Every Top Makeup Artist Is Obsessed With This New Sustainable Makeup Remover

I think I speak for more than just myself when I say that my least favorite part about being a makeup-wearing human is not putting the stuff on, but taking it off. Like someone who loves to cook but hates doing the dishes afterward, I will giddily load up my face with foundation, concealer, powder, blush, bronzer, highlighter, the works, but when the end of the night arrives and it's time to erase it all, I'm flooded with dread. Most of my frustration stems from the fact that thoroughly removing my face makeup is a time-consuming task, requiring intensive combinations of cleansing oils, gel cleansers, and makeup wipes to have any hope of getting all the gunk out of my pores. Not to mention I am ethically in conflict with all the disposable pads and wipes the process requires. I'm ashamed to admit this, especially as a beauty editor, but as a result, there's at least one night out of every week when I say screw it and go to bed without taking my makeup off at all. Yes, I feel you cringing at me, and yes, I deserve it.

So last year, when this Australian-made, reusable makeup-removing pad called Face Halo hit Byrdie HQ, I was deeply intrigued.

Face Halo

Best for: All skin types

Uses: Removing makeup

Star Rating: 5/5

Potential allergens: None

Price: $22 for three

About the brand: Face Halo was founded by Lizzy Pike in May Her unique background in fiber technology inspired her to create an Earth-friendly, non-toxic makeup remover.

Face Halo Reusable Makeup Remover Pads

Face HaloFace Halo Original$22

The Design

Face Halo, which comes in a pack of three, is this incredibly absorbent plush pad that you just soak in regular tap water, and then glide over your face to remove your makeup. The pads are made of a special high-performance, ultra-fine form of a microfiber (HaloTech Fiber, the brand calls it), which was designed specifically to pick up makeup and dirt from human faces—pores, crevices, and all. The original Face Halo has a white surface, which allows you to see how well it's working because it quickly becomes completely covered in makeup. Unlike a makeup remover wipe that simply smears your makeup, the fibers trap the makeup so it doesn't go back onto your face.

The Feel

The Face Halo is satin on one side, while the other has the brand's signature HaloTech fiber that is times finer than a strand of human hair. This translates to an incredibly soft feel that doesn't tug or pull on the skin at all.

How to Use

Using the Face Halo is super easy. You don't even need soap or a cleanser—all you have to do is get it wet with water (and I mean actually, really wet—basically submerged in water). Squeeze out any excess water and gently glide the pad across your face. If you're like me, your instinct will be to rub or scrub it against your face, but there's no need. It does all of the heavy lifting for you. When you're finished, clean the Face Halo with warm water and soap and let it dry.

Once the pads get totally dirty, after two uses or so each, you just throw them in the washing machine along with the rest of your laundry and then you're free to use them again, good as new. Each makeup round can be washed about times, so they'll last for quite a while before you need to replace them.

The Results

Our former wellness editor Victoria reviewed the Face Halo right after its launch and was impressed by how easily it removed her face makeup using nothing but water. I got my hands on a trio of pads a few months later and was equally smitten with how well it took off my foundation, lipstick, and mascara. I was even more convinced after watching the brand give a demonstration to prove how much better the HaloTech picks up product than a regular makeup wipe: A Face Halo rep performed a side-by-side comparison in which she applied foundation to the skin of a grapefruit, which has pores similar to humans, and then removed half of it with a makeup wipe and half with the Face Halo. While the wipe left some foundation behind, the Halo was able to get inside all the nooks and crannies to pick up nearly every remaining trace of product.

Why Pro MUAs Love It

Hollywood makeup artists were also taken with the product as soon as it came out and began adding to their kits in place of makeup wipes. Just a few who've sung its praises are Monika Blunder (whose clients include Amanda Seyfried and Emilia Clarke), Rachel Goodwin (Emma Stone, Selma Blair), Lisa Aharon (Anna Kendrick, Rachel Brosnahan), Molly Stern (Reese Witherspoon, Lily Collins), and Jamie Greenberg (Elisabeth Moss, Jessica Alba). "It's nice to the skin because it isn't stripping it with harsh ingredients or textures, so I don't have to worry about disrupting my clients' PH balance," Goodwin said of the product. Lisa Aharon has also used the product on her client Anna Kendrick and said, “If you are looking to make a change in the world as a makeup artist, this is a great place to start."

The OG Face Halo, with its bright white surface, though great for an at-home user, wasn't exactly ideal for makeup artists, since it could get stained inside their kits and look less than professional. So the brand had an idea to come up with an all-black version named Face Halo Pro. The all-black product is available now, so consumers can decide whether they want the white version or the black version. Both are the exact same price, $22, and made of the same sustainable HaloTech material.

