Nightfall

This article is about the level. For the digital feature, see Halo: Nightfall. For the armor set, see Nightfall armor. For the Halo: Reach track, see Nightfall (music).

Move in behind enemy lines and evaluate the opposition.

Nightfall is the fourth campaign level of Halo: Reach.[1]

Summary[edit]

The mission involves Noble Six and Noble Three engaging in a recon mission on Covenant forces in the colloquially named "Dark Zone", a Covenant-occupied region in the Viery Territory. They first eliminate a few guards posts, and then encounter a native creature of Reach, the Gúta. They then meet a few militia troopers attempting to recover smuggled UNSC weaponry at a waterfront. The militia troopers tell the Spartans about a hydro plant further into the dark zone. At the hydro plant, they discover a Covenant stealth pylon, which Jun places a remote detonator charge on after a few firefights. After proceeding further into the dark zone and eliminating the Covenant troops in the area, the two Spartans discover a Covenant invasion force and a landing zone. Kat receives the visual and tells them to retreat so they will be prepared for the next day.

Transcript[edit]

{Cutscene}

Fades in on a cliffside at night. Reach's moons, Csodaszarvas and Turul, are hanging in the night sky.

26:30 Hours

A Phantom dropship flies by with its search light on. Jun-A266 emerges from a concealed position behind a rock as the dropship passes. He signals to Noble Six with his head. Six follows him along the cliff edge.

Six joins Jun at a cliffside overlooking over a mountainside.

  • Jun-A266: "Copy that. (chuckles) When Kat runs an op, direct action is always necessary."
Jun passes a magazine of sniper rounds to Six.

Jun hands Six a magazine of 14.5×114mm sniper rounds.

  • Jun-A266: "Here. You may need these. High velocity, armor-piercing. They'll take the hat off an Elite at two thousand yards. And they ain't cheap."

Jun and Six head further along the ledge, Jun reaches a boulder and starts to climb it.

  • Jun-A266: "Hmm. I'll be in touch."

Noble Six slides down the ledge to the ground below. Cuts to his/her point of view as he/she reaches the ground.

{Gameplay}

...Too Quiet[edit]

Infiltrate the Covenant dark zone and determine the Covenant's combat capabilities.

Another Phantom dropship flies pass Six with its search light turned on.

  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Recon Bravo, the sector ahead is dark to electronic surveillance."
  • Jun-A266: "Covenant can block our instruments?"
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "So it would seem, and Command wants to know what they're hiding."

Six heads up along another ledge. A Sangheili stands watch over the area, back facing them, while a few Unggoy sleep nearby.

  • Jun-A266: "Elite. He's yours, do it quiet."

Noble Six assassinates the Sangheili quietly using a combat knife or by breaking its neck.

Six eliminates the Unggoy and continues forward, eventually reaching a Covenant-controlled complex.

  • Jun-A266: "Recon Bravo to Noble Two, stand by for contact report."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Standing by to copy, over."
  • Jun-A266: "We have eyes on multiple hostiles patrolling a settlement. This what we're looking for, Kat?"
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Negative, too small, you're not in the dark zone yet. Engage at your own discretion, but keep moving."
  • Jun-A266: "You heard her, Six. Drop those tangos."

If the player engages before Kat responds:

  • Jun-A266: "Already engaged."
A Phantom arrives as Recon Team Bravo advances.

After eliminating a few of the Covenant troops, a Phantom shows up.

  • Jun-A266: "Incoming. Looks like we really pissed them off."

Jun and Six eliminate the rest of the Covenant in the area and continue on a trail behind the buildings, going further into the complex, soon finding an area with more Covenant troops.

  • Jun-A266: "We got hostiles near."

The Covenant in the area are quickly eliminated. Jun and Six find a trail leading away, with still more Covenant troops advancing.

  • Jun-A266: "Visual on targets."

After dealing with the enemy troops, Jun and Six continue down the trail.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie[edit]

Move on from the settlement by taking the southern path out of the silo area.

Jun and Six reach a clearing where some enormous native creatures are attacking Covenant troops. A Phantom dropship hovers overhead, pointing its searchlight at the creatures.

  • Jun-A266: "Look at that!"
Six fires his weapon at the charging Gúta.

After laying waste to the Covenant, the creatures notice Jun and Noble Six, and begin to charge them.

  • Jun-A266: "Major enemy, incoming."

The creatures take sustained gunfire from both Jun and Six, but eventually fall.

