Minecraft is full of possibilities already, such as the nearly limitless seeds that can affect the world. With mods, you can change your experience even further. There are many types of mods that add new weapons, resources, creatures, enemies, and game modes.
Do you want to learn how to install modpacks using Minecraft Forge? In this article, you’ll learn how to do that and identify common issues found during the process. We’ll also answer some questions related to modding in Minecraft.
Minecraft Forge How to Install Modpacks?
Vanilla Minecraft, or unmodded Minecraft, is the version everyone gets when they buy the game. There are no mods included with the game, so you need to download them. Before you can make the game support them, you need to download Forge.
Forge is an add-on for Minecraft: Java Edition which allows you to install the mods you downloaded and enable them. The version you download has to match your Minecraft client version, or else it may crash the game or make it malfunction. The mods you download must also match the right version number.
Installing Forge is very easy and shouldn’t take a lot of time.
Make Sure You Already Installed Minecraft Forge
If you haven’t installed Minecraft Forge yet, you can download it from the official site. Both Windows and Mac versions can be found on this website, so make sure you download the right version for the right operating system.
Follow these steps for the installation process on Windows:
- Download the Minecraft Forge installer for Windows from the official site.
- Run the installer once it’s done downloading.
- When you encounter a pop-up, select “Install Client” and wait for the process to complete.
- Launch Minecraft on your PC.
- Make sure the version at the left says “Forge” before selecting “Play.”
- When the game is fully generated, you can close it.
- Closing the game will allow the game to generate Forge files and folders for your mods.
If you play Minecraft on Mac instead, these are the instructions to follow:
- Download the Minecraft Forge installer for Mac from the official site.
- From your downloads folder, move the installer file to your desktop and execute it by double-clicking.
- Should you be prevented to open it, go to ‘’System Preferences’’, find the security settings, and find Forge.
- To the left of Forge, select “Open Anyway.”
- Click “Open Again” and now it will run.
- Once the installer is up and running, select “Install Client” just like on Windows.
- Launch Minecraft on your Mac.
- Make sure the version at the left says “Forge” before selecting “Play.”
- When the game is fully generated, you can close it.
- Closing the game will allow the game to generate Forge files and folders for your mods.
The process is straightforward. There’s no need to type commands for installation.
Once you have Forge installed, it’s time to browse for some mods.
Choose Your Minecraft Mod Version
Before you download any mods for Minecraft, you need to make sure the mod is made for the right version of Minecraft’s client. If you’re an update behind and still want to play, you need to download the mod corresponding to your version. For example, if you’re on 1.5.1, your mod has to be built for 1.5.1 as well.
Using the wrong version of any mod won’t work. The game will not load the mods, as Forge will notify you about the wrong version. To fix it, simply delete the mod from your folder and get the proper version instead.
Download a Mod for Minecraft Forge
You can download various Minecraft mods from many sites. Here are some common and popular ones:
Among all of these, CurseForge is the most popular option. You can find all sorts of mods on the website. As of the time of writing, there are 78,015 mods available for download.
There are many types of mods and modpacks too, including:
All of them help you experience things never possible with Vanilla Minecraft. Once you’ve downloaded the mods, you can start installing them. All mods come in files that you must place in the correct directory.
Locate the Minecraft Application Folder
The Minecraft folder is where you’ll drag and drop all the mod files required to change how you play. Instead of poking around in your hard drives, you can just follow these simple steps to locate it.
On Windows, you’ll do these steps:
- Ensure Minecraft isn’t running at all.
- In the search bar, type “” without the quotation marks and go to the folder with the same name.
- Scroll and look for the “.minecraft” folder.
- If you want to skip these steps in the future, just create a shortcut for it on your desktop for easy access.
If you’re playing on Mac, use these instructions:
- Ensure Minecraft is closed and not running.
- Locate the “Go” tab at the top of the screen.
- Select “Go to Folder.”
- Type in or past “” without the quotation marks.
- Select “Go” to reach the folder.
- Similarly, you can make a shortcut to the folder on your desktop if you want to access it quickly.
Once you’ve located the proper folder, it’s time to install the mods themselves.
Place the Mod You Downloaded in the Mods Folder
The mods can be in ZIP files that you need to unzip and decompress. After this, you’ll get a folder containing all the mods’ contents, usually all sorted within folders themselves. To install the mods, just drag them into the mods folder.
This is the case for both Windows and Mac.
- Drag and drop the mods into the corresponding mods folder.
- Launch Minecraft.
- Click “Play” and see if the mods are loaded.
- If there are no error messages, you should be able to enjoy the mods without a problem.
And that’s how you install mods using Minecraft Forge. The process isn’t confusing at all, right?
There are a few reasons why your game crashes after you install mods. It can be the wrong Forge version, a wrong mod version, duplicate mods, mods missing a few files, and more. If nothing seems to work, you can either reinstall all mods or reinstall Forge.
This might be time-consuming, but it’s the most effective way to brute-force your way through a problem. If you do manage to locate the problem, then don’t delete everything.
- Rejected from joining a server due to mods
This often happens when you’ve downloaded the wrong mod version, the server has the wrong version, or you’re missing a mod. If you can find the offending mod version, all you need to do is to install the proper version so you can access the server again. If you don’t own the server, contact the owner and notify them of the issue.
The owner might be willing to amend the mod version so everyone can enjoy the game on the server together.
This can happen if you have the wrong Forge version or aren’t running Forge at all. If you don’t see forge in the version number, then you’ll have to reinstall it. If the version is wrong, then install the right version that the server accepts.
- Can’t craft tools after installing mods
If you find yourself unable to craft tools with the proper ingredients, it could be that you have Bukkit plugins in your mods. You need to check which mods have them and remove them. Sometimes, it’s another mod that’s preventing you from crafting, which you must also remove.
How to Use Forge Mod Minecraft?
You only need to install Forge using the steps we discussed above. Forge will then allow you to use the mods you’ve downloaded and installed. There’s no need to touch Forge again unless you have the wrong version or a corrupt installation.
The mods change the game in various ways, giving you quests, new items, and more. After installing, you can ignore them as you play through the modded game.
Do You Need Forge for Modpacks?
No, you don’t need to install Forge for modpacks, even if it’s the most popular add-on for this. There is another similar add-on named Fabric which achieves the same purpose. Fabric is more minimalist but still manages to support many mods.
Guns and Quests in Minecraft
If you figured out how to install modpacks using Minecraft Forge, then you’re free to change the game radically. From outrageous mods to simpler ones like new materials, the sky’s the limit here. All you need are the right files and you can mod the game as you see fit.