If you want to see how well the Face Halo is working, opt for the white version, but if you're a MUA or just looking for something chicer and cleaner, then the black version is your best bet.

Makeup artists are using the Face Halo Pro on their celebrity clients and are freaking out so hard over it, that it makes me want a trio of these chic black disks for myself. After all, I've been wracking my brain to think of a makeup remover that's both more elegant-looking and eco-friendlier, and I can't come up with anything.

The Value

I honestly don't think there is a more cost effective way to remove makeup besides the Face Halo. Let's do some math: each set of three pads is $ Each pad can be used up to washes, so that means you have washes of product. If we're assuming you're only using it once a day, for days a year, you have about a year and a half of product before you have to replace them. If you've been spending $5-$20 bucks on face wipes, pricey makeup removers and cotton pads every few months, then making the switch to using the Face Halo is a no brainer—and it's better for the planet.

Similar Products

The Original MakeUp Eraser Makeup Remover Cloth: If you want a more traditional feeling makeup remover experience (aka you like wash cloths), this is a great option. Priced at $20, this double-sided cloth features one side to remove makeup, and the other to gently exfoliate the skin.

Croon Cleanse Starter Kit: For $29, you can get two microfiber makeup remover discs, a reusable pouch for storage and a cute laundry bag to wash them in. Each disc is also good for up to washes.

Our Verdict

If you're looking for ways to make your skincare routine more sustainable, the Face Halo is a fantastic option. It's really effective at removing your makeup (and I mean all of your makeup) and the fact that professional MUAs love it is just the icing on the cake.

19 Essential Makeup Tools and Innovative Gadgets for Your Beauty Arsenal

Last week we listed my favourite moisturisers for oily and/or sensitive skin, this week we&#;re taking on make-up wipe alternatives.

Eco-friendly makeup removers that actually work are really hard to come by, but we did the work so you don&#;t have to! Get into your ships ladies, there&#;s a new world to conquer.

Screenshot png

If you&#;re trying to make your post night-out routine a little greener, then the easiest thing to do is to ditch makeup wipes. They&#;re made up of little synthetic fibres that stop them from being recyclable or compostable. A study found that the amount of wet wipes found on British beaches went up by 50% in just a year!

Reusable makeup pads are the way forward if you prefer that method of makeup removal, they can easily be washed (although definitely make sure you dry them quickly in a dryer or on the radiator so they don&#;t pick up traces of mould!) and are gentle on the skin.

They&#;re also amazing if you hate using any cleansing products in general!

  1. Face Halo

A rising star in the reusable makeup remover pad world is the Face Halo, created by YouTuber now turned beauty mogul Chloe Morello. It has rave reviews on Twitter and Instagram, and all you need to do is just add water.

They are a little pricey, but last for ages and can take off thick makeup in one wipe. If you live in the UK you can buy it here or you can get it on the Face Halo website.

2. Norwex Cloths

Ok so this is a weird one. People on the internet are using these eco-friendly house cleaning cloths on their face? I checked it out and it turns out its perfectly safe to use them on your face. They have absolutely no chemicals in them, just very good micro-fiber material!

According to users, it’s great if you have ultra sensitive skin, as all the fiber is really gentle and it only requires water. Plus, it’s extremely absorbent and literally takes a couple of wipes to remove every thing.

Norwex is a great company as well, it funds research into plastic and chemical free cleaning alternatives and reducing the use of both in general. Plus, they&#;re cheaper than many cloths actually marketed as makeup remover pads.

You can buy it here

3. The Afterspa Magic Makeup Cloth

At just £, this is the cheapest alternative to reusable pads that is genuinely loved by its users. According to this independent review, it&#;s gentle and maintains its quality after lots of machine washes.

Just add water and you&#;re good to go! You can get your own here

4. The Jelly Ball Cleanser

Honestly hats off to the people paid to come up with exciting alternatives to cleansers. Back in the s, people thought would be home to flying cars and hovercrafts. But here we are in this Brave New World and you can now wash your face with a jelly ball.