  • Jun-A266: "Kat, pick any of that up?"
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Affirmative, Recon Bravo. It's an indigenous creature, called Gúta."

Jun and Six continue on, soon finding another trail.

  • Jun-A266: "Six, there's a trail up ahead through the rocks. Let's take it."

While taking the trail they come across several Moa. Soon they hear gunfire.

  • Jun-A266: "Gunfire. Magnums. Security sidearms, standard issue."

The trail opens up to a pumping station. Several militia are under attack by Covenant forces.

  • Jun-A266: "Noble Two, we're at some sort of pump station. Got eyes on civilians, I'm thinking more local militia. They've engaged hostiles."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Move to assist. They may have intel we need."
  • Jun-A266: "You heard her, Six. Keep those civilians alive."
  • Militia trooper: "Give us a hand! Bastards just keep comin'."

If civilians die anywhere between now and end of level:

  • Jun-A266: "Recon Bravo to Noble Two. We've lost the civilians."

After the Covenant troops in the area are eliminated, the group gathers around a couple briefcases.

  • Militia trooper: "Little more action than we're used to. You Spartans are good in a fight."
  • Jun-A266: "What are you doing here? Whole area's supposed to be evacuated."
  • Militia trooper: "Didn't like leaving it to someone else to protect our home. So we came back, for this. (indicates briefcases) We have 'em hidden all over the territory."
The troopers reveal the weapons inside the cases.

The briefcases open electronically to reveal various UNSC weapons.

  • Jun-A266: "You know this stuff is stolen?"
  • Militia trooper: "What? You gonna arrest me?"
  • Jun-A266: "No. Gonna steal it back."

A Phantom shows up, and the group moves to defensive positions.

  • Jun-A266: "Another dropship coming in."

After dealing with the hostiles, a second Phantom shows up.

  • Jun-A266: "We've got company."

After eliminating the hostiles, yet another Phantom shows up.

  • Jun-A266: "More inbound."

Eventually, they eliminate the final wave.

  • Jun-A266: "Nothing here but that lake."

If at least one militia trooper is still alive:

  • Militia trooper: "Road leads to a hydro-electric plant, but the gate doesn't work."
  • Jun-A266: "Alternate route?"
  • Militia trooper: "We use the riverbed to smuggle rations, weapons..."
  • Jun-A266: "Basically anything the UNSC considers contraband."
  • Militia trooper: "Basically."

If all militia troopers have been killed:

  • Jun-A266: "No movement. Nothing else alive, human or Covenant. Nothing here but that lake. Kat, where are we going?"
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "There's a hydroelectric plant nearby."
  • Jun-A266: "Front gate looks locked. Is there another way in?"
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Stand by, I'll check with Recon Alpha. Jorge said settlers dammed a nearby river. There's a (unintelligible) - a dry river - that might be your best route."
  • Jun-A266: "Copy. Thanks."

The Spartans follow a militia trooper to the riverbed.

The militia troopers lead Jun and Six to the riverbed. If the troopers are dead, the Spartans continue on their own.

  • Jun-A266: "There's the riverbed, Six. Let's see where it goes."

The Spartans continue down the riverbed.

  • Jun-A266: "Where does this riverbed lead?"
  • Militia trooper: "Straight to the hydro plant. We dammed this river up forty-five years ago. Plant powers every settlement in the territory. Shame if it all gets wasted."
  • Jun-A266: "Doing what we can."

A Phantom passes overhead.

  • Jun-A266: "Hold up. Covie dropship, take cover."

The Phantom passes by them.

  • Jun-A266: "OK, clear. Let's move."

I'll Just Leave This Here...[edit]

Use the dammed riverbed to the northeast of the pump station to reach the hydroelectric plant.

They continue on, eventually reaching the plant, which is under Covenant control. A Covenant stealth pylon is seen near the plant.

  • Jun-A266: "Kat, are you seeing this? Covenant structure, kind of a big pylon. Heavily fortified."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "That's the source of our dark zone."
  • Jun-A266: "OK...consider it gone."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Negative, stick a remote det charge on it. Command's planning something big, they say that pylon ties it down."
  • Militia Trooper: "We gonna blow it?"
  • Jun-A266: "We're gonna clear the area, and I'm gonna plant a remote det charge. You want to provide some cover, go right ahead."

They neutralize the guards on the bridge, attracting the attention of the other Covenant in the area.

After eliminating the Covenant forces in the area, Jun heads for one of the pylon's legs.

