What Students Are Saying About Video Game Limits, Parental Involvement in Dating and Road Trips

current events conversation

Teenage comments in response to our recent writing prompts, and an invitation to join the ongoing conversation.

Welcome to our roundup of student comments on our recent writing prompts.

This week, we asked teenagers if there should be limits on the amount of time that young people spend playing video games; what place, if any, their parents had in their dating lives; and if they’ve ever taken a road trip.

Thank you to all those who joined the conversation this week, including teenagers from Gardner Edgerton High School in Gardner, Kan.; Silver Spring, Md.; and Union High School in Vancouver, Wash.

Please note: Student comments have been lightly edited for length, but otherwise appear as they were originally submitted.

Should There Be Limits on How Much Time Young People Spend Playing Video Games?

In light of China’s new policy that limits children and teenagers to three hours of online video games a week, we asked students if they believe game time should be regulated.

Over 600 comments poured in. Students debated how harmful video games can really be and who should be responsible for setting limits on how much young people play.Almost all of the commenters, however, agreed on one thing: while too much gaming may be an issue, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.

Fears and Concerns About Video Games Are Valid.

Some people play video games and live-stream it as a job, but there comes a point where so much is too much. If playing video games interferes with one’s sleep schedule or job/school work, then at that point you’d have to take a step back and recalibrate your time limits. Some people worry about the health issues that come with over-playing like damaged eyesight, lack of exercise, lack of vitamin D, even seizures. It makes sense why parents and Chinese government officials are concerned.

Eliza, Baldwinsville

I tend to agree with the Chinese government officials and parents being skeptical and showing their concern about the negative aspect of playing video game. One particular reason for this, is because it prevents kids from having face-to-face interaction and keep them engage in this endless cycle of social media usage (video game). In addition, things from social media such as, comments, likes, and dislikes from viewers also plays a key role in our life nowadays mainly because it can impact our decisions, self-esteem and the way we think. Overall, both Chinese government officials and parents are right to worry about the negative side effect from playing video because of the of all the social and phycological damage it can cause to people base on how much time they spend using it.

Obedson, New York

I think there should be limits to playing video games. Though not as strict, video games are highly addictive and can distract a student from their studies. This new set of rules are reasonable and allow some time for kids to play without restricting it entirely. Many of the activities beside school are also pushed aside because video games might be more entertaining or fun. With the restrictions of play time, students may be able to have more time outside. While China’s government is able to implement these laws, the US would most likely not due to its leniency on the entertainment software industry.

Madeline, Valley Stream North

Video games can be very harmful to kids’ work ethic and focus. Chinese government officials and parents are right to worry about kids playing too much video games. Video games provide little satisfaction to the player, so there is rarely a proper end. Due to this, kids can play for long periods of time, without getting much out of it …

However, when kids are stressed or anxious like many teens tend to often be, video games are a quick escape from their world, and it can be good for their mental health … Kids want to play video games, sometimes kids need video games, but it’s not always the best solution.

Josh, Union High School, Vancouver, WA

Government Limitations on Gaming Sound “Dystopian.”

The idea of allowing the government to limit how much fun you can have and when you can have it is probably one of the most dystopian things I’ve ever heard. It makes complete sense why parents are concerned and why they should be allowed to limit screen time because their primary concern is that they want to make sure their child’s grades are being kept up. That’s exactly the rule that I would put in place with my children as well…

The many problems with having the government monitor how much screen time you can have in a week is that the government is controlling a monumentally larger population— a whole country with a billion people, as opposed to a house with upwards of 4 kids usually. It isn’t hard to imagine not only the amount of people that would be averse to such a strict rule, but how severe the response would be.

Aaron, North Carolina

Since video games might have some negative effects on children such as addiction and distraction from their school work, limits should be set in place, but not on a federal level…when government limits are placed on the individual home, boundaries are overstepped. These attempts have also proven to be fruitless, as minors have found electronic means to evade government restrictions. In fact, the implementation of video game restrictions on a federal level will not decrease the amount of video games played, but increase the rate of illegal activity occurring when minors find ways to avoid government blocks.