With that out of the way, let’s look at the 10 best Minecraft modpacks you must install and play right away.
Best Modpacks in Minecraft (2021)
Before we list down the best Minecraft modpacks, you must be wondering – how are modpacks different from mods? Well, the name essentially gives it away, but let us clarify. Modpacks are a heavily sized and curated collection of different mods under a single theme or topic that you can install to elevate your Minecraft experience. Unlike mods, modpacks aim to change almost every aspect of the game. And even though most mods can work on any PC setup, many of these will require a medium or high-tier gaming PC for a playable experience.
As modpacks are limited to the Java Edition of the game, you can only expect them to work on Mac or Windows. Though there might be an easy way to get Minecraft Java on Chromebooks and experience the magic on your low-end school laptop as well. Once you have your platform sorted, head on to the first entry in our list of best modpacks for Minecraft.
1. RLCraft Minecraft Modpack

Not just realism in terms of textures or shaders, but in aspects beyond what you can imagine. It is a collection of 50+ mods to make Minecraft feel more life-like, covering everything from hooks to leaves. Going beyond graphics, the RLCraft modpack also makes the sounds feel more realistic.

If complex changes and learning new recipes don’t fit your playstyle, maybe this survival modpack will be more fun. As the name suggests, the Minecraft world you land in is infected by parasites, and they are turning villagers into deadly creatures. This zombie-style survival experience in Minecraft has always been a popular choice for players. What makes it even better than the general zombie-style story is the fact that the actual parasites and mobs are far scarier and challenging.

7. Advanced Wizardry
Are you a Potterhead like I am? If yes, this modpack is going to make you fall in love with itself. Even though the modpack doesn’t directly present itself as a Harry Potter mod, there are plenty of elements from the franchise. From phoenix to Dumbledore lookalikes, there’s a lot to look forward to. Just because the collection isn’t limited to the HP series, Advanced Wizardry also includes plenty more content to offer than regular magic modpacks.

9. World of Dragons Modpack
Dragons are entities you will find in several Minecraft modpacks, but this one gives them the attention they deserve. It is directly inspired by George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, the one that gave birth to the popular Game of Thrones TV series. Check out a list of the best Netflix TV series right here for more such recommendations.
The plot of this modpack is based around attempts to subdue dragons, using their carcasses for materials, connecting with the villagers, and doing tons of quests. You can use multiple magic and technology-based methods as well as a combination of the two to take down the dragons. We can easily conclude that World of Dragons offers more variety to dragons than any other modpack out there for Minecraft.