  • Jun-A266: "All clear, Six. This is gonna take a minute, keep your eyes peeled."
Jun prepares to fight a pair of Mgalekgolo.

A Phantom shows up and drops off a pair of Mgalekgolo, followed by another Phantom with a Sangheili Spec-Ops team.

  • Jun-A266: "We've got big targets coming. Covenant dropship inbound!"

Noble Six eventually defeats them while Jun continues to work on the remote detonator.

  • Jun-A266: "Recon Bravo to Noble Two, charge placed."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Somewhere inconspicuous, I hope?"
  • Jun-A266: "Stuck it inside the pylon's power supply."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Alright. Keep pushing into the dark zone. Command wants to know what the Covenant are hiding."
  • Jun-A266: "There's a gate to the southeast of the hydro plant."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Copy. Uploading security codes to you now."

The team reaches the gate.

  • Jun-A266: "Okay, got 'em. Unlocking the gate."

Jun accesses the control panel and opens the gate.

  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Recon Bravo, you're heading into the dark zone now."

The Spartans and the surviving militia head through the gate. A Phantom holds position nearby. The human forces engage more Covenant troops almost immediately.

  • Jun-A266: "Phantom, too close for comfort."
Jun and Six fighting Covenant inside the dark zone.

They advance further, engaging more Covenant troops and a Shade turret.

  • Jun-A266: "Shade! Fire and maneuver, Six. Hit' em from the side."

After neutralizing the Shade, they advance further. Multiple Banshees start flying overhead.

  • Jun-A266: "Lotta air traffic around here, Six. I think we're getting warm."

As they advance further in, they encounter more Covenant troops and several more Shades. Soon, a SDV-class heavy corvette is seen holding position on the other side of the rock wall.

  • Jun-A266: "Noble Two, we have eyes on at least one Covenant ship."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Solid copy. Don't stop now."

Eventually, the Spartans and militia clear the area of hostiles.

or

  • Jun-A266: "We are done here."

They head to a cliff side at the end of the trail.

{Cutscene}

Six and Jun looking at the landing zone.

Jun and Six go prone and crawl forward towards a cliff edge. A Covenant Tyrant is standing in front of a massive Covenant landing zone. Two Covenant corvettes hold position nearby. Additionally, two Covenant Spires are seen far away.

  • SPARTAN-B312: "Transmitting visual."
  • Jun-A266: "You seeing this, Kat?"
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Confirmed. Receiving Noble Three and Noble Six's live visual of a Covenant strike force."
  • Jun-A266: "That's no strike force, it's an invading army. If we're gonna smother this thing, we need to go in hard and fast."
  • Catherine-B320 (COM): "Agreed. All recon teams disengage and fall back. Sun will be up in a few hours...and it's going to be a very busy day."

Fade to black.

Level ends.

Achievements[edit]

The following achievements can be unlocked on Nightfall across the Xbox 360 and Halo: The Master Chief Collection editions of Halo: Reach.

Trivia[edit]

Glitches[edit]

  • Jun is known to accidentally shoot the player if he/she assassinates the target he is firing at, dealing immense amounts of damage to the player's health or even outright killing him/her. That is because the friendly AI regards the enemies that are assassinated as being alive until the player finishes the animation, and Sniper Rifle rounds can penetrate opponents.
  • After the encounter in the pumping station, the player takes a path that is inhabited by Moas. However, as the next area loads, the Moas will be erased from the level, even when in sight of the player.
  • By exiting a Forklift when it is parked next to the locked gate at the Stealth Pylon, a player can jump straight through the gate after a few tries, skipping the Hunter encounter. The next area will be entirely devoid of enemies; the player can then simply sprint to the end of the level. This is a very useful glitch when playing on Legendary. The ending cutscene will also feature two different tracks being played at once. Furthermore, the Tyrant will not be seen in the area. Note that this will not work on cooperative play.

References[edit]

  • The chapter "...Too Quiet" is a reference to the cliché phrase, "It's quiet... Too quiet." This phrase was previously referenced in the second chapter of the Halo: Combat Evolved level The Silent Cartographer, "It's Quiet...".
  • The chapter "I'll Just Leave This Here..." is a reference to the internet meme "i'm just going to leave this here", which is "commonly used as a title or intro to a blog/forum post, followed by an image or video (usually of a humorous nature)",[2] and in the game, Jun leaves an explosive charge on the pylon.

