Need a new go-to to-go order? Here are 10 options from Wilmington-area restaurants.

In , take-out and delivery orders were an important part of local restaurant business. That trend will likely continue into

In news that should surprise no one, take-out and delivery sales spiked in

According to Nation’s Restaurant News, dinner orders were up 58% over pre-pandemic numbers. Lunch and breakfast orders are up, too, even though fewer adults may be going into the office.

Some of the most popular dishes are familiar I-want-to-eat-but-don’t-want-to-cook choices like chicken wings, salads, Asian food, sandwiches and (of course) pizza.

But making food that can survive the temperature changes and shake-ups that go along with a short car ride are tricky. Take French fries. According to GrubHub’s ‘Taste of ’ report they were the top side dish of the year. Most of us, though, have likely been disappointed in cold, soggy fries once we get home.

But eateries in the Wilmington area and elsewhere have been rethinking their menu so dishes are just as good (or better) upon unpacking. They’ve ordered special containers, or have adjusted menus to add more transit-friendly dishes.

With COVID cases on the rise, this kind of “off-premises” service is likely to continue through the winter months. Here are a few dishes to consider if you need take-out inspiration.

Kebab platter

These marinated chunks of beef, chicken (or a combination) available at Black Sea Grill ( S. Front St., Wilmington) come with to-go friendly side dishes like jasmine rice and a vegetable medley of carrot and cabbage. What’s better is that the servings are ample and the leftovers are just as good.

Stuffed Seafood Manicotti

Baked Manicotti

Some pastas and sauces are temperature sensitive, but others are heartier and sturdier. Maybe that’s one reason that baked manicotti was North Carolina’s favorite delivery dish in (It’s popularity was up almost % over deliveries, according to GrubHub.) This is the Stuffed Seafood Manicotti from D’s Italian Restaurant at Midway Rd SE in Bolivia.

Beef Bourguignon

Beef Bourguignon

It’s difficult to top classic French stews, like this one from Caprice Bistro (10 Market St., Wilmington) made with red wine, lardons, carrots and mushrooms. They just get better with time. This restaurant also offers a take-out menu with items like pate, charcuterie and macarons and a 15% discount for ordering online on their site.

Half-pineapple fried rice

Pineapple Fried Rice

Fried rice dishes are another popular and reliable option. But there’s an added benefit to this version from Salt Fish Restaurant and Tiki Bar at N. Lake Park Blvd in Carolina Beach. It comes in a half pineapple with shrimp, Chinese sausage, green onions and edamame. The whole thing can be popped into the microwave, if necessary, and the pineapple helps the dish retain moisture and texture.

T.I. Burrito Bowl

Burrito Bowls

Or any bowls, for that matter, can be take-out and delivery friendly, when compared to their bread-encased counterparts that can get soggy and unappetizing. These include poke bowls, smoothie bowls and breakfast bowls. Or these bowls from Burrito Shak, which has locations in Surf City, Hampstead and the Monkey Junction area of Wilmington. This is the veggie-friendly T.I. Bowl with rice, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, sweet chili slaw, guacamole and lime sour cream.

Fried chicken with sides

Fried Chicken

Not all fried foods hold up well for take-out. But that doesn’t stop us from ordering them. The spicy chicken sandwich was the top trending dish in the county in And items like wings and onion rings also topped the list. Fried chicken can be one of the exceptions. Little Pond Caterers, Inc. has been offering Fried Chicken Friday at their location at Princess Place in Wilmington. The chicken is packed with travel-friendly sides like apple slaw and mac-and-cheese, and you can also order a revamped version of Caesar salad, with dressing on the side.

Papaya salad

Thai Salads

Speaking of salads, some arrive limp and wilted thanks to being pre-dressed or packaged inappropriately. But delivery aficionados suggest trying salads at Asian restaurants. Because they are to-go specialists, they are often well-packed. And some Thai dishes use ingredients can be served cold, warm or room temperature. This choice from Umaii ( Market St.) in the Porters Neck area features shredded green papaya, green beans and tomatoes with a chili-garlic dressing.

Wurst platter

It’s hard to go wrong with sausages. And while they come in a variety of options and nationalities, The German Café ( Nutt St., Wilmington) in The Cotton Exchange offers a variety (brats, kielbasa, knockwurst) on a platter with equally to-go worthy sides like sauerkraut and German potato salad. Add a slice of strudel or cake to go with it.

Breakfast vegan tempeh hash

Vegan Breakfast Hash

The mother-and-daughter owners of Cafe Koa at N. Howe St. in Southport pride themselves on make to-go orders just as pretty as those you'd eat at the restaurant. Look for a number of vegan options and bowls. This is the breakfast vegan tempeh hash served over a bed of fried potatoes that holds the heat nicely. It's also good at room temperature.

Takeout friendly sushi

(Some) sushi

This is another dish that seems that it would be a great choice for take out. But sushi experts urge caution. It is traditionally meant to be enjoyed as it is made, after all. But Bento Box is one restaurant that carefully thought about what dishes would be best for travel and take-out. They recommend sashimi and riceless rolls, wrapped in cucumber for example, that can survive delivery and are just as good the next day, provided it is kept cold.