Kira, Valley Stream North

I believe the Chinese government completely overstepped in their decision to restrict the amount of hours minors can play video games by law. Although video games can impact productivity, it isn’t up to the government to decide how to deal with it. It is a parent’s responsibility to decide what is best for their child, and this law takes away their freedom of choice. Furthermore, this sets a concerning precedent for how much control the government can have concerning children’s lives and their future. If more laws following this one’s example pass, it could infringe upon their personal freedoms even more, which is very worrying to me.

Aparna, Hoggard High School

Setting Limits Should Be Up to Parents.

While I don’t think gaming is inherently harmful, gaming addiction is real and it can be detrimental to a young person’s health. Staying up late to play games leads to kids losing a lot of sleep which affects them developmentally. It’s common for me to hear my classmates talk about how they stayed up till 4 AM playing a game only to see them pass out in class. It’s also not just their time and energy being wasted, but money as well as some games are known to use micro-transactions, or purchases of in-game items. Many games have built-in mechanics which encourage almost gambling-like behavior, and I think that can be very harmful to the habits and psyche of a young person.

Because of these effects, I think parents should be able to limit how much time and money their child spends on games. Young people often don’t know the right way to time manage, and it’s a skill that everyone needs to develop to live their lives peacefully and productively. I think a parent’s job should be to lead their child in the right direction and help them develop good habits, so if that means stopping their kid from playing games past 9:30 on a school night, I think that’s perfectly reasonable.

EO, California

I agree that video games can have negative side effects on people and especially young people, but I also believe that video games open up opportunities for meeting new friends and making connections. I myself have been playing video games for most of my life and I have witnessed both the positive effects and the negative. It is important for kids to be able to schedule their time appropriately and put things more important-like school- first, but it is also important for them to have a social life and build friendship skills.

The government should not interfere with video gaming through laws, the amount of time a kid spends online should be decided by and enforced by the parents as they have a better understanding of their child, better than the government ever will. If the government has a law that limits everyone to one hour a day, a kid who can play 7 hours of video games a day and still excel in school is basically being punished because of other kids who may play for 7 hours a day and not do well in school.

Luke, Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL

Kids Should Be Able to Manage Their Own Screen Time.

Personally, I believe that children should be able to set their own restrictions for screen time unless they have shown that they can’t handle the responsibility. Most of the time I watch TV or play video games as an escape from my own problems. Being able to pay attention to a fictional character’s problems instead of your own can be calming, as long as you can exercise self control. Letting teens manage their own time can teach them responsibility and can have a positive impact on their screen time habits once they leave the house. Personally, my parents are pretty lenient on-screen time as long as I keep track of school work and screens are not too much of a distraction.

Emma, Masterman Middle School, Philadelphia PA

I think it should be up to the kid themselves. If they chose to play video games for three hours instead of doing homework and end up getting a bad grade on the test, the only person to blame would be themselves. I feel like enforcing time limits does not motivate a kid to learn responsibility or time management and only drives them to want to play more. You learn from your mistakes and can learn responsible rewards (rewarding yourself with playing time) and when to sleep and do work from making the rules yourself. I know this can go negatively but giving kids the freedom to choose can make them learn faster than telling them how to learn.

Should Parents Weigh in on Their Kids’ Dating Lives?

In “Having Trouble Finding Your Soul Mate? Let Mom Do It for You,” Sean Malin writes about JustKibbitz, a dating app designed to allow the parents of adult children do the match-making and date-arranging and, in some cases, even pay for the dinner and movie.

We wanted to know if students could see themselves and their parents embracing such a process. Some welcomed their parents’ input on their dating lives, while others preferred firmer boundaries.

Parents Are There to Help, and They Have Experience Teens Don’t.

I would definitely like to get married in the future, if I meet someone who I truly want to spend my life with. Growing up as an Indian Muslim, whenever one of my cousins wanted to get married, my aunt or uncle would meet with the families of their potential partner to allow both to get to know each other before making it official. If my cousin didn’t have anyone in mind, they’d give them some options, as well as advice. I always figured that would be how it’d go for me, too. When you marry someone, it’s not just a bond between the two of you, but your families as well. If they can’t get along, that can cause problems down the road. While parents shouldn’t have all the power in deciding who you marry, they should be able to give you tips on finding the right person. The truth is, they usually have a lot more experience in romance than we do. Personally, I would trust my parents to find someone who’d be a good partner for me, if I didn’t want to do it myself.