When you try to do one of those click-bait Instagram cover photo thingys but end up actually eating the product & it taste like 💩 #relatable __________________________________________________ Omg you guys I just tried the new @boscia Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser and it was very interesting 😂 __________________________________________________ Here's instructions on how to use it from the website: ⚫️ -Open box and remove plastic-enclosed jelly ball and provided pick. Peel off tape around plastic-enclosed jelly ball. Please note that jelly ball is covered in a thin latex balloon inside the plastic encasement. ⚫️ -Using provided pick, puncture jelly ball in plastic encasement from seal-covered hole at top of ball to break balloon. ⚫️ -To cleanse, remove jelly ball from bottom plastic base and massage it directly over wet face in gentle, circular motions; or, wet ball, lather in hands, and massage product onto face with fingertips. ⚫️ -Rinse face clean with warm water and place jelly ball back into bottom plastic base or top plastic lid to dry. Can be used daily, morning and night. With continued use, jelly ball will become smaller. __________________________________________________ MY REVIEW: I actually really liked it! It was fun to use & my face felt clean but not tight afterwards. Plus I've had it on my sink for a few days and it does NOT dry out! Which I think is super cool. I would buy it again! I purchased this from Sephora for $20! __________________________________________________ Would you guys try this?! Are there any other crazy beauty products you want me to try? Let me know down below! ⬇️

People love this, but they have to cool it on the plastic packaging (it&#;s excessive). Apparently it lasts for ages though, and because it has charcoal in it your skin feels light and breezy after the wash.

Buy it here

5. Beauty Balms

If you&#;re over the coconut oil trend (it can end up blocking your pores!) but love using oil to take off your makeup- then beauty balms are a great mess-free alternative.

They come in solid form but immediately melt as you work them into your face, and are great if you have very dry skin.

This Body Shop Balm has chamomile extract in it and leaves the skin feeling ultra soft.

To get its full potential, use it with a makeup remover cloth for max makeup removal, or just use war water if you like not having to moisturise after. Although I would % use your standard face cleanser after this step (especially if you have oily skin!).

If you&#;re feeling like splurging, Neal&#;s Yard do a lovely wild rose beauty balm. It smells amazing and is primarily made up of wild rosehip oil &#; an antioxidant that helps repair, firm and smooth the skin. Rosemary seed oil also helps decongest the skin.

You can get that here

6. Muji Cleansing Oil

My first thought when seeing this product- wait Muji do skin care?? If it&#;s as good as their stationary (which Twitter swears if it is) then we are good to go!

What&#;s great about this oil is that it washes off with water, so if you&#;re worried about overdoing your cleansing routine and don&#;t like the feeling of cloth on your skin, then this may be the way forward!

If you don&#;t usually use cleansing oils, it works wonder for heavy (and drag!) makeup. So if you have oily skin maybe save it for a post big night out cleanse.

Its % plant based, fragrance free, paraben free and alcohol free!

Get this oil here.

7. The Soap Saver!

Finally, if you&#;re old fashioned and love your soap, then this is the dream. It&#;s a soap saver, a little bag made to put a used bar of soap into. So you don&#;t have to throw away the bar when it gets too small and slipper to use!

Made from cotton and hemp (all recycled materials), it turns any soap into a makeup remover. The material feels light on the skin and is easy to wash (it won&#;t shrink like polyester does!).

 You can buy it here

That&#;s it for this week! Till next week ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

AliExpress Face Halo Dupe for under 75p

Today is the second post of my year long AliExpress series, where I’ll be sharing AliExpress bargains here on my blog every single Saturday throughout There’s been so much hype about the Face Halo “original makeup remover”, I’ve been trying to find an AliExpress Face Halo dupe. If you’re new to the Face Halo, they’re circular cloths with non-toxic fibres which are designed to remove makeup to replace the need for makeup wipes.

AliExpress Face Halo Dupe for under 75p

The Face Halo Makeup Remover Pads are £ for three pads working out at £ per pad or you can purchase them individually for £7 from Boots. I managed to find an AliExpress Face Halo dupe for £ for three pads meaning they’re only 73 pence each which is a massive saving. The seller sells the pads individually for £but it’s much better value to purchase them in a trio.

AliExpress Face Halo Dupe for under 75p

I didn’t expect them to be as big as they are. They are much bigger than they look online, with a soft satin edge surrounding the pads with a super fluffy cotton fibre pad on both sides. The pads are very soft and feel very gentle on the skin, and I was a total sceptic that a pad could remove makeup without needing a makeup remover, and they’re impressively effective.

AliExpress Face Halo Dupe for under 75p

The pads remove makeup quickly and effectively without makeup remover, but they work well alongside cleanser too. Face Halo claim that one of their pads replace up to makeup wipes which is incredible, and obviously much better on the environment. I personally love using these AliExpress Face Halo dupe pads for removing swatches in-between blog photos. I usually swear by my Superdrug Micellar Wipes, but these pads are fab for quickly removing swatches without having to use a cleanser to remove them and it’s more gentle on the skin. They wash up nicely with a makeup brush cleanser, and it blows my mind that they’re only 75 pence each, I cannot recommend them enough.

You can purchase the makeup remover pads right here, from the same seller that I bought mine from.
