Walmart is launching its own line of aggressively-priced Overpowered gaming laptops
More and more companies are beginning to realize how lucrative the gaming market has become especially with the rise of eSports and video streaming. Samsung, for example, has essentially tied its Galaxy Note 9 marketing efforts with Fortnite to appeal to the gaming audience. Now, even Walmart has decided to step into the ring with its own brand of narrow bezel gaming laptops.
Called Overpowered, the series will launch with 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch options this November just in time for the Holiday shopping season. Specifications range from the Core i5-8300H CPU and GTX 1050 GPU up to the Core i7-8750H and GTX 1060. Thus, the systems will target mainstream-enthusiast gamers where the market is likely the largest.
After taking a closer look at these laptops, it becomes clear that Walmart has simply rebranded a barebones chassis from Tongfang. The 15.6-inch OP Laptop 15, for example, is simply a Tongfang GK5CN6Z that we reviewed a few months ago. The 17.3-inch OP Laptop 17 also appears to be of Tongfang origin.
Walmart will be able to sell these in-house branded laptops for much cheaper than the competition. The OP Laptop 15 will start at $1000 USD while the OP Laptop 15+ GTX 1060 version will start at $1400 USD. Notably, all SKUs will have a 144 Hz 1080p display as standard which is normally reserved for higher-end configurations on competing brands. For comparison's sake, the Razer Blade 15 Base Model starts at $1600 USD with the slower GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU and 60 Hz display.
It will be interesting to see how or if these price-aggressive laptops could impact the gaming laptop market. Until then, we recommend checking out the official product pages below for more specification details and our review on the OP Laptop 15 chassis.
(November 3, 2018 update: The Overpowered family of laptops and desktops is designed and configured by Esports Arena and will be sold exclusively for Walmart.com.)

What are good laptop specs?
If you work or play in the creative industry – in graphic design, video editing, photography, or digital art – there are certain specs to look for -whether you're perusing the best Walmart laptops or otherwise. You'll need the very best panels and a high colour accuracy for your screen. 1080p is the minimum resolution you should consider, but a 4K monitor is preferable.
You'll also need plenty of power because creative software such as Adobe's Creative Cloud suite can be fairly resource-intensive. As far as minimum specifications go, we recommend a dual-core, 64-bit processor (or, if your budget can stretch to it, a quad-core processor). To perform complex creative tasks, RAM should be no less than 4GB, and ideally 8GB or 16GB.
For most day-to-day tasks, you won't need to buy a Walmart laptop with a discrete graphics card but for graphics-intensive creative work, you’ll need one. An MX150 graphics card will give you some decent graphics performance without costing a fortune. For more demanding graphic work, look into Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, 1060 and 1070 graphics. If you want very powerful graphics and play a lot of games as well, then an Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card is worth considering – but it will be expensive.
Finally, for storage space, don't go any lower than 128GB because you’ll need enough to install an OS like Windows 10, and to store your files and apps.
The best Walmart laptops span a wide range of use cases, from online schooling and virtual work, to light browsing and media streaming. Plus, some of our top choices on this list are also capable of serving creatives quite well.

What to Look for in Laptops at Walmart
Operating System
A laptop’s operating system plays a big role in the user experience. If you have a preference for macOS or even certain Windows versions, this can help you hone your search. If you’re more open to a variety of options including Chromebooks, consider the level of compatibility a model offers with your favorite productivity tools and uses.
Size
Laptops are all portable, but some are more travel-ready than others. Lightweight Chromebooks and some slimmer 2-in-1s could be best if you need to tote around your device. Studier machines meant for gaming or professional use at home could be preferable if you don’t need to move around with it and want the benefit of more rugged hardware.
Hardware
For general computing, 4GB of RAM should be fine, but if you’re a big multitasker or gamer, you’ll likely want more like 8GB or 16GB as well as a speedy, high-capacity SSD versus a hard disk drive. Other important hardware considerations include the processor speed and graphics card, which impact the variety of more heavy-duty tasks like photo-editing or gaming a machine can handle and how crisp and lag-free streaming, gaming, and other media content looks.
Are Walmart's Onn Laptops worth buying?
It's that time of year again: the time when we all gather 'round to eat pumpkin pie and blow our expendable cash on the best Black Friday deals.
Walmart's no stranger to Black Friday and Cyber Monday festivities, so expect plenty of Walmart Black Friday deals, which will likely include its Onn (stylized "onn.") line of laptops.
As a core part of Walmart's brand, Onn laptops are already inexpensive. For $299, you can snag an Onn 11.6" (2-in-1) Windows Detachable Laptop, which comes with 4GB DRAM, 64GB of eMMC storage, and a detachable 1920x1080 touchscreen display. Or for just $199, there's the Onn 10.1" (2-in-1) Windows Detachable Laptop, which features similar specs but has a smaller, lower-res 800x1280 touchscreen display.
For those who want a dedicated laptop, Onn's 14" I3 Laptop is $399 and has a 128GB harddrive, 2.1 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, and an advertised 8+ hours of battery life.
None of these are refurbished prices—these are Onn's price tags for brand new devices. We expect Walmart's Black Friday holiday sales to further reduce costs.
Should you buy an Onn laptop? Yes—potentially.
Between mainstream reviews and those on Walmart's own product listings, the results are in: Onn's laptops are worth checking out if you're on a tight budget and can't wait to save up cash for a better device.
Onn's 14" I3 Laptop scored three out of five stars over at PCMag. The laptop's reviewer, Eric Grevstad, mentioned the device's Core i3 processor helps make the device "a capable choice for basic web surfing and productivity," but balanced that by saying the laptop won't impress with its lacking selection of ports, weak speakers, and tiny 128GB of storage. Even the two reviews on Walmart's site cite issues, including noisy fans, lacking RAM, and lousy speakers.
Onn's other laptops don't have any on-site reviews or many reviews across the internet at all, surprisingly. This is even the case for its most expensive laptop, the $419 Onn 2-in-1 Convertible Laptop, which features a 13.3” 1080p touchscreen, 2.1 GHz Intel Core i3, 4 GB RAM (upgradeable to 8GB) and an Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated GPU. To give you a frame of reference, those specs are good for very light gaming. Think Bejeweled, Sonic Mania, and non-intensive games like 2013's Rayman Legends.
Though Onn's laptops don't have many reviews, its other products do. This includes our sister site Laptop Mag's own review of the Onn 8-inch tablet. The tablet's biggest perk is—you guessed it—the $64 price tag, with its drawbacks being weak performance and a bad 5-hour battery life. Walmart's on-site reviews of that same tablet arrive at roughly the same verdict.
The Onn brand as a whole, across most of its products, is about compromise. If you absolutely need a functional, low-cost laptop or tablet right this very moment, Onn has you covered. However, in the event you can save up a few extra pennies to buy something better, it's probably best to do so.
Upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals
While Onn's prices are low to begin with, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals might turn the brand's laptop selection from a decent option to an absolute must-buy. Depending on how deeply discounted Onn laptops are during the holiday, the bang-for-buck ratio on the devices' middling hardware might skyrocket. At that point, we'd be inclined to remove the conditional statements from our recommendation and just flat-out say an Onn laptop is worth grabbing if you need a dirt-cheap web-surfing machine.
Keep an eye on Onn and our continually updated best Black Friday laptop deals list so you know when and where to get the absolute best prices on laptops during the upcoming holiday.