Farah, Bentonville West High School

I think my parents should be fairly involved in my dating life because whenever you date someone you don’t see their negative side. Not to mention how vulnerable you are when being alone with said person. Prince Charming doesn’t exist and any guy I have an interest in dating might become a murderer. I need someone to monitor them from an outside view. I would like to think I’d be cautious in choosing a date but yet I see so many people in bad relationships…

I’m not aware of any dating rules my family might enforce; I’ve never expressed any desire to date as of yet. I’m 16 and most people let their kids date at 16 but there’s no way I’d let my parents set me up with someone. I trust their judgment, but that’s a choice I’d like to make when the time is right. I believe parental supervision in dating is not a bad thing, but it does have its limits. Privacy is a luxury you can only afford when it’s safe.

Nicole, Cary High School

Many times someone can be too in love to see plain and obvious problems right under the nose. Having an outside opinion that has your best interest in mind is something very nice that we have talked about before. My mom will have me and who I am dating come on one family trip, and after things get really serious my mom will give me an unfiltered opinion on what she thinks. Afterwards I have the opportunity to take everything into consideration. I would now have my personal experiences and my family’s experiences with this person to think about. This could either end up with an amazing relationship (which is the goal), or end up with me moving on. But if I truly love this person, then I will ultimately never care what my family says, and they will respect my opinion.

Tyler, Bentonville West High School

But They Can Be Biased or Have Old-Fashioned Ideas About Dating.

To answer the question I would say no, because when the parent basically cat-fishing for you they can be biased, and it can make you think that whoever they choose is who you want or that is the type you’re always going to want. If your mom is dating a tall man then she possibly will want a tall man for you as opposed to a short one which can be applied to race, body type, facial features etc. That biased habit of a biased parent always choosing ‘best’ for you can ultimately stop you from exploring and deciding from yourself who you truly want to be with because all you ever dealt with is the same person.

Zoë, Cary High School

I plan to get married in the future after I finish college, but I do not think I will involve my family in that decision because I view it as they will not be the ones making a lifelong commitment, I am therefore they should not have that choice. Also when you are in a relationship you see a different side of the person when it’s just the two of you so if your family doesn’t see that side and get a bad judgment then they would try and convince you to not be with them.

Kilee, Hanover-Horton High School

I do talk to my mom about my romantic life, whether I am dating or liking someone. Obviously, there are certain limits as to how much I share. However, I let her know what is going on. When I bring up my romantic life, I tell her good things that happen and I ask for advice. Nevertheless, I sometimes dislike it when my mom weighs in on my romantic life. Sometimes she brings up how I should date even though her way of dating is outdated. There should be certain boundaries put in place: she can give me advice if it is about how to handle a conflict, but she should not bring in her ideas on how to date properly.

Hilary, Silver Spring, Maryland

I believe that parents should ultimately not weigh in on their children’s dating lives. This is due to the fact that dating today is much different than it was 30 years ago when my parents were in high school taking an interest in each other. Even though parents try and give you the best advice possible, sometimes this can hurt and impact your situation more. I have found that not telling either of your parents about your dating life entirely is not good either. Informing them of the basics and where you stand in your dating life is just the right amount of information to tell them. Overall, I believe when parents become involved in their child’s dating scene, even when they have the right intention, more hurt is doing than helpful.

Alexander, Bloomfield Hills High School

Or They Might Get Too Involved.

There are some things, like a curfew for when the child needs to be home, that are reasonable to expect. But other things, like their child opening up and telling you about their dating life, that you shouldn’t expect just because you’re the parent. It’s a bad idea to try to force that out of a kid because you learn these things about the child through mutual respect for one another. If the child wants to tell you more about their dating life, they will. Forcing them to give up this information simply because you are the parent not only discourages them from having a romantic relationship at all, but discourages them from telling the parent anything to begin with, so as to give themselves a sense of privacy.

Ethan, Gardner Edgerton High School, Gardner KS

Many kids might trust their parents with their business, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, having parents interfere can cause some problems. It can lead the child to lose trust in their parents. This can cause a rift in their relationship with their parents and their romantic relationship. Overall, I think parents shouldn’t interfere for the most part because problems can arise. Nonetheless, parents should definitely provide advice if their child ever needs it.