15 Best Minecraft Modpacks To Play In 2021
There are tons of cool modpacks that you can play in Minecraft, but you might be wondering: What is the best Minecraft modpack to play in 2021?
Every modpack has different objectives and gameplay. For example, in a skyblock pack there is no land in the game and you have to build on a floating island. In other packs, you might face fierce dragons in the main world. As you can see, the pack you pick is very important and will determine the type of game you play.
Getting Started With Minecraft Mods
Since modpacks are not included with the base game of Minecraft, you will have to download third-party launchers or manually install mod files. I recommend using the Feed The Beast (FTB) Launcher when playing modpacks made by FTB (a group of people that make modpacks) or the Curseforge/Overwolf launcher for other modpacks. The Twitch desktop app used to be a popular way to play modpacks, but this has been replaced by the Overwolf launcher.
READ MORE: 34 Cool Things to Build in Minecraft
The launchers make it very easy to play modpacks. You simply pick a pack from the list and it automatically installs the pack for you. Note that you will typically have to login with your real Minecraft username and password. This is safe when using reputable launchers such as CurseForge or FTB. Be cautious providing your Minecraft username and password to less popular launchers!
Each modpack runs on different versions of Minecraft (for example, 1.7, 1.10, 1.12, 1.16 etc). This is because every mod supports only certain versions of the game. The version that the pack runs on will have a big impact on the types of mods that are included.
Here is a list of the 13 best and most popular Minecraft modpacks to play in 2021:
1. SkyFactory 4
SkyFactory 4 (SF4) is definitely one of the most fun modpacks you can play in Minecraft. It is skyblock on steroids, and from the name you can probably guess what you will be doing. Building a factory in the sky of course!
You will start on a small chunk of land with a tree, which is standard for all skyblock maps. Next, you’ll have to progress through the pack to expand your island and obtain all the other items in the game. The progression will take you from getting resources from special trees, making a mob farm, and generating power.
It’s quite different from Sky Factory 3 (SF3), for example there is no more sifting for resources. The majority of resources are obtained from trees in this version and there’s also no draconic evolution. There are many different variations of skyblock, however SkyFactory 3 and 4 are the most popular variants.
SkyFactory 4 is definitely worth checking out if you want to play a Minecraft modpack in 2021. For more information on Sky Factory 4, the makers of Minecraft have made a nice post going over it. The official download page can be found here, or you can use the CurseForge launcher to download and play it.
2. Stoneblock 2 (FTB)
Stoneblock 2 (SB2) is similar to skyblock or SkyFactory, but it’s kind of the opposite. Instead of building in a totally empty world in the sky, you are building in a world filled with stone and you have to carve out a base.
It can be annoying mining the stone in the beginning, but once you get an RFTools Builder it gets much easier to dig out massive amounts of stone. Personally, I have found this to be a very fun modpack to play and definitely recommend trying it.
This pack makes use of the Project E mod, which can be somewhat overpowered as it lets you trade most items for other items (using the EMC system). For example, you can exchange 100 stone for 100 EMC, then use this EMC to purchase other items like diamonds or iron. The pack also includes Draconic Evolution, which unlocks a ton of end-game content to keep you busy.
READ MORE: 10 Cool Minecraft Houses To Build In Survival
Once you accumulate a lot of EMC, the game feels a bit like creative mode since you can instantly obtain nearly all items in the game. However, the EMC system can be nice because it allows you to trade your “junk” for EMC and buy more valuable things like diamonds.
A very cool idea for a base in this game is to use the Builder to hollow out a big dome, then use the luminous blocks to make a fake sky, clouds, and sun. This process is fully automated with the Builder block, and you don’t have to manually break and place all the blocks.
If you’re asking yourself Which Minecraft modpack should I play in 2021, I highly recommend Stoneblock 2. As one of my favorite modpacks, I have also made a nifty Stoneblock 2 guide to help you with some starter tips. To play this pack, download the using the official FTB launcher on their website.
3. RLCraft Modpack
This “real life” style Minecraft modpack features more realistic graphics and very challenging gameplay. This pack is a good choice for veteran players who are bored of plain old Minecraft and want to change up their gameplay drastically.
Many basic mechanics get changed in this pack to make the game more challenging. There can be dragons flying around in the main world and you could be killed in one shot just walking around! Don’t believe me? Just check out the video above for a sneak peak of what you can expect. This pack is not for the faint hearted and the creator even warns players that “they will die… alot”.
Despite being so challenging, RLCraft is one of the most popular Minecraft modpacks. In fact, as of February 2021 it was the most downloaded modpack of all time on CurseForge, with 6.9 million downloads. Are you ready for the Minecraft challenge of your life? RLCraft can be downloaded here.
4. Infinity Evolved (FTB)
FTB Infinity Evolved (IE) is a “kitchen sink” modpack, meaning it is a general all-purpose modpack that can facilitate many gameplay styles. It has most of the popular Minecraft mods and two difficulty modes: normal and expert.