Miscellaneous[edit]

  • A section of this level is a night-time version of the multiplayer map Powerhouse, with some notable differences such as the Stealth Pylon being absent in the multiplayer version.
  • This is the only level that features a Gúta, one of Reach's native species.
  • This is the last level to feature Moa.
  • This is the only level in any of the games to feature the Colonial Militia.
  • The Sniper Rifle given to Noble Six at the start of the mission has more ammunition capacity than normal. This is mission-specific only, as Nightfall is primarily a sniper mission. This is similar to the mission Truth and Reconciliation from Halo: Combat Evolved, in which John-117 uses a Sniper Rifle with above-normal ammunition capacity. The player's secondary weapon also has increased capacity, though this is often overlooked. However, in co-op, the ammunition is at normal capacity.
  • The Firefight map Waterfront is based on a section of this level.
  • The Dreaming Grunt can be found on this level.
  • The actual date is not given at the start of the level, just the time. However, the next level, which begins the next morning, takes place on August 12, making Nightfall take place on the night of August 11.
  • When you reach the stealth pylon, the two Sangheili Minor have a special pointing animation as they overlook the pylon and the surrounding area. This is a detail many overlook as they just kill the Sangheili Minor's before they notice.

Gallery[edit]

  • Concept art of Noble Six brandishing a combat knifeduring Nightfall.

  • Noble Six assassinates a Sangheili in a Pre-Alpha build of the game.

  • The first Covenant outpost in the Alpha build of the game.

  • Preview of the level in Halo: Reach menu.

  • Jun and Six wielding sniper rifles.

  • Six and Jun following the riverbed.

  • Jun and Six come across a Covenant stealth pylon.

  • A Sangheili General watching over the encampment at the stealth pylon.

  • The Spartans and militia troopers in combat.

  • Noble Six stands guard while Jun plants an explosive on the stealth pylon's power supply.

  • A Phantom arrives at the stealth pylon to deploy reinforcements.

Halo Reach: Mission 3 Nightfall Guide

A list of general tactics to use for the legendary difficulty, as well as level specific tips that will help minimize or skip the most difficult parts of the game.

General Tactics

  • On missions where you have Noble team allies, always let them push up in front of you and grab most of the attention. They can’t die, so don’t feel too bad.
  • Abuse the noob combo. Always carry a Plasma Pistol unless I specify otherwise. There’s no reason not to, and you’ll just be making things harder for yourself by not doing it. And always carry a weapon capable of an instant headshot kill in your other slot. That means a DMR, Needle rifle, Magnum, or hell, a Sniper Rifle. Whenever you encounter an Elite, dip behind the nearest cover, charge your Plasma Pistol, pop out and shoot them, then quickly switch to your headshot weapon and tap them once on the head. If you don’t use this combo, you’ll be wasting ammo and time on Elites, both of which are valuable on legendary.
  • Use headshot weapons for all the normal infantry. Tap grunts on the head once or twice and they die. Always aim for the exposed hand on the left of a Jackal shield, then tap them on the head while they’re reeling. Optimally, this means that you’ll be using 1-2 rounds on Grunts and 2 rounds on Jackals.
  • Find a piece of cover and stay back. More times than not, there’s no reason to push in. You can almost always take out most of the enemies from a safe distance with your precision weapons.
  • Brutes are hilariously weak, and you should consider replacing the Plasma Pistol with the Needler and the DMR with the Needle Rifle on areas where they’re the dominant enemy. That means all of Exodus, the hospital in New Alexandria, and the final wave defense segment in Pillar of Autumn. Since they’re mostly unshielded, you can kill one with 6 Needler rounds or three body shots with the Needle Rifle. Note that the DMR tends to take 1-2 headshots to pop their helmet off, and 1 more headshot to kill. The Needle Rifle is just as efficient except you need to aim a whole lot less.
  • Grab the drop shield when you can, and use sprint otherwise. Other than some very niche situations, there’s very little reason to use the other abilties.

Mission 3: Nightfall

This is the easiest mission of the bunch by far. Just run past everything. A direct route is hard to describe, so just watch and follow this video (all credit to RC master). The only tricky part is the forklift skip, and even then you’re guaranteed to get it eventually. Practice on easy first if you’re antsy.

Halo: Reach Nightfall bug
So I completed the nightfall mission on legendary in both co-op and in solo. Yet the game shows that I have not completed it. Does anybody know if this is a bug or some sort of error? I would greatly appreciate the help.

