The shrinking world of farm equipment manufacturers will get cosier with a deal announced Tuesday that, in effect, eliminates Ford Motor Co. as a major producer.

Ford, which for months has signaled its desire to leave the business, agreed to sell 80 percent of its Ford New Holland division to Fiat Group of Italy. Fiat would merge its farm and construction equipment group,

FiatGeotech, into a new venture with $5 billion in annual sales.

While Fiat can use the Ford New Holland nameplate for 10 years, some dealers are apprehensive that Ford customers may perceive that the equipment will no longer be manufactured.

''I don`t like the idea that the Ford name could be removed in 10 years,'' said Don LaBelle, owner of Reed Randle Tractors in Libertyville.

''It`s a little scary.''

On the brighter side, LaBelle said he was happy with the possibility of handling Fiat construction equipment.

Another dealer, Stan Snell Jr. of Ryg & Stahly Implements in Ottawa, Ill., which has been selling Ford equipment since , said he would ''wait and see'' before judging the Fiat takeover. But he said he would like to see the Ford name endure.

The U.S. farm equipment industry has been consolidating for years as the number of farms declined, equipment became larger and more expensive and agriculture was hit by a depression in the mids. In one deal completed three years ago, Ford, known mostly for farm tractors, bought New Holland, which started as a machinery shop in in New Holland, Pa., and made its reputation with hay baling equipment.

While consolidating, the industry became more global, establishing plants overseas and importing components or finished products. Increasingly, companies formed joint ventures or turned to other manufacturers to make some of their products.

Ford, which began making farm tractors in , no longer produces any in this country, depending on output from factories in Canada, Belgium and England.

Fiat will pay Ford an undisclosed amount of cash, which analysts said is needed as the No. 2 automaker focuses on the increasingly competitive automotive and financial operations. Last week, Ford agreed to sell its aerospace business to Loral Corp. in a deal reportedly valued at $ billion. ''This is part of the strategy of back to the basics for Ford,'' said Mary O`Neill, analyst with Duff & Phelps Inc. ''They want more predictable and less cyclical businesses. Farm equipment certainly can be labeled cyclical.'' For Fiat, Italy`s largest industrial company, the combination makes for an excellent geographic fit in Europe, said spokesman Gualberto Ranieri.

''Fiat agricultural equipment has the No. 1 market share in Italy, France and Spain, while Ford is very strong in England and northern Europe,'' he said.

Ford New Holland has 3, dealers around the world and employs about 18, people in the U.S., Canada, Britain, Belgium and Brazil. Revenue in totaled $ billion.

As the majority shareholder in the new company, Fiat said it plans to provide comparable pay and benefit packages to Ford New Holland employees and to honor existing collective bargaining agreements.

FiatGeotech, whose sales totaled $ billion last year, operates eight plants in the farm equipment division and three in the construction machinery division and employs 13, people in Italy, Brazil, France and the U.S. The latter plant produces haying equipment in Hesston, Kan. While Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, was still alive, he made sure that his company kept ''one foot in industry and the other in the soil.'' Today, true to tradition, Ford Motor planted its foot deeper into the soil by acquiring the New Holland farm equipment operation from the Sperry Corporation.

Ford said it would pay $ million in cash for the division, and assume $ million in liabilities, a total price that analysts said was about 50 percent of the book value of the division. New Holland produces haying and harvesting equipment, including combines. The business will be joined with that of Ford Tractor, a maker of small and medium-size tractors.

''The product lines and dealer organizations of the two businesses fit together extremely well,'' said Donald E. Petersen, the chairman of Ford. New Holland does not make tractors.

A Possible Side Effect

For Sperry, analysts said one side effect of the divestiture could be to make the company a more attractive acquisition candidate. Sperry has been occasionally rumored as a possible takeover target. Indeed, there were reports this summer that Ford was considering acquiring the entire company, after losing out to the General Motors Corporation in the bidding for Hughes Aircraft.

But Ford executives said today that their interest was in New Holland all along.

Asked if selling the poorly performing division makes Sperry a more attractive prize, Michael J. Geran, who follows the company for E. F. Hutton & Company, said, ''Logic says the answer is yes.''

Henry Ford got into the farm equipment business because, as a boy growing up on a farm in this once-rural community west of Detroit, he complained about the endless drudgery of farm work, and built gadgets to ease the burden. When he became a world famous industrialist, he continued his efforts to make farmers' lives easier by manufacturing cheap, durable tractors.

Today, Ford is still the only major auto maker in this country with its own line of tractors, although Ford's annual tractor sales of about $ billion are dwarfed by its automotive sales of nearly $50 billion. The farm equipment market has been in a seemingly irreversible decline since the late 's, and Ford officials acknowledge that they have considered selling off the tractor division.

