo appears, let go of the buttons.

3. Once complete, you should be prompted to open the Fitbit app and set up your device.

Reset the Fitbit Alta HR

Reset Fitbit Alta HR

Unfortunately, you can't perform a factory reset on the Alta or Alta HR. Instead, you will have to restart your device.

1. Plug the charging cable into a USB port and connect the other end of the port to the back of the tracker, making sure the pins on the cable are securely locked.

2. You’ll know the connection is secure when the tracker vibrates and you see a battery icon on the tracker's display. The tracker will then begin charging.

3. Press the button on your charging cable three times, briefly pausing between presses. When you see the Fitbit logo and the tracker vibrates, this means the tracker has restarted.

Reset the Fitbit Ace 2 and Ace

Reset Fitbit Ace

If you want to reset the Fitbit Ace 2 or the Ace, follow these steps:

1. Start by plugging the charging cable into the USB port or wall plug and clip the other end of the charging cable to the port on the back of the tracker.

2. Make sure the pins are lined up - you'll know the connection is secure when the tracker vibrates and the battery icon pops up.

3. To restart, press the button (located on the end of the charging cable) on the charging cable three times within eight seconds, briefly pausing between presses.

4. Then, eight seconds after the first button press, the Fitbit logo appears on the Ace's display, indicating it has been restarted.

5. Once the logo appears, the Ace will begin to restart and you're free to unplug it from the charging cable.

How to Set Up Fitbit Inspire HR (and Customize it)

Fitbit Inspire HR tips and tricks

Fitbit is still by many as the ruler of fitness trackers, and for good reason. The Fitbit Inspire HR may be an entry-level wearable fitness tracker from a few years ago now, but it’s lost none of the flair that made it such a good choice back in 2019. Its slick, sleek presentation and no-nonsense approach to tracking meant Fitbit could keep the price down, but without compromising on any of the features you actually needed.

An old dog may not be able to learn new tricks, but this device still has plenty of features to explore. We walk you through some of our favorite Fitbit Inspire HR tips and tricks to help you use your fitness tracker to its fullest potential.

Setting up the Fitbit Inspire HR

After unpacking your Inspire HR fitness tracker, the first thing you’ll want to do is set up your device by adding it to your account and connecting it to your mobile device. Start by downloading and installing the Fitbit app from either the iOS app store or the Google Play store. Then, open the Fitbit app and either tap Join Fitbit to create a new account or choose to log in to an existing account if you already have one. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a Fitbit account or enter your current account credentials.

After logging into your account, you need to add the Inspire HR to your Fitbit account by tapping the Account icon at the very top right. Tap Set up a Device and select the Inspire HR from the list of available trackers. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your new tracker and pair it to your mobile device.

Syncing the Fitbit Inspire HR

Fitbit Inspire HR tips and tricks

Fitbit devices usually synchronize automatically throughout the day, but you can turn that feature on or off in the device settings. Open the Fitbit app, tap the Inspire HR device icon in the top left. Use the toggle to turn on or off the All-Day Sync feature.

If you turn off the all-day sync feature, you should still sync at least once a day to keep your stats up-to-date. Just open the Fitbit app, and the Inspire HR will sync when it’s nearby. You can also manually sync by tapping the Inspire HR device icon in the top left and then scrolling down to the Sync Now option at the bottom.

How to use sleep tracking

The ability to track your sleep is a great bonus with every Fitbit accessory these days, and the Inspire HR is no exception. Tracking your sleep has value, because it can tell you how restful your sleep was, and how long you slept. Getting fulfilling sleep is important when recovering from exercise. You don’t need to do anything to turn on sleep tracking on your Inspire HR — just wear it to bed and it’ll start tracking automatically when it detects you’ve fallen asleep.

How to use Screen Wake

Screen Wake allows you to turn on the watch’s screen when you raise your wrist. Just press and hold the side button on the Inspire HR to open the quick settings screen. Swipe up or down to find the Screen Wake setting (light bulb icon), and tap Screen Wake to switch between off (press button) and on (raise wrist).

Using Quick Settings

Press and hold the button on your tracker to reach the quick settings screen. Here you can check the battery level, turn the Screen Wake on or off, and toggle notifications. The icons are bright when the feature is turned on and dim to indicate that the option is turned off.

How to move back through the tracker menus

The Inspire HR only has one button, and it serves as a back button. When you’ve tapped your way deep into the settings or an app, click the side button a few times, and you’ll be back to the comfort of the clock face.

How to turn on/off automatic exercise tracking

Automatic exercise tracking detects when you begin an exercise and will start tracking it without your intervention. Some people appreciate the simplicity of this automatic tracking, while others prefer not to use it. To turn it off, open the Fitbit app and go to the app dashboard. Tap the Exercise tile and then the gear icon to see a list of activities that support automatic tracking. Tap each exercise and turn off the auto-recognize setting as desired.

How to start/pause/stop an exercise

To start a workout, you need to swipe down on the clock face to the Exercises screen. Tap Exercises and then scroll up or down to select the activity that you want. Tap the Start button when you are ready to begin.

Once you are exercising, you can click the side button to pause the activity. It will stay on hold until you tap on the start button on the Inspire HR display. When you are done exercising, merely click the side button a second time to finish the activity.

How to add new exercises to your tracker

Fitbit Inspire HR tips and tricks

Inspire HR includes six default exercises that you can change to suit your needs. Open the mobile app, tap the Inspire HR icon in the upper left corner, and scroll to Exercise Shortcuts. In this section, you can add new exercises, remove exercises and rearrange them. You also can configure each activity in this section choosing whether you want to use cues that tell you when you are approaching your goal.