The Tru7h about Mythicfall

The "tru7h" is... it's the Floodgate of Halo: Reach. Come on. You knew there had to be one. For those of you who need to be brought up to speed on exactly what that means, allow me to elaborate.
In Halo 3, Floodgate was considered to be BY FAR the easiest mission in the game. There were a number of factors that played into this point of view. It could be conquered in under five minutes. You could get through the entire mission without killing a single enemy. And of course, the Flood were (for the most part) a complete pushover in Halo 3 overall. There were even contests help to see who could zip through it the fastest. Yes, it was that simple.
In Halo 3: ODST, the "New Floodgate" became Uplift Reserve. Yet again, we were presented with a mission which could be conquered in under five minutes (three minutes in fact!), and could be done without killing a single enemy, leaving little to no major conflict from start to finish. In fact, I accidentally received a Vidmaster achievement on my first successful completion on this mission due to not killing any enemies in the process of racing through on a Ghost!
In Reach, Nightfall just happens to be that mission. It's not quite as carefree or forgiving as the previous two. There are a few enemies you'll need to kill in order to complete the "speed run" successfully, but they're typically pushovers and require very little effort to conquer.
For the sake of organization, we have the following chapters:

  1. Too Quiet...
  2. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
  3. I'll Just Leave This Here...

    And let the race begin!

Too Quiet...

This mission brings a lot of Halo Combat Evolved nostalgia to the table. In many ways, it reflects Truth & Reconciliation all the way from the nighttime setting to the rocky cliff-side environment. You even start the mission off with a sniper rifle packed with tons of extra ammunition. In Combat Evolved, though, you had the upper hand. Your enemies couldn't snipe back...
When the mission begins, you'll find yourself clinging to the cliff wall of a towering plateau with Reach's awe-inspiring night sky dominating the background. In the center, a beautiful ring world casts its celestial light on the path ahead.
As you round the next bend, you'll find an Elite Ultra standing at attention with a small group of enemies patrolling below. Jun, the sniper of the group, instructs you to land an assassination. For once, we're going to listen, though you'll need to be careful when doing it. If you make too much noise, you'll awaken the Grunts nearby. Not a big deal, but the more quietly you can sneak around without being spotted, the smoother things will go.
There are two ways you can pull this off. If you simply tap him out, it will end his life quickly and without repercussion. However, if you're just itching to land that Yoink move, then be sure to jump up first and come down on him from above. This will cause your Spartan to stomp on his head, keeping him from letting lose a bellowing death scream. Then you can sneak up the sides of the elevated rock and assassinate the two remaining Grunts without alerting the enemies lurking below. Here's a visual demonstration.

Things are about to speed up. As you round the next bend you'll find yourself looking down on an enemy encampment; a human settlement that has fallen into Covenant hands. It'll be patrolled by several Ranger Elites wielding the new focus rifle as well as several Grunt Ultras and a blood-craving Elite General wearing striking gold armor. Now, you could take the time to try picking them off with your spotless, new sniper rifle if you choose, but I have a slightly faster way...

As long as the Ranger (sometimes located on the roof of right-most building) isn't looking straight at you, running this section is relatively simple, and the patrols won't even notice you at all. If they do, you're pretty much screwed. On the bright side it's still the beginning of the mission, so even if you manage to screw things up here, you wouldn't have lost much time in the process.
Basically you need to hug the right-hand side of the area, hop onto the catwalk, make your way around the building, and slip through the door to safety. You shouldn't need it, but in case you do, there is a health pack right near the exit door.
Head through the exit, jump up to the next platform, and go around the right side of the tower. You'll alert a few Grunts in the process, so wait until they notice you before sprinting to the far building. That way you'll miss all the stickies in the process. Run up the stair to the second floor balcony and jump off the side to head back into the cliffs. You may encounter an Ultra in the building, but usually he's paying too much attention to Jun to notice you until you're back on the ground. By then it's really too late for him to do anything about it.
The last obstacle in this section is a dynamic duo of cannon fodder; a Grunt Ultra and a Jackal Major. Don't bother engaging them. Usually you can run past them just fine without suffering too much damage, but in case you have trouble, tossing a grenade will cause them to stop shooting momentarily so they can dodge the explosive. This will buy you enough time to jump past and be on your way.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

You'll want to climb up on the rock ledge to the left before charging into the next area where you'll witness one of the coolest moments of the game; a group of Grunts getting their tiny, little methane asses handed to them by a pair of raging Rancors—erm, I'm sorry. I mean Gutas. It's the only instance in the game where you'll find two enemy factions wailing on each other, which is a shame considering how much fun it was to watch the Flood and Covenant go at each other's throats in Halo CE.
On Legendary and lower, the Gutas will usually stomp the Grunts out of existence (I wonder what a battle against Hunters would have been like?!), but on Mythic, due to the significant boost in Grunty health, the battle tends to be a bit of a coin toss. There are really two ways you can approach it. The first is to simply run through it like so...