Infinity Evolved Expert Mode is a way to prolong gameplay by making recipes more difficult. You will need way more blocks and items to craft things, which makes the pack take longer to progress through. If you find you’re finishing modpacks too quickly, you should definitely look into IE expert mode.
This pack is best if you want more freedom to do whatever you want. For example, with the SkyFactory 4 modpack, you have to build a floating island base and there is no other choice. With this pack, there are so many cool things you can build in Minecraft (that aren’t floating island bases). Since this is a Feed The Beast (FTB) modpack, it can be played and downloaded using the official FTB launcher.
5. Valhelsia 3
Most modpacks are running on older versions of Minecraft, however Valhelsia 3 runs on Minecraft 1.16 which is the latest version of the game (as of Feb 2021, when this article was last updated). This means that you will have more up-to-date content in Minecraft, but some popular mods will be missing since they run on older versions. For example, some popular mods missing from this pack include: Draconic Evolution, Tinker’s Construct, and EnderIO.
You will still find a lot of great mods in this pack, including some of my favorites: Botania, Biomes O’ Plenty, and Immersive Engineering. If you are wanting to try out a more updated version of Minecraft while still having mods, Valhelsia 3 is a great option for you. This modpack can be downloaded on the CurseForge launcher or on their CurseForge page here.
6. Regrowth (FTB)
Regrowth is a themed pack with a questline that guides you through the objectives of the pack. The general theme is that you start in a wasteland world and you have to progress to “regrow” the world back. This pack can be a unique twist for players who like to “rebuild” the world, like in skyblock packs.
Progression in this pack is definitely a bit slower and the mobs can be stronger, so this pack can be more challenging to play through. Since the progression is slower than most other packs, you’ll also get more hours of entertainment out of this pack. It will also be more difficult to defend yourself against monsters since it will be slower to get the proper equipment to defend yourself.
Regrowth is a Feed The Beast (FTB) Modpack, and can be played using the launcher downloaded from their website.
7. Project Ozone 3
Project Ozone 3 (PO3) is another skyblock-like map that incorporates different recipe difficulties (like the infinity evolved pack). There’s normal mode, titan mode, and kappa mode, each progressively more difficult.
There are a few different map types to try with this pack, including Skylands, Garden of Glass, Frozen, etc. I personally prefer SF4 for skyblock, but if you want a more challenging version of skyblock try out PO3. This pack can be downloaded here or played via the CurseForge launcher.
8. Agrarian Skies 2 Modpack
Agrarian Skies 2 (AS2) is a quest and objective based skyblock. If you are brand new to Minecraft mods, this pack would be great to learn the basics. The quest book will guide you through the progression step by step.
A major difference between this pack and SF4 is that there is no Mystical Agriculture mod. That makes this pack a bit more difficult and less overpowered. With Mystical Agriculture in SF4, you can “grow” nearly all items in the game, including diamonds, obsidian, wither skeleton skulls, etc. In this pack, you will have to do it the old fashioned way and get your diamonds from sifting and obsidian from lava and water.
This is not a FTB pack, so you will need to download the Minecraft modpack here or use the CurseForge launcher.
9. Revelation (FTB)
Revelation is another “kitchen sink” pack, similar to the Infinity Evolved pack. This is a newer pack which runs on the 1.12 version of the game (whereas infinity evolved runs on 1.7), so the mods will be different. It includes newer mods that might not have been around when Infinity Evolved was made, and doesn’t include older mods that were not updated for the 1.12 version.
It is the largest modpack made by FTB, with over 200 mods included. You may need a more powerful computer to fully enjoy this pack and all the mods it offers.
This pack is good if you’re looking for an all-purpose pack that doesn’t have limitations on what you can do. However, if you’re new to modding, the 200 mods may be overwhelming and make it difficult to learn how to play.
As this is a Feed The Beast (FTB) modpack, it can be played and downloaded using the official FTB launcher.
10. Farming Valley Modpack
Farming Valley is a modpack inspired by Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley. If you’ve played either of these games and liked them, definitely check out the Farming Valley Minecraft modpack.
In this pack, you will build up a town and plant/harvest/sell crops for money to progress. Farming in this pack is tweaked and will be more challenging than in vanilla Minecraft. The Harvest Goddess NPC (which you have to summon at the beginning) will guide you through progression in this pack.
To download and play this pack, visit the CurseForge page here or use their launcher.
11. DireWolf20 (FTB)
DireWolf20 is a popular YouTuber and this pack is essentially a collection of the mods used in his videos. It is another general all-purpose kitchen sink pack that has gotten quite popular.
A benefit of playing with this pack is you can watch his videos, play along, and learn the mods.
As this is a Feed The Beast (FTB) modpack, it can be played and downloaded using the official FTB launcher.
12. Sky Adventures (FTB)
Sky Adventures is another skyblock map that is similar to SkyFactory, but has slightly different mods.
One major difference is that this pack has the Project E mod (like Stone Block 2). This mod allows you to trade items for other items using a currency called EMC.
If you’ve played Stoneblock 2 before and enjoyed the Project E aspect of it, but would prefer a skyblock map, Sky Adventures would be a good choice to play. The download page can be found here.