Maylin, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School

Navigating Relationships Is Something Teens Have to Learn on Their Own.

If you don’t “allow” your kid to date when they are in at least their sophomore year of high school that can be damaging because there is almost a guarantee that they will find a way around that rule. In order to figure out how relationships like that work, you need to give space for issues and mistakes. Sometimes teenage heartbreak can be helpful and better prepare you for a more serious relationship in the future.

JI, ct

A lot of my family lives in India and it is common there for mothers to arrange marriages. A lot of the time the arranged marriages are pushed onto kids, but many times children will just fall into the process because they don’t want to actually look for a mate. The relationships end up being about family, power, even jobs, rather than about love. Finding someone takes time, energy, and ends up being disappointing, but these setbacks are what ultimately develop you into your truest self. I believe if the individuals on JustKibbitz (or rather anyone who has a dating life) learned about themselves on a deeper level, they would be able to form lasting relationships with a person they love without the input of their parents.

Have You Ever Taken a Road Trip?

Our picture prompt “Hitting The Road” evoked beloved memories of favorite road trips and plans for future ones, as well as inspired stories and poetry. Students used rich descriptive language in their comments, showing the emotional power and transformative potential of a getaway into nature.

Favorite Road Trips

As much as I can remember, one of my favorite road trips so far during my lifetime is from where I used to live in a city called Surabaya, to all the way to another city called Bandung. It was a 10 hour lengthy drive, and I was an impish 8 year old at the time. I was with my Mom, Brother, and driver. Our destination was up at the verdant mountains alongside flat dormant volcanoes where its waters were steamed up. There were endless wavy rice fields along with the coconut trees dancing in the wind as we arrived. The views were wonderful, there were a bunch of blooming flowers, indigenous plants and trees at the exquisite site. The atmosphere of the place was soothing and calm, which set the mood. This was one of the most beautiful road trips I’ve ever experienced.

Tristan, Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC

2016. The year of Pokemon Go, Stranger Things, and Harambe. And, of course, the year my family and I took a road trip to Colorado. Now the drive there was simply divine; the lush forests stretching for the eyes can see, flowing rivers rushing past, and a clear, cloudless sky for miles. But if the drive was divine, the destination was heaven. The Rocky Mountains were stunning. Traversing across them felt like we were transported into a different world. Their perilous edges and steep roads only added to the pleasure. The bison we saw were quite amazing as well. I feel if combat tanks were turned into animals, they’d be bison. I mean, they can take lightning strikes and not flinch! Aside from nature, the time I got to spend with my family was amazing. Those days were the days we had the most fun. Nowadays, school and work usually get into the way, even more so now that my sister is 3 hours away for college. But no matter the distance we are apart, it’s these very memories that keep us connected, no matter how far we are.

Ashton, Glenbard West High School

Escaping From Quarantine

Yes, I have had to trade TSA lines and airport bathrooms for gas station stops and being crammed into a tiny moving box with my parents and siblings but, having our first trip in months and months due to Covid and having no-distractions quality time with my family was worth it all. Earlier this year my family and I took a road trip down to Siesta Key, Florida for spring break. The trip was freeing and memorable because of how refreshing it was to get out of our house after being contained in it for so long.

Katie, Glenbard West High School

Adventures to Look Forward To

Since 4th grade when we met, my two best friends and I have been planning an extravagant road trip across the US the summer before college. It’s been a plan that we used to joke about in elementary and middle school, but now it’s coming together for real. It’s crazy how fast the time has gone. There are only two more summers until The Summer Before College comes along. I can’t believe how long we’ve been friends, and I’m so happy that we’re going to walk into college still being friends.

Our plan so far is to visit each of the colleges we’re going to be attending. We’re going to explore national or state parks and listen to an awesome playlist filled with our favorite songs from today and from when we met. We’ll take turns driving, and we’ll sleep in the car or cheap motels.

I am so excited for this plan to happen (but I’m not rushing it), and I hope we can recreate the feeling that the picture on this article gives me.