Usually, the two sides will be too occupied with each other to even notice you. However, if you're feeling extra cautious, feel free to wait out the battle and mop up the survivors. As long as you're attacking from an elevated position, you shouldn't have trouble dealing with them no matter who survives.
After breezing through this area, you'll have a brief lull of activity as you maneuver through the rock valley and past the flock of Moa. You'll hear gun shots from up ahead, and Jun will inform you that it's likely the Covenant are attacking a group of local militia. Personally, I'm not one to intervene on other people's issues, so we're going to just skip this one too.

This is the segment of the mission where things are least likely to go wrong. All you need to do is stick close to the side as shown in the video, hop up to the road momentarily, avoid the Phantom's gunners, jump down, and disappear into the night. We'll let the UNSC bitch about it later. For now, we have more important issues to deal with.
Had you decided to stay and fight it out (which is purely up to you), you'd be contending with several waves of Covenant dropped off by Covenant dropships from all directions and angles. Even on regular Legendary, the odds of you being able to save even one civilian are pretty slim, so don't feel bad about passing this one up. The extra ammo is nice, but we have yet to even pull the trigger on the sniper rifle.
Again, you'll receive a short break. The Moas will mysteriously vanish right before your eyes as you receive a useless checkpoint before linking up with Jun in the next area.

I'll Just Leave This Here...

This time, you'll arrive to at a "big pylon" heavily guarded by a large force of sleeping Covenant. Good to see they're protecting such a high-valued device with some of their best men... Among the group are Grunt Ultras, Elite Ultras, and a cocky General. If you decided to fight this one out, you'd be greeted by three separate waves of enemies. The first to are mainly made up of Elites, Grunts, and Jackals, and the big guns finally arrives with Wave 3... a pair of ruthless Hunters, and this time there isn't a Gauss Hog around to help you circumvent the fight. Sounds a bit lopsided, right? Fortunately for us, thanks to Legendary Smile, there is a small trick that not only allows you to breeze through this battle, but also the remainder of the mission!
First, sneak up to the small bridge ahead. It'll be occupied by a group of sleeping Grunts and a single Elite Ultra on patrol. The key here is to kill the Elite without disturbing the rest of the group. Wait until he's facing away from you. Then sprint forward and tap him out (do NOT try to pull a Yoink assassination, or else you'll awaken the Grunts!). Now carefully kill the remaining Grunts on the bridge while they sleep.
When you look ahead, you should notice a forklift on the pylon side of the bridge. It's drivable, so hop in and make your way to the locked gate ahead. Despite all the noise it makes, it won't usually draw attention from the rest of the Covenant, so you shouldn't have any real issues here.
Normally, you'd be fighting out the next three waves of enemies in order to get the gate open, but the method ahead has been proven to be far easier.

Download: QuickTime (17.8 mb) | WMP9 (16.9 mb)
(Right-click, Save As)

I know it looks cheap, but it's FAR easier than fighting out the battles at both the pylon and beyond. All you need to do is pull the forklift up next to the gate and jump out into the wall. If you managed to do it correctly, the game will actually clip you through the wall and into the next area. Because you chose to do it this way, the enemy spawns won't have triggered, and now you can freely waltz to the end of the mission without any opposition whatsoever to stumble upon what appears to be the Covenant equivalent of Woodstock!

BAM! Nightfall in five minutes or less.

Now discussing:

Halo Reach Nightfall Civillians

I have beaten every campaign mission in Halo Reach on legendary except Nightfall, simply because I have saved it for last. But hear is my little problem, when I played Halo Reach on Normal I beat every mission, unlocking a mission after I beat the one before it. But once I completed the game I didn't get an achievement. I was a little confused so I looked at my achievements. Then I saw it, I had gotten an achievement for completing every mission except Nightfall. So, I simply played it again. And again, easily beat it on Normal. But I still didn't get the achievement; so I thought for a while. Then I figured it out, In my previous attempts the civilians you "Have to save" died. So I played it again and made sure one survived, and sure enough, I got the Nightfall mission complete achievement along with the campaign completed on Normal difficulty achievement. So now before attempting on legendary, I'm wondering if this is the case for everyone. And if there is way to save one of them in an easier fashion. Thanks!