Move in the Other Direction

Instead, they now have made a a move in the other direction, broadening the division's model lineup by picking up New Holland.

Analysts reacted favorably to the transaction, despite the lackluster nature of the farm equipment business. ''There are probably some savings to be made in distribution by consolidating dealers,'' observed David Healy, at Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc. ''It's an industry that is consolidating, and I suppose the market will turn eventually.''

And Ann C. Knight of Paine Webber Inc. stated: ''Ford had to do something about that line of its business, and the low price that they paid limits their downside risk. There are some opportunities here for the credit subsidiary as well. I expect Ford will make more more money on financing and leasing farm equipment than manufacturing it.''

The advantage for Sperry, analysts said, was that it got out of a business that had nothing to do with its current concentration on electronic systems and computers. Although New Holland had made an operating profit of as much as $ million on sales of just over $1 billion in the fiscal year ending March 31, , operating earnings in the most recent year had fallen to $34 million on sales of $ million.

''The impact on Sperry is quite positive,'' said Mr. Geran of E. F. Hutton. ''You have an $ million asset that is not generating enough profit to justify the investment. This frees up cash to put into the computer business, which demands a lot of cash.''

Gerald G. Probst, Sperry's chairman, said, ''The sale of New Holland to Ford will permit Sperry to aggressively expand its electronic systems product and marketing strategy, while making New Holland a major part of a full-line farm and industrial equipment maker.'' $ Million After-Tax Loss Sperry said it would record an after-tax loss of $ million, or $ a share, on the transaction in the second quarter that ended Sept.

If Ford's agricultural roots extend well into the previous century, New Holland's are almost as deep. It was established in in the farming community of New Holland in Lancaster County, Pa., and for years made small gasoline engines to run machinery and generate electric power at isolated farms. It turned to hay balers and other specialized farm machinery in the 's, and was acquired by Sperry in

Ford executives said today they made the acquisition without any anticipation of an early improvement in sales to farmers. ''There are no signs of an immediate pickup,'' acknowledged Robert F. Moglia, the head of the tractor division. ''We are not planning for a stronger market.''

But adding New Holland's combines and other equipment will broaden Ford's product line, both here and overseas, Ford's executives said. ''This makes us a strong entry in an industry that is consolidating,'' said Philip H. Benton, executive vice president for diversified products.

Deere Is No. 1

The combined operation will have annual sales of about $2 billion, and will rank second or third in the American farm equipment market, they said. Deere & Company is the industry leader.

Farm equipment analysts have said it will probably not be until the latter part of the decade that demand begins to recover. They said the equipment purchased in the late 's was still functional, and that the problems some farmers have been having paying their debts has not encouraged bankers to extend credit for new purchases.

Morever, new farming techniques have reduced the amount the soil is tilled, lessening the need for tractors.

Nevertheless, they note that the most efficient farmers are heavily mechanized and need to replace their equipment as it ages. As Henry Ford wrote of his farm boyhood: ''My earliest recollection is that, considering the results, there was too much work on the place. Even when very young, I suspected that much might be done in a better way.''

The Ford Tractor division was the result of&#;Henry Ford’s&#;desire to replace horses on farms. The company was then renamed&#;Ford-New Holland. In , after&#;Steiger&#;sold out to&#;Case IH,&#;Ford&#;decided to make its own&#;Articulated tractors, purchasing&#;Versatile&#;to form&#;Ford-Versatile. The company then stopped expanding. In ,&#;Fiat, already one of the biggest tractor companies ever, bought Ford-New Holland,&#;and Ford-Versatile. In the years that followed, the&#;Ford&#;blue and&#;Fiat&#;terracotta were merged, and the tractors were re-named&#;New Holland. In , Fiat also bought&#;Case IH, thereby becoming the world's second largest tractor producer. After the merger, in ,&#;Versatile&#;was sold to&#;Buhler industries, and the&#;International Harvester&#;plant at&#;Doncaster was sold to&#;ARGO, which re-branded the tractors as&#;McCormick.

The beginning

Henry Ford decided that his mass production techniques&#;could be applied to tractor building to meet the needs of feeding the population using small light tractors rather than the early Prairie Heavyweight tractors designs derived from steam tractors. But the board of directors did not agree and so he set up his own operation under the Fordson brand.

The Early Years

Ford produced tractors&#;under the Fordson brand in Dearborn, Michigan,&#;USA&#;from to After that, production was moved to Cork,&#;Ireland and in the s, to Dagenham,&#;England.&#;They produced the various versions of the Major and the F & N series of light-weight designs using the Ferguson linkage system.