How to set exercise and health goals

Fitbit allows you to set specific daily goals for health and fitness parameters such as activity, exercise, nutrition, and sleep. You can customize these values in the mobile app by tapping on the account icon in the upper right corner and scrolling to the Goals section. Select the goal you want to configure and update the details. The next time you sync, this new information will be sent to your device.

View your daily statistics

Swipe up from the clock face on the Inspire HR to see your health and fitness stats. If you set a goal in the Fitbit app, each stat shows a ring with your progress toward that goal. You can swipe up to scroll through the following:

  • Steps
  • Heart rate
  • Calories Burned
  • Active minutes
  • Distance Covered
  • Exercise Goal
  • Sleep
  • Cycle track
  • Water
  • Weight

How to download a clock face

To download a new clock face, you need to open the Fitbit app on your mobile device and tap the device icon in the top left of the screen. Tap the Clock Faces tile to view all the available faces. Found a clock face that catches your eye? Tap to install and sync your watch to make the change. If you tap the Apps tile, you can view the apps you already have installed on the Inspire HR, but you cannot download new ones to your tracker.

How to check your battery life

The default clock face on the Inspire HR does not contain a battery meter. To check your battery, press and hold the side button to access the quick setting screen where you will see the battery meter.

How to configure notifications

You can receive texts, calls, and even view app notifications on your Inspire HR. To control which alerts you can see on your tracker, head over to the mobile app and tap on the Inspire HR device icon at the top left. Tap on Notifications and use the toggles to turn notifications for calls, text messages, and calendar events on or off. To change notifications for mobile apps, select App notifications and choose which notifications should be pushed to your tracker. You can also turn off all notifications by using the Quick settings menu which you can access by pressing and holding the side button.

How to factory reset the Inspire HR

If you are returning your Inspire HR fitness tracker or selling it to someone else, you should perform a factory reset to wipe data from the device. On Inspire HR, open the Settings app by swiping down from the clock face. Tap Settings and then Clear User Data. Follow the instructions to remove all your information from the fitness tracker.

How to restart the Inspire HR

Knowing how to reboot the Inspire HR can be a lifesaver when something goes awry, and the tracker locks up. You start by connecting the Inspire HR to the charging cable. Press and hold the button on your tracker for five seconds and then release the button. Once you see a smiley face and the Inspire HR vibrates, the tracker has restarted.

How to reset your Fitbit by model

We don’t recommend resetting your Fitbit unless the restart didn’t work, OR you intend to give away or sell your Fitbit to someone else.

That’s because resetting your Fitbit also resets all your data–it’s like starting with a fresh & new Fitbit.

In cases where your Fitbit continues to perform poorly, refuses to sync data, or continues not to be recognized by your phone, computer, etc., even after a restart, we do recommend you reset your Fitbit.

But with the knowledge that your data is removed and following a factory reset, you must set up your Fitbit again.

When you perform a factory reset, the reset deletes all device data, including any data that has not synced to your Fitbit app and account.

This includes things like your personalized settings, alarms, goals, and notifications.

Resetting your Fitbit DOES NOT remove your Fitbit account!

Reset a Fitbit Sense, Versa Series, Ionic, or Charge 3 & 4

  1. Go to the Settings app (gear icon.)
  2. Choose About.
  3. Select Factory Reset or Clear User Data.Factory Reset or Shutdown menu on Fitbit Versa
  4. Confirm with Yes.

Factory reset using the buttons only

If you cannot access the on-screen menus, try resetting using just your Fitbit button(s).

We recommend only following these steps when you cannot access the Settings app on your Fitbit’s screen.

For Fitbit Sense, Versa Lite, 2 and 3 (one button models)

  1. Press and hold the side button until the screen turns off.
  2. After the screen turns off, you should feel a short vibration.
  3. As soon as you feel the vibration, release the side button and immediately press and hold that button again.
  4. Keep pressing until the Fitbit logo appears and disappears, and then once again immediately release the button and press and hold it until you feel another vibration.
  5. After you feel that vibration, release the side button, this final vibration indicates you started the factory reset for your Fitbit.

If you run older software on your one-button Versa Series, try these steps

  1. Hold the back button for about 8 seconds.
  2. Wait for the Fitbit logo to appear, then disappear. Release the button briefly for less than 2 seconds.
  3. Hold the button again until you feel a second and longer vibration, then release it. This longer vibration indicates the factory reset started.

For Fitbit Versa (original) and Ionic (multiple button models)

  1. Hold all buttons down for around 10 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears, then disappears.
  2. Release the bottom right button only while still pressing and holding the remaining two buttons–wait until you feel a strong vibration, then release all the buttons.

If you followed the process correctly, your Fitbit should show the setup screen. At this point, open the Fitbit app to set up your Fitbit again.

If you don’t release the button(s) at the right time or didn’t follow the exact order of the steps, the Fitbit simply restarts. Try repeating the reset steps.

I have an MFA in media making from Temple University, where I also taught undergrads as an adjunct faculty member. So I know a thing or two about teaching others and creating how-to guides! After a cancer diagnosis, I turned to mobile technology like my Apple Watch to help me monitor my health throughout my chemotherapy treatment and later, to regain my wellness once in remission. I love sharing how to understand and use mobile tech, like smartwatches and phones, as a tool for empowerment to live our best and healthiest lives!