Lillian, Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC

I hope that when I get older that I can do more road trips, I have a pinterest board full of travels to-do’s. The one travel plan that I am most excited to do from my Pinterest Board is backpacking. I follow this woman on Instagram who does small backpacking trips over mountains going to remote waterfalls, lakes or just a fun camping ground throughout the United States and in Europe. The reason why I am most excited to do this in the future is because it looks so peaceful and the places and the things you get to see are away from the classic tourist location meaning that you get to see truly unique things.

Creative Stories and Poetry About Taking Off

My eyes were glued to the cracked pavement as I drove far away from my home as possible. I just needed to get away for long enough to clear my head of the stress and pressure of life. I drove down the road and noticed the sun glaring into my eyes, so I took a moment to allow my head to swivel around to pull down the mirror when I finally got a good look at where I had found myself.

I stared at the cliffs, towering hundreds of feet above my tiny, insignificant seeming car. Bold greenery decorated the brown spots of dirt surrounding me, a flood of a million shades of nature in my eyes. The yellow, warm sunlight danced upon the trees and flowers as they swayed in the breeze, falling upon their glimmering petals and leaves like a lace blanket. I rolled down my windows and a light, cool breeze hit my face, the comforting air drowning out my stress and fear. The mountains climbed so high they seemed to scrape the fluffy, cotton candy like clouds, seemingly meticulously placed along the brilliantly blue sky. I stared in awe at the scene around me, and became overwhelming grateful, that I had become lost.

Ava, Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC

I sit in the car, bore
Tapping my foot on the car floor
My phone lays dead
With headphones off of my head
I turn to the window and see
Miles upon miles of land waiting for me
Golden flowers dance in the sun
The trees shine like emeralds with their leaves
And I feel like a bird having fun
Flying high away from the trees.
No longer is there glass in front of my eyes
But cliffs, tall as can be
And vibrant blue skies
Like an endless sea
The fields below me have grass
Of brilliant greens
That seem to wave as I pass
And I am free
Then my phone dings
And the world I’ve seen
Becomes nothing as my phone rings
And my world becomes one of screens

Hollis, Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC

The wind pushes against me as I soar through the bulging rocks of the canyons. The bright, orange clay rocks shooting high into the sky where the sunshine is brightest.

My strong wings change angles again as the walls change direction, closer together this time. The air is thin here, but my body is accustomed to it, built for the heights of the canyons.

The walls get closer together, taunting me to go further. But I have gone this way many times, and I know what to expect. But even still, my chest tightens as I get closer to the exit.

Suddenly the walls behind me are gone, and I am greeted with a wave of fresh air. My eyes, adjusting to the light, finally begin to focus, taking in the view that I came here to see.

The ground is low beneath me, but I can see it all-the green of the shrubs, the dryness of the sand, the hills in the distance, the paths of man, and the extending great walls.

The bright sun heats up my large brown feathers and I close my eyes, for just a second, taking it all in-until my peace is interrupted by the sound of tires on a path. I look down to see the unnatural blue of a fast moving machine, music blaring. I turn sharply, moving in the opposite direction of the blue pest, back to the peace of the valley that I have come to love and treasure.

Bella, Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC

As the sun first peeks over the horizon, I pack up my tent and cooking tools to begin the last leg of my solo hiking tip. This is the third day of the trip, and I am eager to reach my destination, a legendary cliffside view I had heard about a few months prior. I slowly descended the mountain I had camped on that night, and as I entered a clearing, I was awe stricken by the view, a large rocky desert opened up before me, and further in the distance I saw the edge of the cliff where I was heading.

I continued the trek through the blistering heat at an arduous pace, but I knew it would be worth it in the end. As I neared the edge of the cliff, I was reinvigorated. Sprinting the final few yards to the edge. When I saw the view, my breath was taken right out of my chest. It was a vast valley surrounded by many craggy cliffs not unlike the one I was standing on. It was an oasis of green in a sea of tan, and in the distance, I saw a lone car travelling down the single, one way road.

Jonah Hill doesn't care if it's good or bad, he just wants people to stop talking about his body

Some of us just don't want to hear other people's opinions on our bodies, whether positive or negative, anymore. It makes sense. Nobody wants to hear something negative, and sometimes a positive comment can come off the wrong way.

For example, if someone loses weight and you say, "You look good, you've lost weight." It may seem like a compliment, but the person may think, "Oh, did I look bad before?"