After , all tractors made by the company worldwide carried the Ford name. Ford stopped using the Fordson Name and switch to branding as FORD Tractors UK in Britain. Production was started in new factory in on a acre site at Basildon in Essex, to coincide with the introduction of the new range tractors.

Early Ford tractors had their own petrol and TVO engines fitted, but when the market started switching to Diesel engines in the UK ford fitted some models with Perkins engines. But when they opened the Basildon factory they had capacity to build their own and the new series was built with Fords own engines. They also sold a lot of Skid units to other OEM manufacturers in most cases fitted with a Ford engine. Due to design commonality some manufacturers fitted other models or industrial version to suit their application. Ford also had firms like County build low volume models to fill gaps in the line up and meet certain markets needs.

Ford Tractor Company was a Minneapolis-based company active from to , that built tractors to facilitate "horseless farming".

Ford Tractor Company was incorporated on March 15, by W. Baer Ewing and Paul W. Ford.[1] Prior to founding the company, Ewing worked in the insurance business. The choice of name has been assessed as deceptive by later commentators. Businessman W. Baer Ewing had hired tractor designer Robert Kinkaid to develop his product line, but named the company after one Paul Ford, a local hardware clerk Ewing had hired, allegedly to leverage the Ford name to take advantage of customer confusion with Henry Ford.[2][3] The company may have hoped for a quick settlement with Henry Ford to acquire the name, but instead Henry Ford marketed his own line of tractors, beginning in , under the brand name Fordson.[4]

On, June 19,, Paul Ford was relieved of his duties with the company but still continued to receive compensation.[1]

Nebraska Tractor Law[edit]

An unsatisfactory Ford tractor was partly responsible for the establishment of the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory. Nebraska farmer Wilmot F. Crozier's experience with the Ford and other tractors caused him to advocate for the establishment of testing requirements to verify tractor performance. In a law was passed in Nebraska mandating that tractors be tested on a standardized basis in order to be sold in the state.[5]


The company is the subject of a silent educational documentary produced in , Horseless Farming With Ford Tractors.[6]

Many years ago, the doors had opened for the industrial age where man and machine had become a powerful force for agriculture in America. The man who saw the potential for marrying machine with farm work was Henry Ford, who spent his child hood on his father’s farm in Springwells Township (Southwest Detroit).

Mr. Ford was the pioneer for mass production of automobiles. Less well known is that Ford Motor Company also claims that Ford was the first to mass produce tractors for the U.S. farm industry.

The first experimental Ford tractor was built in , and at the time, Henry Ford called it his “Automobile plow.” The first tractor came with an engine and copper water jackets and its rear wheels were taken from a binder. Ford called his first, mass-produced tractor the Fordson.

The tractor was first built for export in and and introduced to American farmers in On a historical note, The Fordson tractor had revolutionized all creative ideas of tractor design and efficiency. The mass-produced Fordson tractor created an affordable piece of valuable machinery to farmers, and made it possible for the average farmer to purchase a new and reliable tractor that many farmers thoroughly had enjoyed.

The Fordson tractor was the first lightweight, mass produced tractor on the market. The models sold for considerably less than competitive models. The name of the tractor, Fordson, was a contraction of the original name of the tractor operation, Henry Ford & Son.

 In , the British government had requested assistance from Mr. Ford to build large quantities of tractors to help raise urgently needed food to counteract the effect of an enemy blockade during World War I.

During the s, 75 percent of all tractors built in the United States were Fordsons. The tractors could also be used for hauling lumber, coal, brick and other material and sometimes even switching loaded freight cars, the removal of snow from sidewalks and many other industrial uses as well. In all the various uses, the Fordson tractor was proving to be a very profitable investment for the growing Ford Motor Co.

The Fordson did the work faster and more economically than other tractors. When it was called upon to replace horses, the Fordson tractor had demonstrated its market dominance.

About that time, Henry Ford began to develop a working relationship with the late Harry Ferguson. The Ferguson-Sherman company, which made plow and tractor parts, marketed the Model 9N for sales distribution from After the war, all production of the Ford Model 9N tractor was halted. In , the relationship between Harry Ferguson and Ford Motor Company severed.

The year marked the year anniversary which was dubbed the “Golden Jubilee” celebration. In January of that year, Ford introduced the model NAA tractor and was marketed as the Golden Jubilee model in recognition of the company’s 50th anniversary.

On May 30, , Ford Motor Company announced that commencing August 1 of that year that they would assume distribution of the Ford Tractor and many lines of farm equipment for a growing and competitive market.

In conclusion, Ford Motor Company has always had along and great history manufacturing tractors for the farm industry that will always be a part of Ford's great legacy and heritage.

Henry Ford once said, “I have walked many a weary mile behind a plow and I know all the drudgery of it.”
