Applying for graduationA MUST DO!
As a graduate student, you are responsible for applying for graduation with the Graduate College. Here are a few items to keep in mind:
- You must apply for graduation using the one of the forms listed below. (Do NOT apply through your my.utrgv.edu account.)
- If you are applying for graduation of a certificate program, please use the form listed below. If you are applying for both a graduate degree and a certificate, you must submit a graduation application for each program separately.
If you are ready to apply for graduation, follow the instructions below:
- Submit a Graduation Application to the Graduate College office or via email at [email protected] by the deadline that applies to you.

Please allow about business days for your fee to be posted.
- Meet all requirements for the degree you are seeking. Be sure that you have fulfilled all requirements specified on your official degree plan. If you chose to purse the Thesis or Dissertation option, you should consult with the Graduate Advisor for specific procedures that must be followed. In order to have the title of your thesis printed in the Commencement program, it must be approved prior to printing deadlines, which are approximately eight weeks before graduation.

Application Self Service Center
If you would like to continue or check the status of your graduate application, follow the steps below:
- Log into your Self Service Center with the username and password you created when you started the application. *Note: If you do not remember your username or password, please select "Forgot Username/Password". DO NOT create another account.
- Click the "Applications" button on the top left hand corner of the page.
- Click on "Summary" to check your status or "Continue" to continue your application.
Your Self Service Center will provide you with a status of what items have been "Received" or "Not Received". If you have recently submitted or requested for official documents to be sent to our office, please wait a few days for processing time and log back into yourSelf Service Centerto verify receipt.
If you have applied to a 4 yearundergraduate degree (Bachelors Degree), you will need to send an email to[email protected]to check your status or for additional questions.

Applying for Graduate Admission
Most programs/departments have specific deadlines for admission, scholarships, assistantships and fellowships. We recommend checking program deadlines before creating an application account.
Number of Applications
An applicant may apply to only two programs per term; any subsequent application(s) within the same term will be automatically withdrawn.

PREPARE TO BEGIN THE APPLICATION
We strongly recommend you obtain and submit supporting documents as possible before you create the application. Although it isnt necessary to have all supporting documents on-hand at the time of your application (e.g., letters of recommendation), it will help facilitate a shorter processing period.
After submission, you will still be able to upload unofficial transcripts or unofficial test scores to the application, but you will not be able to revise the actual application.
CHECK YOUR APPLICATION STATUS
After submitting your application, you may check the status of the documents received or processed (i.e., test scores, letters of recommendation), and admission decision through the self-service portal.
APPLICATION DECISION
You will be notified of your application decision by email and instructed to login to the self-service portal to view the letter.
Clery Act
The Campus Security and Fire Safety report includes information on security policies and crime data for the previous three years.
The report is available on the University Police website. You can request a hard copy of the report from the University Police Department located at FJRM Ave. Brownsville, TX or N. Sugar Road Edinburg, TX , ()

You will be required to submit the following items if you fall into the criteria listed below. Please read carefully to see if any of these items apply to you.
Texas Residency
Under Texas State Law, an applicant or enrolled student is classified as a resident of Texas, a non-resident, or a foreign student. Residency for admission and tuition purposes at a public college or university in Texas is different from residency for voting or taxing purposes.
In order to qualify as a Texas resident, an individual must reside in Texas for 12 continuous months and establish domicile in Texas the 12 month prior to census date. An applicant or student who is claimed as a dependent on a parents most recent federal tax return will be classified based on the parents qualification for residency.
A students residency classification is based on information from his/her admission application. If an applicant or student is classified as a nonresident and wishes to be reclassified as a resident, it is necessary to submit theResidency Questionnaireprior to census date of the semester in which they are seeking reclassification.
In order to establish residency for a student or applicant, two or more of the following items must be used as proof. The applicant or student will need to determine whether he/she thinks there is sufficient documentation to prove residency.Documents must cover a period of more than 1 year.

Permanent Resident Card
Students who are not United States citizens, but hold Permanent Residence Status may be required to provide a copy of the valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I) as proof of their legal status.

Meningitis Vaccination Policy
All new studentsunder the age of 22 must provide certified proof from a health practitioner that they have received a valid bacterial meningitis vaccination or booster within the last five years. Students must submit their proof of vaccination or a booster at least 10 days prior to the first day of class for the intended term of enrollment.
Students who meet one of the following four specific exceptions permitted by the law do not have to provide proof of the vaccination:
- New students who are twenty-two years of age orolder on first day of the semester
- New students who are enrolled only in on-line or distance classes
- New students who provide a medical excuse that states that the vaccination would be harmful to the students health
- New students who provide documentation of a moral or conscientious objection to the vaccine by using a form promulgated by the Texas Department of State Services. Learn more about the vaccine exemption for reasons of conscience.
*A student is considered a new student if they are enrolling for the first time at UTRGV or, if they have previously been enrolled at UTRGV and are now enrolling in a new undergraduate or graduate program at UTRGV.
Graduate students who do not meet the exceptions listed above will need to provide proof of vaccination to the Graduate College. In order to enroll, the vaccination must have been taken 10 days before the start of the semester. A registration hold will be placed on all graduate students that do not meet the exceptions. This hold will be removed once the Graduate College has received the required proof of the immunization.
Graduate students that are required to provide proof of the vaccination should submit copies of their immunization records, either in person or by postal mail, to:

Students may also email copies of their vaccination to the admissions staff. Refer to thestaff contact page to determine the admissions staff responsible for your graduate program.