13. Forever Stranded Modpack
Forever Stranded (FS) is kind of similar to the Regrowth pack in that you play in a “wasteland” kind of map. You start in a crashed plane and have to quickly defend yourself because the mobs at night are much more challenging than in normal Minecraft.
Although Forever Stranded is a little bit older, but it’s still worth trying out if you’ve already played all the other packs. The download page can be found here.
14. Beyond (FTB)
FTB Beyond is another kitchen sink general purpose modpack that runs on the 1.10 version of Minecraft. It’ll have slightly different mods than Revelation and Direwolf20 (which run on 1.12 and 1.16 respectively) and Infinity Evolved (which runs on 1.7).
If you are an experienced modded Miencraft player, you can go through the mod list to see which pack has the most of your favorite mods included. If you are a newer modded player, it may be better to start with other more popular packs like Infinity Evolved, or a pack that is progression based to teach you the packs like Agrarian Skies 2.

15. SevTech: Ages
SevTech: Ages is a modpack based on 1.12 and it is heavily progression based. Content is gated into different “ages” and you must progress through each age to unlock content. New recipes become available, new mobs appear, and new ores appear as you advance ages.
This pack is not your typical “kitchen sink” modpack and it is quite unique from the other packs. The download page can be found here.

Packs minecraft mod
Modpacks (short for mod packages, or modification packages) are packages of mods. Over fifteen thousand modpacks for Minecraft currently exist, all with various themes. Virtually all modpacks use mods created for the Java Edition.
Due to how complex configuring mods to work together was, modpacks were created. One of the earliest modpacks was Technic, which was released in Beta 1.7. After being spotlighted by The Yogscast, it became very popular, and inspired further modpacks as well as the Technic launcher.
Over time, other platforms arose, including Feed The Beast and ATLauncher. Many, perhaps even most, players of modded Minecraft use modpacks rather than downloading and configuring mods manually.
Originally, most modpacks were "kitchen sink" modpacks; they included a number of mods designed to work together, but nothing more. Various modpacks with themes, custom maps, and goals rose over time, such as Feed The Beast Retro, Agrarian Skies, Infinity and Blightfall. Hardcore Questing Mode and similar mods have been frequently used to give modpacks a goal or a storyline.
The original Technic modpack and sequel modpacks did not include express permission from the mod authors to redistribute their mods. This later became a problem when SirSengir introduced malicious code to make the Vindictive Bee destroy blocks around it when the mod jar was inside a "technic" folder. Later modpack platforms, including Feed The Beast and ATLauncher, required all modpacks to have permission from all mods inside their modpacks. Due to Curse, Inc. having permission to distribute all mods uploaded to CurseForge, all CurseForge modpacks created through mods hosted on CurseForge automatically have permission.
Although the legal status of modpacks requiring permission to distribute their mods has never been challenged in court, the general consensus is that it is legally required. Because mods are derivative works of Minecraft, Mojang has the right to regulate them. However, they still can be released under licenses that restrict distribution. Additionally, the use of mods without having express permission is generally seen as unethical in the modded community, although mod authors using restrictive licenses is also commonly frowned upon.