Actor Jonah Hill has had to hear about his body from fans and the media for years and he's finally had enough of it. The 37-year-old posted a brief message on Instagram Wednesday that politely asks people to talk about something else for a change.

"I know you mean well but I kindly ask that you not comment on my body," Hill said in the post. "Good or bad I want to politely let you know it's not helpful and doesn't feel good. Much respect."

The post comes eight months after he proudly proclaimed he's no longer phased when the media tries to comment on his appearance. The post came after The Daily Mail shared paparazzi photos of him shirtless after taking off his wet suit.

"I don't think I ever took my shirt off in a pool until I was in my mid 30s even in front of family and friends. Probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren't exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviewers. So the idea that the media tries to play me by stalking me while surfing and printing photos like this and it can't phase me anymore is dope," he wrote.

"I'm 37 and finally love and accept myself. This isn't a 'good for me" post,'" he continued. "And it's definitely not a 'feel bad for me post.' It's for the kids who don't take their shirt off at the pool. Have fun. You're wonderful and awesome and perfect. All my love."

Hill celebrated his newfound self-acceptance and passion for surfing with a "Body Love" tattoo.

Hill's remarks mirror the views of the body neutrality movement, which has been gaining popularity recently.

It's a different way of seeing things than the body positivity movement, which aims for "equality and acceptance for all body types and sizes." Instead, the neutrality movement is about changing one's focus to accepting your body as is and recognizing its remarkable abilities and non-physical characteristics.

Very Well Mind describes it perfectly:

"Body neutrality means taking a neutral perspective towards your body, meaning that you do not have to cultivate a love for your body or feel that you have to love your body every day. You may not always love your body, but you may still live happily and appreciate everything your body can do."

Hill's fans and the media should definitely stop talking about his body for his sanity and also because there's something else we should really be focusing on, his amazing fashion game. I mean look at these amazing threads.

Hours after the shocking death Friday of British MP David Amess, and a short walk from the church where he was stabbed to death, locals honoured the veteran politician at an impromptu evening mass.

One by one, members of the 50-strong congregation at St Peter's Catholic Church in Leigh-on-Sea, in southeast England, approached the altar to share memories of a lawmaker described as "old school" and one of their own.

From a constituent who had needed help with a family member's visa application to a disabled child's father whose cause Amess had championed, they each waited patiently to make their eulogies.

In a sign of the rawness of the occasion in the modest, bare-bricked suburban church, their voices sometimes cracked with emotion.

"Remember David with that wonderful smile of welcome which he takes with him on his journey to his creator," said Jeff Woolnough, the priest who led the evening liturgy.

"He carried with him that great east London spirit... he was able to talk to anyone at their level. Not all politicians are good at that," he added, pointing during the service to a picture of Amess on a nearby lectern draped in purple and gold.

"He died doing the thing he loved -- meeting his constituents. He was old school... in that respect."

While the service steered largely clear of politics, Woolnough lauded the late lawmaker's commitment to Catholic principles like opposition to abortion, a fringe stance in Britain.

"As a committed Catholic we could always count on Sir David when there was a difficult vote going through the House of Commons," the priest said.

- 'He was genuine' -

In the streets around nearby Belfair Methodist Church where Amess was brutally attacked Friday lunchtime, residents were struggling to come to terms with the tragedy on their doorstep.

As dusk settled on the quiet residential area, locals returning home during the evening rush hour were greeted by a police cordon, traffic diverted and officers dotted around.

Claire Williams-Reese, 53, a teacher, stood looking towards the church over the blue and white police tape that fluttered in the evening breeze.

"I've lived here 19 years and there's never been anything like this. It makes me scared. It really does worry me," she told AFP.

"He was a lovely guy. And he was really involved in the community. For a politician, and there are a lot of politicians I don't like, he was genuine."

By nightfall, a small pile of flowers left by well-wishers near the scene of the killing was growing.

Local Angie, 66, brought a bouquet of red and yellow gladioli wrapped in tin foil.

She explained she had bought the flowers because she felt she needed to leave something.

"I'm just horrified," she said. "When I found out that he died I just shouted out, I was just terribly upset.

"It is close, but wherever this might have happened to that particular man, we would all be devastated."
