These 10 Ikea office ideas are perfect and budget-friendly solutions if you need to work from home, whether you have a large or small space!
I’m on a home office kick, and since the kids needed a distance-learning space for school this year, I got to design and set up another Ikea office/ desk over the Summer.
Why Ikea Office Furniture?
I often gravitate toward Ikea when I need office furniture. Why? It’s inexpensive, stylish, and modular. It’s also easy to make some tweaks to the Ikea pieces to make them fit your space perfectly.
Plus, I love that they make so many inexpensive storage pieces- from bookcases, to file cabinets, to pegboards. I usually end up supplementing with a few things from other retailers, but it usually starts with a few simple pieces from Ikea.
If you don’t have an Ikea near you, here’s a list of my favorite inexpensive desks for home offices. These are all available online in 2021!
1. My Ikea corner office
When I created this Ikea home office for my growing business, I never imagined how popular it would be. You can see more pictures and all the details of how we hacked it with just a few brackets from Home Depot below!
2. Long Ikea-Hacked Desk With Multiple Workstations
This one isn’t technically an office- I actually designed it to be a distance-learning desk for the kids, with a chair in the center for me.
But it would work just as well as a shared home office. By building an extra-long desk top to go with the drawer units from Ikea, we were able to create a more custom look. If it was going to have just two workstations, I would add a third drawer unit in the center.
You can see all the details of how we put this together and shop the space below.
3. Closet Office
What should you do if you don’t have room for a workspace? Transform an under-used closet into a closet office or “cloffice.”
Peter’s desk has been in the TV room closet for several years. I gave it a fun makeover a few months ago- back when we all thought we would just be quarantined for a few more weeks!
4. DIY Foating Desks
The desks themselves aren’t from Ikea, but all the wall organizers are! If you just need a small workspace for a laptop or a child’s bedroom, this is a great space-saving and inexpensive DIY desk option to consider! You can see how we built them below.
5. Modern Alex Drawer Unit Makeover
Medina from Grillo Designs gave an Alex drawer unit from Ikea a super-chic modern makeover! Check out her post to see how she did it!
6. Ikea Drawers With Fun New Legs!
My friend Stephanie, from Casa Watkins Living created this stunning office in her basement. It’s full of Ikea pieces, and I’m especially loving her Alex drawer unit hack!
6. Glam Ikea Office
I love the dramatic modern Ikea cabinetry in this office from Love Create Celebrate.
Sarah from Making Joy and Pretty Things did some amazing Ikea-hacking in this gorgeous home office space!
7. Ikea-hack Office Nook Under the Stairs
I love this creative small-space office nook under the stairs by Medina of Grillo Designs. It’s perfect for a kid’s or teen’s room or any tight space.
I hope this gives you some great ideas for your own workspace!

The Space10 redesign transformed the innovation lab’s three-story office, which serves as home base to its 27 employees as well as a rotating cast of designers and creatives that the lab collaborates with regularly. Spacon & X originally designed the office three years ago, and this refresh was meant to provide more privacy and give employees more flexibility in their individual work spaces.
The architects designed a series of modular pods that are a mix between an open desk cluster and a cubicle: each pod fits a small group of desks belonging to one team. The walls around the cube have inset acoustic panels from ECHOJAZZ made of recycled plastic to reduce noise and create more visual privacy as well. Teams that need more quiet time can add more of these panels to make the cube more isolated and peaceful, or the panels can be removed to open the space up to the rest of the office. “The workstations are crucial for divvying up space for various activities, and people can customize their own work spaces as they see fit,” Kevin Curran, the program lead at Space10 who led the redesign, tells Fast Company via email. “By providing privacy and sound absorption, the solution means that those inside don’t get distracted–or distract others ‘outside.’” Employees are also encouraged to move around, choosing their setting to suit what they’re working on, whether that’s a deep concentration cocoon, an armchair, or a standing desk–and the office provides all of these different kinds of environments to support that.
“The design accommodates both extroverts and introverts; catering to people who thrive from chatting to passing colleagues as well as those who need peace and quiet; providing space for creatives who prefer a neat desk as well as people who need to spread out sketches all around them to do their best work–so redesigning our space to accommodate subjective preferences was a necessity, not a luxury,” writes Polina Bachlakova, an editor at Space10.
Despite their current popularly, open-plan offices have been a huge productivity failure. Originally touted as a way to promote collaboration, they actually reduce face-to-face communication in favor of texting and email.
Meanwhile, open-plan offices are so visually distracting and noisy that people can't concentrate. They also increase gender discrimination and allow germs to spread, all of which results in greater absenteeism and huge reductions in overall productivity.
All of that is well-established science at this point, which leaves companies with a single reason to implement open plan: You can cram more people into a smaller space, thereby reducing the cost of office floor space.
As I've previously pointed out, this can be a false economy, because the cost of labor is higher than the cost of floor space. Therefore, even a 15 percent drop in productivity usually eats up any cost savings that might result.
That being said, there aren't all that many alternatives available at this time. Cubicles provide a bit more privacy and a bit less noise, but they're ugly and depressing. Workers like private offices but they can encourage stovepiping.
The most effective alternative, designed by Steve Jobs, consists of private offices surrounding a hub of common area that's specifically for socializing. That design, however, involves at least twice as much floor space as traditional private office. It's simply too expensive for most companies, especially startups.
So we end up back where we started--which is trying to find some way to make open-plan offices less toxic.
Some companies have added "phone booths" to their open plans to provide workers with some quiet time for concentration. Such structures, though, are either claustrophobia-inducing (like a bathroom stall) or like working in a fishbowl.
Not to worry. It appears that Ikea--of all companies--has squared the circle with modular office furniture and structures that allow employees to build, deconstruct, redesign, and rebuild environments that match the work that they're trying to accomplish. As my colleague Katharine Schwab at Fast Company explains:
The architects designed a series of modular pods that are a mix between an open desk cluster and a cubicle: each pod fits a small group of desks belonging to one team. The walls around the cube have inset acoustic panels made of recycled plastic to reduce noise and create more visual privacy as well. Teams that need more quiet time can add more of these panels to make the cube more isolated and peaceful, or the panels can be removed to open the space up to the rest of the office.
The concept apparently originates in the way workers in open-plan offices improvise barriers to block out visual pollution, create privacy, and dampen ambient noise. However, it's also much like the way kids built "forts" and "playhouses" out of cardboard boxes.
That Ikea would come up with such an original design is a bit surprising, since it's better known for home furniture than for office furniture. However, the idea was prototyped for an Ikea R&D facility rather than explicitly developed as a product line.
Which means, unfortunately, that you can't drive down to your local Ikea tomorrow with a van and stock up on what you need to make your open office livable. On the other hand, having invented a concept the world needs badly, can an Ikea product line be far behind?
