How to Align a Dish Network Satellite Dish to 110 and 119

If you have Dish Network satellite television service, you may need to calibrate your home receiver so it points in the right direction to receive the broadcast signal. The appropriate satellite for your home depends your location and the type of receiver. No matter where you live, you will follow the same calibration process. You will have the option of selecting the correct satellite when you go through the receiver's Setup menu.

Adjust the elevation of your dish to match the proper alignment for your ZIP code. Consult your owner's manual or visit the links in the Resources section to find the correct orientation for satellite dishes in your ZIP code. If you have a Dish 500, you must also set the skew of the dish to the correct angle. The skew is the amount of rotation that is necessary to align this type of dish.

Turn on the Dish Network receiver inside your home. Press the "Menu" button on your remote control and select "System Setup." Choose "Installation" from the list of options and select "Check Switch." Press "Check" to start the diagnostic process. The screen will list certain configuration settings pertaining to your dish. Move the check mark next to Satellite 119 and press "OK" to display the signal meter.

Ask a friend to watch the signal meter while you adjust the position of the dish or move your television to a location you can see from the dish. Use cellphones to relay the calibration information back and forth to your friend if the dish is too far away to communicate by shouting. If you are working by yourself and cannot see the television, you may need to use other technological assistance to view the signal meter, such as placing a webcam in front of the television and streaming the picture to your smartphone.

Unscrew the locking clamps that hold the dish in position. Tilt the dish as necessary to increase the strength level shown on the signal meter. Try to achieve the highest signal level possible on the meter. Any reading above 70 should give you adequate signal strength to watch television, but the quality may be poor, unless you can reach a higher range. When you are satisfied with the alignment of the dish, tighten the locking clamps to secure it.

Return to the "Check Switch" screen and move the check mark next to Satellite 110 to test the signal strength from this satellite. Repeat the calibration process from the previous step until you reach a signal strength of at least 70. Press "Cancel" to exit the Setup menu.

Tips

Make sure your satellite dish is installed according to Dish Network's specifications. There must be an unobstructed path for the dish to receive the signal from Dish's satellites.

Warnings

Do not attempt to adjust the satellite dish on your own if it is located on the roof. Stay safe by calling a qualified technician to help you calibrate the dish.

I am in Florida and although the scale goes up to 125, I range from 60-70. Clear LOS.

When I had a 4300 SD receiver for a CRT TV, the scale went to 125, signal strength was always around 90 and video cut off was 25. When I purchased a HDTV and got a HD 211k receiver, the highest number I've seen is 58. With heavy rain and the signal drops to 15, I lose signal. Each receiver model has it's own software for measuring signal with it's own video cut off point. Higher signal strength does not improve picture quality. It's not like old antenna and analog and getting a snowy [noisy] signal. With digital it's yes or no. Your receiver getting 60-70 is considered very good.
When it rains, the colors on weather radar determine if you get signal or not. If red or orange is approaching, you will lose signal. To receive signal through red and orange rain clouds, you would need the size of the dishes at the Comcast office. btw- the elevation setting of your dish where it is pointing is not where the satellites are located. The arm of the dish is your elevation. Look up an additional 12-15 degrees for actual location of sats. Whether you use the east or west arc sats, they are over the equator, 22,300 miles up.

In order to get above the 90's you need to fine tune your antenna. Whoever installed it may have not taken the time to do so or it moved with the wind. If there's a clear line of sight to the satellites (no obstructions), there should be no problem. You could call Dish and complain of a weak signal and see if they send someone out free of charge. I have installed many satellite dishes over the years and even worked with the old C-Band back in the day. Since you are in Florida I would suspect the antenna was not tightened up enough and moved around with the gusty winds or a storm. You could do it yourself with a meter but why bother, since you are paying for it call and complain.

Satellite Finder / Dish Alignment Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com

This website is a good tool to help you make sure your dish is properly aligned. I use it on the campus where I work when the grass cutters spin my satellite dishes around with their mowers.

A reasonable signal strength is between 50 and 80. If it is lower than that range, you are either pointing into an object (e.g. trees, shrubs, or structures) or pointing above or below the satellite. Your satellite dish installation position must have a clear view angle of the satellite you are trying to receive.
